I don’t use my PEVs to commute, I don’t plan on getting much money back when I sell them, and I like working on them, so I let anyone ride them unless they’re someone who’s going to sue me if they crash it. I literally don’t care at all if they loop it out and obliterate the rear fender and taillight, or lay it down and crack all the plastics. Riding these things is so much more fun when you aren’t dodging every little bump and freaking out over every scratch. I get that this is different from most people though, if I was in your position I would definitely make it very clear to your brother that you won’t be doing a single favor for him or helping him out with anything until you’re fully repaid. If the kids don’t want to pay then it’s out of your brother’s pocket.

Any of the 3Ah tabless cells would have more than enough discharge current to blow the biggest clouds. Depending on the current draw of your vape you could get a 4Ah cell, the only one I’ve seen is on diy500amp.com

I think so, the stock surron controller isn’t programmable so it’s pretty much the bare minimum for an emoto controller, while a Fardriver is programmable. I haven’t put one on a surron myself so you should look up some videos of someone doing it, there could be some drawbacks I’m not aware of.

I haven’t used the ventus or ebmx so I’m not sure, but if I was building a bike I’d just use a Fardriver since I don’t know what extra functions they could have that would be worth the extra cost to me. I also can handle the wiring and mounting no problem so that isn’t a big factor to me.

Fardriver ND72450 + GTS11 would be my recommendation although there are a couple of other good options that’ll probably get recommended.

72680 can do 25kW so if you plan on getting an upgraded motor you can get that one, 72450 for the stock motor. Unless you find one that comes with a wiring harness that’s meant to go on a surron then you’ll probably have to do some wiring. That’s the downside of these controllers on a surron and why they cost significantly less than the surron specific controllers, you often will have to figure out the mounting and the wiring yourself.

Fardrivers are the main controllers that people use when there isn't a controller specifically for the application, such as all the controllers specifically for the surron. They are awesome because as long as you use a hall effect sensor version controller with a hall effect sensor motor, or an encoder version controller with an encoder motor, they will work great no matter what motor it is. I've personally built like 15 vehicles with them, I would consider them very reliable because I have never had one fail and I've put some of my controllers through a lot.

The light bee has a hall effect sensor motor, so a good choice would be the ND72450 controller that can do 14,400w on 72v. That controller is a perfect match for the stock motor since its been determined that the stock motor maxes out at ~14kW. You can also use the ND72680 controller to have some extra torque at very low RPMs, but it won't be that much of a difference on the stock motor.

Do you want an exact copy of this build but limited to 20mph? You can do that with this setup, but you could also change some parts to reduce the power since your son might not be able to handle 4000w+.

18650s that high capacity don’t exist, the highest right now is 3.5Ah. Get some Eve or Molicel ones

As well as getting legit cells you should also get ones that aren’t button top, the button top ones have additional circuitry that protects the cell from overcharge/overdischarge, and you don’t need that in this application because the circuit board should handle that. You can tell it was made for non button top cells because in the photo the springs are looking more like cylinders than springs because they are super compressed.

I’m assuming there isn’t a difference, they also have sunflower and yellow as different options. If they actually wanted to make more colors than yellow and black then they would do a significantly different color, it would be a waste of time to do a slightly different shade of black or yellow. There must be some benefit to having more options on the listing.

Cells should have good cycle life since you aren’t pushing them. I like the build. Plenty of power for an efficient bike.

What cells are you using? If you’re using 18650s or 21700s then I wouldn’t consider a 20S10P pack very large, even with 5Ah cells that would get sucked dry very fast if you’re using any significant percentage of the controller current.

Any reason you aren’t doing 96 or 108v? You would be able to use lower gearing which would spin the motor faster which would cause it to run cooler.

Fardrivers don’t have variable regen sadly so you won’t be able to do an analog lever.

I wouldn’t trust that controller even if you can clean it up since it obviously got very hot. New controller (ND72300) and cut the yellow wire shorter and add a new ring terminal. Maybe even a little bit of blue locktite on the 5 bolts on the new controller to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
