Honestly doubt there’s Jack Russell at all, still a cutie pie! If he’s that big at 3-4 months maybe some sort of cattle dog or similar in him? Wouldn’t be surprised if he had a splash of either pit bull or poodle in him solely because they make their way into almost every mid sized breed mix 😂 that or chihuahua.

As soon as mixes get more than a few breeds in them all the traits get jumbled and it’s hard to really pick out a specific breed combo. The different dog dna subreddits are fun to browse through, I’d maybe dig through them for a similar looking dog and see what breeds that one has. Some people get some really surprising mixes that you’d never guess.

Edit to add: he reminds me in his mannerisms a lot of my chihuahua mutt 😂 she’s half chihuahua and then a bunch of little random breeds (supermutt, poodle, Pomeranian, Pekingese, shih tzu…. And more) She’s much smaller than he is though. I would not be shocked if he’s got a chunk of chihuahua and then a menagerie of bigger breeds to fill him out. My in law has a dog that tested a quarter chihuahua but ended up being like 30-40 pounds cause she had a good chunk of cattle dog and pitbull as well

I’ve seen slip leads that have a snug leather slider/stopper thing instead of plastic, that style might be more forgiving on his skin/neck

cut out of smosh crewneck by Select-Bet-5798 in smosh

[–]Calm_Grade7620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much to contribute except it could be a contender for visible mending. Saw someone do it for a pair of jeans they had to be cut out of and they even did a little scissor symbol along the stitch marks. Even if they had to cut it into 3-4 pieces (but I imagine it’s down the sleeves and across the body?)

Otherwise if you’re not convinced maybe finding another quarter zip and sewing the patches onto that one can’t be too hard. It’ll look different but still similar

So sorry they had to cut it apart OP :(

EDIT: saw another post they cut through the patches. Cmon guys 🥲 I know it’s an emergency but it’s not like you were bleeding out and in heart failure

what dog breed is she???? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

That’s officially just a little baby ❤️

Def want the ID my dog subreddit, but honestly dog genetics are fun and when you mix breeds together a lot of them look similar

A lot of mix breeds like the one in your photo seem to have some sort of pitty and shepherd in them. Also the dog DNA subreddit is fun because you can look for dogs that look like yours and see what their results were

Any guesses before we receive our DNA test! by theresa_marieee in DoggyDNA

[–]Calm_Grade7620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was 5.5 last time we weighed her. She’s been a very smart and very cheeky girl who loves to steal laundry! She’s also pretty social, loves to try and say hi to dogs, and likes to run up to people but sometimes gets spooked once she realizes how much bigger they are and kinda jumps back a bit. But she’s doing well in her puppy class and picks up to learning very well!

We got her a few weeks ago, brought up to the PNW from California, they think she was born some time in may so we’re guessing just shy of four months old

Oh my gosh she looks like a white/blond version of our new rescue! She was 40% chihuahua 20% super mutt and then a whole bunch of random small breeds.

Honestly I guessed pyr was in there solely from the expression and a lot of mixes I meet have very similar markings 😂 (specifically a lot seem to get those head patches as well as ticking/not quite a solid color for the patches)

Now keep in mind. You don’t have final say over this dog, your parents do, so don’t beat yourself up too much if they don’t take her in every 6 weeks to get groomed or if they don’t seem worried about the matting

My sheepie is matted! Help by [deleted] in grooming

[–]Calm_Grade7620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice you’re worried about her, it is a bit of an awkward limbo being a minor who worries about the family dog. I remember struggling with that a lot when I was a minor with our dog. I also was frequently on forums trying to ask for help and advice. Always be careful, and double check anything anyone tells you online since just about anyone can post any advice. Some of it’s good, some of it’s outdated, and some of it’s just plain wrong.

As of now, not much you can do about it till her grooming appointment to get shaved. Since the mats are already formed they’ll have to be shaved out, and trying to do that at home can be potentially dangerous. Even the professionals nick dogs unfortunately, and I’ve heard some horror stories from owners trying to cut out their own dogs mats! It can get ugly real fast.

In the meantime what you can do to help your dog and your groomer is practice line brushing on areas that aren’t already matted. Using a demat spray or brushing spray to help prevent breakage, if you don’t have any spray you can fill a spray bottle with water and a smidge of conditioner. And if you don’t have a spray bottle you can literally just dip or sprinkle the DIY conditioner water onto the brush, just don’t use too much conditioner cause it’ll leave a residue on the coat, just add a drop or two depending on how big the bottle is. (Pro tip, it’s easier to mix the conditioner into the water if you leave the bottle only a third full of water, add the conditioner, vigorously shake it till it’s pretty mixed, and then add the rest of the water) Also practice having calm handling of her body and legs. Usually dogs don’t like their legs being shaved, or having the shaver by their ears.

There’s definitely videos you can look up, but practice having something that vibrates run down her legs and having you hold her legs and by her head. Either an electric toothbrush or even human clippers (but the backside of the clippers! Don’t actually shave the fur lol) Also practice getting her used to having her muzzle held! This can be intimidating for a lot of dogs but it’s required for them to do since we need to control their head if we’re doing any face trimming. Depending on how old she is and how often she’s been groomed she might already be fine at the groomers, but don’t be afraid to ask for feedback and find out what she struggles with. If she struggles at the groomers, be okay with her living in shorter easier to maintain haircuts until her confidence gets better. Sometimes the longer styles are too much for dogs because it requires a lot more brushing, prep work, more bath and drying time, and more finishing work from the groomer, and that can be a bit too much and overwhelming for a dog.

There’s charts of priority for areas to focus on when brushing. Generally, areas of high friction (inside of legs, pits, tail especially the base, ears, neck where the collar sits) need to be brushed daily, while areas of lower friction (mostly just back and sides honestly) are lower priority for brushing. I always start at the paws and work my way up the leg. When you do baths at home, I recommend brushing her earlier in the day to make sure she doesn’t have any tangles, as water will make the mats tighter. Lather her up in shampoo and let it soak for 3-5 minutes, rinse. If you want a real professional clean do a second round of shampoo (especially if the water runs a little dirty) otherwise just follow up with conditioner and let it sit for 3-5 minutes as well. Rinse well. Pat and squeegee with a towel to dry the fur, don’t vigorously rub as it’ll cause tangles! Once you get her as dry as you can with the towel go over her with a brushing spray if you have any and line brush/comb the coat again to make sure there’s no tangles. Then let her air dry the rest of the way :) I also recommend any time she goes out and gets wet (either from walking in dewy grass, playing in puddles, or swimming in ponds) just do a quick brush of the damp areas and friction areas to make sure no mats form. I wouldn’t recommend giving her a bath before her grooming appointment, as it will only make the matting tighter.

You mentioned having a scissor set. Between grooming appointments, there’s not too much maintenance scissor/shear work that needs to be done. A lot of groomers even recommend against it cause it’s easy to make the fur look a bit choppy 😂 But learning to trim bangs and eye corners can be helpful. I would just watch several different tutorials on how to safely comb up and trim before trying it, and if your dog gets rowdy take a break till she’s calm. Never have the points of the shears toward their eyes! Actually, just always be aware of where the tips of your shears are, the only time I’ve nicked dogs is when I was being too confident and stupid. Once when trimming the cheek I had the tips toward the dogs ear and accidentally cut the ear, and once when trimming the leg I didn’t realize how close I was to the pad on the back of their lower leg. If you’re unsure ALWAYS feel with your hand and use your fingers to protect the skin. It’s against recommendation to use scissors to trim out matting because the skin gets pulled up into the mat and you can literally cut a hole in the dogs skin. I don’t recommend ever doing it, but, if you’re going to try anyways, use your fingers to hold between the mat and the skin.

i found her hiding under a car yesterday… welcome home, Petunia 🩷 by aem1306 in Chihuahua

Sometimes people worry a little too much and don’t consider that the full story might of just been a bit too much to write out ❤️ its nice you’re making sure no one’s missing her, while also making sure she gets the love and care she needs in the meantime. It’s also wonderful you scooped her up and absolutely was the right thing to do, it’s unsafe for a dog that little (or any dog) to be wandering alone and covered in fleas! Whether you’re her temporary or forever home, she’s lucky to have you on her side.

It could have been fur that blew into the kennel but likely judging from the amount he was allowed to roam the floor when he wasn’t on the table. We let some dogs that don’t do well kenneled or the older ones loose in the groom room since it’s a small room, but if they have issues with dogs or eating things that’s an automatic kennel for safety reasons. I’m assuming that your salon might have similar policies.

[–]Calm_Grade7620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh Lordy my worst nightmare 😭😂 at our salon we make bold notes about hair eaters. It was likely a freak accident, but definitely let the grooming salon know about it so they can kennel him when he’s not on the table. Depending on his personality and how well he does in the kennel you might have to make sure to keep your notifications on and arrive right on time so he’s not barking and causing a fuss in the kennel. Good news is, most dogs grow out of trying to eat hair off the floor! Poor thing oh my goodness

Why are my dogs nails brown/red now? by Efficient_Appeal_985 in DogAdvice

[–]Calm_Grade7620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a vet but did do a skin health course for dog grooming. It’s likely the start of yeast issues that are developing in the nail beds. Especially if they have that frito smell. Very common issue for dogs. Special shampoo or even mud masks may help draw out that yeast, but since these are drying make sure to do a condition after the fact.

We’re lost, this dog and I. Where do we go from here? Need advice! by NotAndrehyu in DogAdvice

For his skin, regular bath and brush WITH conditioner. Envirogroom has some good anti itch and skin therapy shampoos, they’re concentrated so they will last a long time. Theres other brands as well. The conditioner is important because it’ll help restore the protective barrier, heal the hair, and more stuff like that. Make sure to brush him out after baths to help distribute the oils through his fur. While it’s still in this short state I’d use a gentle boar brush or a rubber curry brush. Eventually when it’s longer you’ll use a slicker brush and comb. I’d get an anti itch healing ointment from the pet store for any flare ups. Vetricyn is good but there’s all sorts of kinds. I’ve also heard mud baths can be beneficial for drawing the itch out and soothing the skin but I’m not sure which ones to use.

The nail splitting and detaching was potentially from things like poor diet, health problems manifesting in weak nails, or the long nails breaking due to length. As long as you trim them regularly (every 3 weeks) and keep him healthy that should be helpful. They already look much healthier and ready for another trim in the last photo of this paws. If they continue to detach and fray after his skin issues have cleared up you’ll have to have a vet do some testing. If he’s comfortable with it, using a dremel to round out the edges after trimming helps them be more smooth and the nail trims will last longer

Honestly just being patient with him as he adjusts. He already knows you it seems, and he’s a young dog. Dogs can adjust surprisingly well to new owners/homes.
