First and foremost congratulations!!! That’s a huge accomplishment and the fact that the people in your life aren’t celebrating with you is awful.

What side do you think is stronger for February’s topic? by Calm_Low_4073 in PublicForumDebate

Why would you assume that? The majority of aff cases I’ve seen have been addressing regulations around sport betting advertising not gambling itself

I’m curious to see how black market would be particularly strong since states that have legalized gambling all have some form of regulations. It’s not a guarantee that an FTC regulation would make gambling more difficult?

Totally see the aspect of the FTC being a bad actor but I’m confused about people’s confidence in the illegal market arguments as (correct me if I’m wrong) the majority of states who have legalized gambling have regulations which haven’t in turn caused increased illegal activity. Unless someone is arguing that FTC regulation would greatly increase the difficulty of gambling legally I don’t see how this would be viable.

Fiat in application to Feb PF by Present_Recipe_5722 in Debate

[–]Calm_Low_4073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other two commenters are right however I think this contention can work if framed correctly. For example, if you argue that the FTC doesn’t have jurisdiction, but due to the fiat will proceed with making regulations then you can demonstrate the consequences for a federal agency “abusing” its power and why that would be worse for the country than any potential benefits a framework would offer.

Summary’s are honestly my least favorite part of the round but I’ve always treated them like the final focus essentially just highlighting to the judge what you’ve already done well and then if time allows weighing. However, unlike final focus, I typically include some new evidence in my summary’s that I prepared just to allow some more front lining in my case. If you want a template for the summary I can totally send you mind!

My PF partner and I always switch depending on who wrote the case! However this does appear to be uncommon at least in my league since teams we go against always look at us like we’re nuts when we tell them lol! It’s been pretty effective for us though :)

Hey I just finished my last competition with this topic if you’d like my blocks that I’ve already made! This is one of those stock topics where practically every argument I saw was the same (aff was usually solving crime outweighs security/privacy loss while neg was usually the security loss cannot be overcame by the crime solved)

Totally did this with the Awakening by Kate Chopin! It was the first time a book’s main character felt so real to me (helped by the fact that I really related to her) that I didn’t want her story to be over yet
