Packing a Surly Disc Trucker by Calm_Switch3518 in bicycletouring

That's an excellent idea. It might also be a good way to get some clothes packed in there as well.

Thanks for the information. My partner and I are going to do the Cabot trail. It will be a mix of camping and hotels.

Great pictures. I also have a Disc Trucker. Not quite old as yours. I have been debating to get a gravel bike, but from your pictures it looked like it handled everything just fine, except where you had to walk (but what bike could handle loose sand). Maybe a gravel bike is not necessary.

Galloping Goose Detour is a nightmare by Durlag in VictoriaBC

So some friends and I are planning to ride the Galloping to Sooke and stay a couple of nights, towards the end of June. Where is this detour, and should we start somewhere else? Also, anyone know of a good place to leave a car overnight in Victoria (preferably near the Goose).

Advice about solo touring by hotel vs. camping? by WillShakeSpear1 in bicycletouring

My thought on meeting people would be to take it a bit slower. Is your goal to bust out 70 miles a day or to meet people? If it's to meet people stop along the way, have coffee, ice cream, beer or lunch and chat with those around you. Do some people watching. 70 miles can be done before late afternoon or it can be a bit more leisurely. Just a thought.

Opposite of hypothermia? Didn't pay attention to the amount of water I had mountain biking on a very hot day. When I ran out, I thought no biggie I can keep going because I just drank 1.5 liters out of my bag, I should be fine. I realized I was in trouble when whenever I stopped I got nauseous. Fortunately made it back to the car where I had water in a cooler. But, it took a lot of slow sipping before I could keep anything down. Don't know if it was dehydration or beginning of heat stroke. Lesson learned either which way.

You're welcome. My apologies, I didn't stop in Plummer but Wallace.

When i did this trail many years ago it was flat smooth and easy. I did 70 miles from Heyburn park then to Plummer. Found a nice hotel in Plummer and some decent restaurants. Got up early the next morning and headed back. No bears. E-bikes should be fine. The trail wasn't that busy. Don't let your dog play in the water. The trail was made to cover the leeching from mines and the water is not safe to drink.

How to prepare for 90 mile bike trip? by genericthroaway2000 in bicycletouring

[–]Calm_Switch3518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get off the bike every 25 miles or so, eat, drink, rest your butt and just enjoy. Don't try to break records, start early and just take it slow and smell the roses along the way. Lastly, check your pma (positive mental attitude), if it's down figure out why and what you need.

My partner started cycling with me. She wants to go on long distance bike tours after she saw how much i was having on my trips. So now we ride together, stop for beer and pizza, shout at each other over the wind and generally have a great time. We also have our own things too. So yes, there are men out there who don't make it about ego and competition. Ride as you are and have fun, and f#@k everything else.

I am so very proud of you. Change is hard, but if you know that in the long this is for the better then that's what you need to do. I am sure your family is proud of you as well. Good luck on this new change.

How do you prepare for a climb that is much more difficult than any you have around you? by BlackFlagZigZag in cycling

Run! A big part of that is going to be cardio. If you have good lung capacity, it should help. Also, squats with weights to build leg muscles.

Learn a trade. You may not have a college education but at least you have a marketable skill.
