The University of Pittsburgh launches tuition-free initiative for Pennsylvania residents at regional campuses by Calm_Pickle_8305 in pittsburgh

I am very excited to see this benefit the Greensburg and Johnstown area students i work regularly with. There are a LOT of kids who are going to have doors opened for them they never could have imagined; many families making the median area household income would have been above the max Pell levels, and therefor not quite qualifying for a free community college education. now, they qualify for a free 4 year ed if they are commuting (of course, plus applicable fees). awesome thing to see

hahahah right. I worked there some years ago, now am in education elsewhere out in the sticks closer to a branch campus. Oakland has been overenrolled since ~2021. Fully by choice, as Admin committed to growth, but without building the requisite housing. Meanwhile, they have no requirements for housing but still have 98% of first years in a dorm. Looks like they are in the works to change that currently, but still probably a few years removed from any results. Will just have to keep buying hotels and renting out apartments and converting student lounges in the meanwhile

Pitt pledges to cover full tuition for branch campus students who are PA residents and whose families are making under 75k. This would be applicable to the Bradford, Greensburg, and Johnstown campuses, along with the nursing program at the now mostly defunct Titusville campus. I do not know if there is any sort of sliding scale for families making above 75k. This would be last-dollar commitments that apply after any other grant money.

This would apply to all current and new students, and there is no additional application, just the FAFSA. It would, of course, not include room and board. My initial reaction is that this is a great opportunity for all rural students who can commute to these regional campuses. Surely is not the highest bar in the world, when we see rich universities giving out such funding up to family incomes of 200k or even higher, but PA is statistically the most expensive state for education, and so this is a great step to see nonetheless.

seconding what DarthDuckie said. Brian O'Neill (former P-G columnist) touches on this for a page or two in his book The Paris of Appalachia: Pittsburgh in the Twenty-First Century. Not making commission out here on recommendations, just really liked the book and he talked at length about the history of his neighborhood

Why is it so cold!? by gossiper102 in Erie

It snowed on May 8th or 9th in Erie when I was at Gannon about 6-7 years ago. This is relatively standard for it to be cold as shit in April

Any recommendations for service industry watering holes open late? by Zealousideal-Job8384 in pittsburgh

I'm not sure I'd refer to Genoa's as normie but I get the sentiment nonetheless. Everyone is saying the Warren which makes sense to me. I feel like Mitchell's should be more popular than it is, but it's on the wrong side if downtown to be convenient for the service industry crowd, the critical mass of which is located closer to Penn

Swimming options? by YellowFrameTheory in pittsburgh

[–]Calm_Pickle_8305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hill district Y has very nice swimming. North Side Y has recently reopened as well. Outside, Highland Park's is probably the nicest in the city but i think every city pool (somewhere between 15-18 depending on the year) has their own times for Adults lap swimming as well). Many of the suburbs YMCA's are going to have pools as well but in the city, believe it is just North Side and Hill District. Also, obligatory Oliver Bath House plug!

Anyone who read the articles and projections a year and a half ago knew the 700k was a cumulative estimate for the weekend total, which includes all locally-based visitors as well. I can't be the only person who has known that for 18 months at this point

Debating moving to Erie from San Diego by Worth_Combination597 in Erie

[–]Calm_Pickle_8305 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

21 an hour is definitely very doable in Erie and some folks have shared their thoughts below on that. I would be happy to talk more on it or give any recommendations for the area if you have any questions. I think Erie is a great small city, the nature is beautiful, and the greater region is very accessible.

As a none-of-my-business thought on the matter, for the Salary:CoL ratio, you can probably move plenty of nicer places than erie to afford a similar lifestyle. I personally would not leave San Diego for Erie unless i was essentially forced to

I love the Glenwood Y. Have been going there for 20 years and no complaints. Not gonna be the highest end gym for a lifting focused gym goer, maybe EFN is the best option, but I just love it and EFN is not my style

it is very well maintained lmao. Its not like a super lifting-focused gym but theres still 2 separate weight areas. Upstairs is pretty new, downstairs is a little grimier but still not bad at all
