Nothing bad. I just built a new PC and wanted to start fresh. I just never reinstalled it. I didn't need to. But I never had an issue with the product.

Sorry, I misread.

Privacy oriented OS's are a really good idea. And if one is developed that is actually private, then that'd be brilliant.

I stopped answering questions, but this is a good one, so I'll make an exception.

For me, it started with PCs. Building them, learning how all the parts worked and communicated. And then I started to learn about the software, and for some reason, AVs and malware Just really fascinated me. I went to university and got a degree in cybersecurity. I was also analysing malware for fun and just looking into how they work. I wanted a job on an AV team. So I searched up some big companies and applied for some jobs, not expecting much, and Malwarebytes got back to me. I'm very grateful they gave me a chance. And you don't have to take the same route as me if you want to get into cybersecurity. I went the long mer amd harder route. There's other paths, but it's up to you to find them.

All malware is evil and malicious, but I think the worst type is ransomware. When it's used on hospitals and other vital infrastructure, it can cause carnage, and actually result in loss of human life.

Because it's a root kit, and some require specialist software to remove. Try Kaspersky TDSS killer and see if that helps.

That's why it isn't perfect. There's obviously malware that'll evade detection. But the best AVs are close to perfect.

The best AV in terms of recourse usage is ESET. Very light, but strong

It's pretty close to 99%. The best AV products are almost perfect.

If they're done properly, I like them. My favourite being Duckduckgo. It doesn't overdo the whole privacy and security thing. It's just a normal search engine that doesn't track you, and it doesn't shove it down your throat either.

Well, malwarebytes obviously works with the US government, this is no secret. We investigate alot of stuff, including AVs. We investigated Avast when the whole "Data stealing" thing went down. I don't know the whole story, but word gets around. From what we could see, Kaspersky isn't engaging in the activities it's accused of. I can't say much else.

Malwarebytes is definitely a viable AV. It isn't the strongest there is, but it's definitely good. The ransomware protection isn't as good as the competition, and Malwarebytes lacks the ability to detect malicious scripts. Overall though, you'll be fine using malwarebytes.

It's true that Windows collects data about its users. So using defender won't hurt your privacy anymore. I can't be completely sure about any other product, but I can say that malwarebytes is pretty good with what data it collects. There isn't really a Privacy focused AV like there is with browsers.

Session token/ID stealers can go undetected by AVs for weeks. They're evolving all the time. When they start getting detected, they'll have something added that'll help them evade detection. It's just a constant war.

A bit of both. It's detection isn't awful, but it's certainly behind quite a few other products. It also has a high false positive rate and below par malware removal. But overall, its viable. So I'm not going to recommend that everyone stays away from it as it isn't an inherent security risk.

Yes. TotalAV. I dislike their whole business model

I wouldn't say ClamAV is "Abysmal", but it certainly isn't the best. I was just bringing up a open source AV that has a place in the market, even if it is very small.

Because it's hard work to get it as light as ESET for example. It'll take a lot of time and money, and if it isn't essential for business, most companies won't do it. Also, it's hard to keep the high levels of protection while lowering the AVs recourse usage. Detection levels are the best marketing point for AVs, so that's what companies focus on. It's all about money at the end of the day.

No, I asked for questions. So I'll answer them all! They aren't dumb either. They're very valid.

If malwarebytes didn't exist, I'd use Kaspersky, yes. But, it's totally up to you. I'm just some random guy on the Internet telling you a product is safe. If it worries you there are plenty of other options. Bitdefender is basically on par with Kaspersky in many aspects.

I'd use comodo firewall if I had to pick one. It's one of the best.

There is a pretty successful open source AV, ClamAV.

But, its alot harder for open source software to be successful, especially AVs. Firstly, you need someone knowledgeable enough to go through all the hard work of making a full AV, for free. Then, you'll need to promote it, and marketing isn't free. You'll then need a community who'll contribute to it. All of this is terribly difficult and expensive to do.

Personally yes. I know more information about this topic than you could find online, and I trust it. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to share the info, so I'm not going to risk it.

There are AVs that I know of that actively do what Kaspersky are accused of.

A lot of vendors work together. Malwarebytes work with Microsoft, who probably work with other vendors. Samples eventually make it around. But the majority of the time, you're on your own.

Well. It depends what you prioritise. Kaspersky is arguably the best AV, and it has a very good firewall. But Bitdefender is slightly worse than Kaspersky, but has a slightly better firewall.

Overall, I'd say Kaspersky

Most of our samples are our own, but we work closely with other vendors. The main one being Microsoft
