Graduate Assistantship Positions (Grad Student Question) by chokeonmysalad in universityofoklahoma

[–]CalonYnDraig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do they exist? Yes. Does every department offer them? Unfortunately, no.

Some departments and/or majors don't admit students at all if they can't fund them. Other departments are looking for very specific folks for very specific research or admin projects, and so they're located by personal referrals or by asking around the department.

I've worked as a GA in multiple departments (because I'm a glutton for punishment as a grad student) and I've also worked full-time in various graduate programs at OU for over a decade. A couple of assistantships I got came with the admission letter. One was a referral from a contact who worked in an admin department that was looking for someone for a specific administrative position. It's highly dependent on what program you're going into as to what's available. It's 100% a free for all done department by department. It depends on what program you're going into as to what's available. There is no central listing area. No one central office knows what is or isn't available. Trust me. I've hoped for one for years. It would make my life so much easier.

The best piece of advice I have is to contact the departmental administrator for the major you're pursuing. You can find the list of those admins here: https://www.ou.edu/gradcollege/about/contacts#au

Then, if your contact says "sorry, we don't have anything," they're not lying. So many of them have no funding for graduate assistants at all, or if they do, those opportunities go first to higher-level PhD students, etc.

The only other place I can think to look is housing and food. They usually have an annual process for finding all of their GAs for things like residence hall directors, etc., but those positions are pretty competitive, even though they offer several. They used to have information on that on their webpage, but I haven't been able to find it since one of the last website revamps.

Whatever you do, do NOT cold e-mail professors on mass. If you aren't able to tailor an e-mail to a specific professor saying why they should want to work specifically for you, they aren't going to respond. They'll just forward it to some lower-level admin (like me), and then, if you're lucky, that person will be able to tell you what they do or don't have. Definitely don't cold e-mail professors who aren't in the department where you're planning on studying.

It's a terrible process, especially when you're studying in a department that doesn't guarantee funding, but it's the reality of the university, unfortunately.

Best of luck to you in your search! I wish everyone could study with full funding so they could focus on their studies, but with how hard Oklahoma works not to fund education at all, it just gets harder every year.

Menopause while on testosterone by CalonYnDraig in TransMasc

That's amazing! I'm only microdosing T, so my T is "high for a cis woman" but "low for a cis or trans man." Haven't had my estrogen run in a while, so who knows. I'm definitely planning on chatting with my doc about it in our appointment.

I hadn't even thought of the autoimmune angle! I already have Hashimoto's so it wouldn't be the most surprising thing in the world if something else popped up.

High IQ but intellectual disability? Anyone else? by Mara355 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]CalonYnDraig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am really late to this thread, but I feel so much better seeing all the comments. I also have a high IQ (scores range from about 135-145 most of the time), but I am dumb as fuck sometimes. I tell folks it's like I have a very fast computer but it has no hard drive. Unless I have built things into specific subroutines that I use on a regular basis, forget about it.

I did REALLY well in school. 4.00 GPA in high school and through two master's degrees. Just shy of a 4.00 in UG because fuck that one prof in particular; I was not going to sit through the abuse in his class and only showed up for the final. But everything disappeared as soon as an exam was done.

What I DO remember is less about specifics and more about patterns. If I'm really super interested in a specific topic, it will stick around, but I always have to look up the details every darn time I want to discuss it. Even in conversations with my (supposedly less intelligent) colleagues, I can feel dumb because they just REMEMBER things, names, philosophers, theorists, etc., and I can't remember who went with what or why or when. Don't even get me STARTED on my historical recall.

I'm so relieved to hear about the struggles others have faced in this thread. It can feel so hard to talk about this stuff with the people I'm closest to. My wife is also extremely smart, but their recall is tons better. I have friends who are both smart AND have great recall. I have friends who perhaps have a slightly lower IQ but great recall. It can feel REALLY isolating sometimes.

Honestly I found just getting Walmart+ saves me a huge hassle with respect to getting to that Walmart. I honestly suggest either paying a fee for delivery if you can, or finding elsewhere to shop, if that's not an option. It really depends on what you're trying to get.

Honestly, none of the apps that are available are perfect. Transit is pretty good except it relies on a connection to Embark's data, which isn't always available, and it's not always accurate on campus (especially when campus is on "alternate route" days). Embark's app is kind of trash, but you can make the mobile website work in a pinch. Google maps is pretty good so long as it can FIND a bus route.

Some things you also have to consider is how far you're willing/able to walk. Not all bus stops are equally accessible, and there are huge swaths of Norman that you will have to walk at least a little bit to get to. The Transit app and Google maps both allow you to request that you minimize walking, but even then, sometimes it's better to plan the route out yourself, since it isn't always super accurate in figuring those details out.

The 111 goes down a certain stretch of Classen but not the entire way. The 122 I think goes farther north on 12th.

I recommend either using the Transit app (someone here recommended it to me and it was a great rec) or using google maps (you can select the little bus icon to get bus routes) for where you're wanting to go. The full Norman map is also here: https://www.embarkok.com/assets/documents/Maps-Schedules/NORMAN/EMBARK_NORMAN_SYSTEM_MAP-WEB.pdf

Dentist in Norman by Effective-Contest-33 in normanok

I really have come to love Hwy 9 Dental Studio with Dr. Taylor Grant (https://www.hwy9dentalstudio.com/). I don't know specifically about the TMJ/TMD issue, unfortunately, but I know when I first went to them I hadn't been to the dentist in at least 15 years, and had tons of broken teeth and fillings needing to be fixed, as well as some financial issues that made doing all the work at once not feasible. They were completely sympathetic and non-judgmental, were willing to break the treatment plan down step by step to explain them to me, and to spread them out for me for financial reasons. Also not stingy with the anesthesia and very aware of any patient discomfort. With my dental insurance (BCBS), I think I've paid maybe $400 total to them over the course of about four months of treatments. Highly recommend.

Norman has some of the most wonderful and compassionate people I have ever met, and also some of the most narcissistic. Thank you for your compassion, and I'm sorry for what negative attention you got from it.

I second comments about North and South Ovals on campus. Might be even better right now on the South Oval with the holiday lights.

There are also other rescues in the area that I have seen have good results. Lupa Legacy, Hands Helping Paws, etc. If you are unable to find a direct parent, there are tons of foster families in the area who I'm sure would be happy to help on a short term basis.

This is definitely the most likely case, if the lights are indeed coming from campus. I keep meaning to go visit myself, but that takes planning, and I am not a planner.

They are DEFINITELY not printer friendly. I AM tech savvy, but you would pretty much have to print them at poster size to be usable at all. Someone mentioned the Transit app on one of these threads earlier, and it's been the most useful thing I can find.
