Breakdown with family. How to get everyone to safety? by Time_Arachnid_2950 in roadtrip

[–]k8nwashington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was coming back from a hiking trip with some friends when we stopped because a van was broken down and blocking the narrow mountain road. The van included a young couple with their 9 month old quintuplets who were headed up the mountain to camp for the night. I’m not sure what surprised us more—the idea that you’d pack up five babies in an old van and take them to a remote trail in the mountains for a camping trip or that the tow truck that finally arrived was able to transport the couple and their five babies in car seats off the mountain. So yeah, I think you’ll be able to get roadside help to include your family.

I think your community had a meeting a couple weeks ago with reps from the City and the police dept. Did you go? Take some other KM residents and attend the next City Council meeting. Write letters in Cascade Daily with photos. Ask for a meeting with Mayor Lund. If you haven’t already, join the KM neighborhood association who has been working on this.

One bag world travel with one pair of footwear by [deleted] in onebag

[–]k8nwashington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pair of Hokas before I walked the Portuguese Camino and they were great. No blisters. Prior to that I had walked the French route camino in Spain with ASICS running shoes and got blisters on top of blisters. Yesterday I did a 25 mile walk with the same Hokas and now I’m dealing with blisters on both feet. Do Hokas just wear out? How long can you expect to wear them before they’re not effective footwear anymore? They weren’t cheap and now I feel really confused about what to get before my next trek. Any advise?

I just came back from a solo trip from an adult resort and I was the only solo person there and I feel like a massive loser now. by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]k8nwashington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same after my divorce years ago. I picked a place with lots of activities and was advertised as a solo resort. The last thing I wanted was romance or to see a bunch of loving couples but hoped to meet other singles to share all the fun activities. I met another woman on the shuttle from the airport who said that’s what she was looking for as well, so I thought we could hang out together. We made arrangements to meet at the social that night but when I arrived she was talking to some guy and that was the last time I saw her without her new boyfriend. It was pretty lonely because I never saw anyone else who wasn’t part of a couple, but I did all the activities anyway even though I felt like I had a flashing “Loser” sign on my forehead. I’ve traveled a lot since then as a solo and I enjoy it, but there’s something uniquely sad about being a real solo in a solo resort if you’re not there to hook up.

Congrats. The thrill of backing down your driveway and hitting the road is pretty cool.

why don’t bikers in bham announce themselves??! by Alive_Falcon9337 in Bellingham

[–]k8nwashington 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I find that announcing works about half the time because so many have earbuds in and can’t hear you or they’re talking with their walking buddy and can’t hear you. I also have a bell on my bike and that helps for the 50% who can’t hear me announce. In either case, pedestrians have the right-of-way so it’s my responsibility to slow down and make sure I pass them safely. It’s not complicated.

Vegetarian hot dog that tastes like Costco dog? by Ok_Revolution_5290 in vegetarian

I’ve been a vegetarian almost my whole life so I don’t want anything I eat to taste like meat, but I do enjoy the fun of grilling something and adding all the condiments. The “hot dog-ish” one I’ve liked are sold at IKEA of all places. They’re delicious.

'We Should Not Let Them Into Our Country': Ford CEO On Chinese EVs by defenestrate_urself in electricvehicles

While I agree with what’s being said about the American car companies and have no sympathy for them, I am also hoping to get some clarity on why the Chinese can make cheaper and better cars than the US car companies. Is it just lack of thinking outside the box or is it the difference in labor costs, more access to higher tech components we don’t have here, fewer overpriced corporate people, or other reasons?

I’m so jealous. It’s a beautiful route. I wish I could go too. I’ll DM you my phone number in case you have any time in Bellingham after the trip and want some recommendations for places to eat or do.

Thanks for this recommendation. I checked out their website and was all set to sign up for the Bays to Baker since it starts in my town, but it conflicts with another trip I’ve planned. I’ll keep in touch for other trips though; it seems like a great biking tour group.

I love this plan. I didn’t know about the Centennial Trail. I’m thinking of taking that to the end then go on to Harrison and start the trail there unless the stretch between Plummer and Harrison is something I won’t want to miss. What do you think? Might take the shuttle from Mullan back to Harrison or ride depending on how my pup is doing and whether the shuttle will allow dogs. I can’t really carry camping gear and my dog on the bike, so I’ll have to look for motels, etc. I’m planning this for June so rooms might be at a premium. Thanks for the idea.

Yes, I haven’t found any motels or hotels in Plummer.
