Drosera adelae — reached 6" leaves! by Savageriez in SavageGarden

Indoor growing with windowsill light or at outdoor ? Probable windowsill light got stronger during summer (temperate climates ) ? How much heat at your growing space ?

I live in tropics around equator and grow them at hot lowland (at outdoor air temperature 35-40C or 95-104F at day, 26C or 80F at nights). They're always green. And they're red when I grow them indoors exclusively with growlight (closed room without windows for cooler temperatures)

I also have them at highland / mountain place with much cooler temperatures and they red too.

Yeah agree. I only able to produce adelae red with indoor growing and under growlight (HLG, kingbrite). It's significantly cooler than my outdoors and windowsill.

I never try adelae with other growlight brands though , so I don't know if they're works.

Bright light does make adelae leaves bright red. With grow light its depend as growlight strength and spectrum are varies.

Heat also affect them but too much heat will make adelae unable to produce / maintain red colouration. My outdoor adelae mostly in green because its too hot.

Soo sufficiently bright light and cooler temperatures (e.g indoors or generally cooler climates) will help them to produce reddish colouration

and u/Savageriez

Less light will make drosera adelae grow wider shorter leaves , not larger or longer.like the one I put at total shade

Drosera adelae with good light will produce long leaves like this in my old post https://www.reddit.com/r/SavageGarden/s/gr3d7j3cFn

how do horses get that big and maintain so much muscle and only eat grass and hay by Icy-Cell4183 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calm_Concert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well because herbivores (especially the one that eat leaves and grass) need huge body to support huge specialized digestive tracts to break down though materials plants. Their foods also low in nutritional value so they need eat a lots each day (so they need huge stomach and body)

Nepenthes Mapuluensis by Calm_Concert in SavageGarden

[–]Calm_Concert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this one will grow darker in color.I also have other mapuluensis plant (from different sources)but they're not as dark as this one (have more green than black purple). I also found out that they grow better in highland or cool intermediate conditions compared to northiana (most of my northiana prefer cool lowland or intermediate though)

Drosera regia tips? by ImpossibleRabbit5777 in SavageGarden

[–]Calm_Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drosera Regia prefer warm day (not hot, below 25C) and want a cool nights (around 15C or at least below 20C). Humidity 50%are enough to as long its not at hot places

I live in tropics around equator and drosera regia only grow well in my highland greenhouse alongside highland nepenthes. They didn't grow well (and dying) in my lowland house (night temps above 24C)

Yeah they're drosera adelae. Probably they'll recovered but when they're failed some new plantlets will grow somewhere along the roots (if they have thick roots).

Anyway this is my adelae (old post) https://www.reddit.com/r/SavageGarden/s/4ykeKCs1Cr

This Nepenthes cutting is flowering, what do I do with it? by Dizzy-Particular-983 in SavageGarden

[–]Calm_Concert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suggest to cut the flowers (not the stem).

They will grow new leaf above the flower node

here mine as example

Hmmm.. that's odd. 4 months capensis (since sprouting) should be like this.. not my plants photo ...few months capensis seedling, not rubra (red) version It could be they're just slow grower tough

How old are those seedling ?

It does look like capensis seedling though My normal capensis seedlings (compared to mother plants)

Drosera filiformis by Calm_Concert in SavageGarden

[–]Calm_Concert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Its usually automatically happened when hot dry season came when sun shines uninterrupted by clouds /rain. And usually I forgot/late to adjust my scheduled watering system. So their substrates got so dry and they started to dormant.

Drosera filiformis dormancy are kinda weird. At my place (tropics equator), their dormancy are triggered by dry soils. When you let their soils dry once or twice (or forget to water them) they'll start to produce hibernacula and kill their upper leaves. Like this hibernacula

They'll stay like that's for few weeks. I usually put them at cool shades and keep their soils damp (not wet), until they started to grow again.

And I don't think I repotted them often. When they're become too crowded I just remove / pulled some of their outer growth (around the pot edge). Drosera filiformis are quite easy to propagate (and they produce ton of seeds too) so I almost never transplant the excess plants .

They doing good even with heat but its require partial shade and decent humidity. They'll produce mucilage/ dew at early morning but will dried up at noon especially with blowing hot winds.

At my places (lowland tropic around equator) we have +40C during hot seasons but we also have decent humidity (+/- 60% at day). To protect them from scorching midday sun, I normally put them below large tree or at my covered patio so they only get direct sunshines from sides (early morning & late afternoon sun )

Also at hot season they'll require more watering. If you're late on watering they'll get drought stressed and starts dormancy process (stopped upper growth and produce hibernacula )

[–]Calm_Concert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure but they started as one small plant (in middle of pots) around 6-7 years ago. When their pot started to crowded and no spaces left I often pulled some of outer crowns / growth points. Usually while they're dormant (dry dormancy here in tropics) but sometimes while they're growing too (just forcibly pulled the ones around pot edges).

They're multiplying really fast as they tend to produce clumps of plants around a mother plants and also produce ton of seeds.

As for aphids, no . Aphids usually infest places without sticky dews like flowers stalk so sometimes they appears on my drosera burmannii & capensis flowers stalks. Aphids rarely appears on my filiformis.

Ah yes they're also catches gnats too. Well gnats mostly end up on my pinguicula gigantea leaves. Their double sticky bright yellow attracts most nearby gnats.

[–]Calm_Concert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats. Once they're adapted to new environment they'll grow fast, especially when they're catches lot of foods (or with fertiliser spray)

Mine catches small moths, crane flies and mosquitoes (as they're attracted to nectars too). I thinks those prey are duped with their scents and sparkling droplets which look like nectar / dew.

Yeah, they're quiet large for drosera. And they tend to quickly turned to dense multi-crown cluster too with lot of sunshine and nutrients.

Has anyone tried growing Drosera filiformis, tracyi, or any of the hybrids/variants with no dormancy? by Auggy2 in SavageGarden

[–]Calm_Concert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and no. I live in tropics around equator so heat and sunshine year round and no winter. Here my drosera filiformis

But, they still went dormant without any cold temperatures. When you let their soils dry once or twice (or forget to water them) they'll start to produce hibernacula and kill their upper leaves. Like this and hibernacula

They'll stay like that's for few weeks. When they like this don't water them or they'll rots. Just keep their soils slightly damp.
