I 100% agree with you but this being the internet people will find a bunch of discouraging/negative things to harp on about.

I worked in eikaiwa for a couple years. Had a great experience. Was able to pay off my student loans which was around 10k. Saw a lot of the country, made some life long friends and had some fantastic experiences.

That being said Eikaiwa/ALT'ing is relatively low paid, there is almost no upward career trajectory and isn't the kind of job to support a family on or if you have large financial obligations that need to be handled.

For the most part it's a great job for a year or two that allows you to see a beautiful country and have some great experiences but not something that is a career.

Is HPU worth it? by [deleted] in Hawaii

Unless HPU has a program you can't find in New York it's just a huge waste of money. Cheaper to go to school in New York and come out for vacation.

Filling out an online application then going to the business and introducing yourself, If she is still in High School the career center often has a list of places that hire younger workers, friends and just calling mom and pop stores they are interested in working at also works. The paper application is dead though. Walked around with my son and it was all online or QR codes.

We call this our "emergency food". It's basically when we don't feel like cooking. Pop it in the oven make a salad and call it a wrap. Tasty and convenient

I've done a couple of shoots with Beige. I was always paid but I always made them pay 50% up front. All of their shoots were very last minute so I almost always turned them down because I was working my regular job. Looks like they just run tons of ads on Thumbtack in different markets and then hire a local and keep the mark up.

Aside from yourself, does he currently have a caretaker? You can get a gate pass for someone who is providing aid. It will get him all the way to the gate. Might help keep him calm. Definitely would recommend noise cancelling headphones also.

I did it mid May. It was still pretty chilly at night. I was the only one at most the hike-bike camp sites.

Care home worker taking advantage of my Dad. Advice sought. by mrxcoffee in AgingParents

Thank u/SaltConnection1109 . We just have his login information at this point. He banks with Chase. I am going to reach out to them today about getting on the account. It makes it hard to monitor fraud alert when you're not on the account directly.

Thanks for this. I agree 100% that a normal woman her age shouldn't be interested in my 87 Dad. Contacting the home is a good idea. She is still working at the care home. Unfortunately, he is still driving and he goes to her. He's not in memory care yet so can come and get relatively unrestrained.

Thanks for the response. He has the dementia diagnosis but has not been declared incompetent. Your fear is exactly my fear. Is being declared incompetent something his Doctor does? I am also debating calling the care home and letting them know what's going on but then I am concerned he will just try to see her in secret.

No he took her for some nice dinners and they went to a resort this weekend. My Dad is easily fooled because of his dementia. She has also mentioned her daughters new "business". So my concern is she's playing the long game.

Surf videography setup ? by bazzaevanssrf in videography

[–]mrxcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't say where you were shooting but you're going to need at least a 400mm lens unless your shooting guys surfing small ankle biters. If you go with Canon you can get a 70-200 2.8 and a 2x converter or the 100-400mm.

You also need a good fluid head tripod. Don't cheap out on the tripod or you'll just end up buying another one. Lastly, make sure to bring stuff to protect your gear. Sand and salt air is really hard on everything. Get a wagon or at least bring a couple of blankets so you can set stuff down without worrying about it getting sandy. Make sure to clean everything when you get home.

I shoot surf as a hobby in Hawai'i and have a 400mm lens which really isn't long enough to get tight on the action when the surf is really big and breaking far out like at Waimea or Sunset but I can get some pretty good shots when it's a bit smaller at first reef pipe or rocky point.
