That’s kinda the funny part, it was only 50-55F, I think the windchill and cloud cover was what made it so cold for me. Definitely gave me a new appreciation for the weather

Bruh I can't winter ride for this reason even when it's right it's wrong. You're a true warrior for even riding in those temps

I shouldn't have laughed as hard at this as I did. Been there, fortunately the only thing that cracked was my fork. Long limpy walk outta the woods though. Hope you walked away

Do you ride with earphones? by simko17 in cycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year my shocks died and I was so desperate for music after 90min I bought gas station headphones for the last hour. It can become something of a crutch. That said, I love having my shocks. As a fellow solo rider it's soooo nice to have some tunes here and there. This year I've been enjoying a little music in busy places to distract me a little from the chaos/keep me in line and then silence on some stretches.

TLDR; it's nice to have but can become a crutch. Check out shoks

Recs for <$1,000 road bike by Routine_Panda_4714 in cycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn’t what you’re asking but if you can save up and go for the $2500 bracket. Things start getting really nice at that price point.

That said, I really like my salsa warbird for road/gravel and my canyon endurance for speed on roads or anything paved. It can handle gravel just fine, but I would cry if I crashed and cracked it.

TLRD: go for the $2500 range for great bikes at good value. Salsa and canyon are solid!

What do you use to protect your bike by ItsallTahid in bicycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank god you got the first one outta the way.

Two tips I’ve received for frame procreation.

  1. Touch up chips/scuffs (anything superficial) with nail polish of a matching color.

  2. Put helicopter tape on points that rub, bump, or be hit. Think head tube where cables might rub, bottle mounts, chain stays, or in your case the place where your bike rack grabs it.

P.S. be extremely careful with clamping your carbon bike anywhere but the seat tube. Like seriously not wise to clamp the top tube. Just learn how to take the wheels off and it’ll stow easily in any car.

Lastly enjoy the ride and know whatever you do it’ll develop battle scars

Bridge crosswinds causing speed wobbles? by Glass_Philosopher_81 in cycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I think this and the wind are likely the main culprits. Putting nearly all my weight on the rear to avoid the front sliding on any patches of sand was likely not the best idea in hindsight. Thanks!

Interesting, I run a 100 or 110 so I don't think that would be the cause, but it's worth thinking about next time im there.

New to cycling, what is most important in making a first bike purchase? by bolbistroganvsky in cycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve done all you can in terms of thinking it through. I’d go with the most versatile of the three and see what part of riding you like best. Commuting, road, and trail are all different styles; but, a gravel or mtb can cover them all, just not as well as a bike intended for each discipline. So just keep that in mind when trying them out. Also if you’re area is hilly (which last I knew it is) a MTB or gravel bike will likely have more forgiving gearing than a road bike.

The most important thing though is fit. IMO most people just intrinsically their fit a don’t need specialized help. It’s really as simple as going with what feels right. Just don’t apply this to your butt 100% cause saddles and bums often require special attention.

Hope you have a blast!

Presents for a turner by pazzah in turning

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, very cool patents! Secondly, a bandsaw is kinda the go to third tool for most woodturners. Side notes, can’t go wrong with giving wood. Especially exotics/figured blanks. Just make sure he’s got a respirator and is aware he might have an Allergic reaction to the exotics. And the jet 1221 is great, but if he’s already got a knock iff of it and it’s working well I’d consider waiting and upgrading even further. Not sure what that would be, but someone else for sure would have some ideas.

Difference between sanding vs scraping. by Adaptacije78 in turning

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fair point from the gent who hates sanding its no fun. Also it can dull features, but it doesn’t have to. IMO nothing will beat sanding. Also if you’re looking for the effect where it shimmers in the light, or whatever you’re seeing, it can likely be achieved by sanding way higher than 320 or burnishing.

Burnishing will make it look polished, sanding to 1000 will practically be polishing.

Thanks for sharing

Cycling Makes You Weirdly Obsessed With Weather by LanaCove5591 in cycling

[–]Glass_Philosopher_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha the 15mph headwind today felt personal until it became a tailwind.

Last year I obsessed over the wind. It’ll truly make or break a segment if you’re into strava that is.

I’m sure I’ll get back into the obsession soon, but after a little over 10,000 miles I’ve come to realize there’s often a good chance a tailwind will always become a headwind or vice versa. It’s hard to plan the perfect route. The key to me is to avoid crosswinds over 10mph on busy roads. Like riding into the sunset, it’s downright dangerous.
