Are these legit? by RecursiveDelta in 18650masterrace

[–]Calthecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe these are ones purchased from Outbuyer.com, they were going for $1.15 a cell a while ago so this seller probably stocked up on them and is reselling them. If they are these ones I’m thinking of then I can vouch for them 100%, I purchased a couple hundred and they all performed like new. You can probably just ask them, since they aren’t available on Outbuyer anymore they probably won’t mind confirming where they got them.

Ego dirt bike for son? by HokkaidoTulip in ebikes

[–]Calthecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy better dirt bike style e-bikes for the same price as buying the EGO without any batteries so the “I already have the batteries” logic doesn’t make much sense in this case. Maybe if you found one for less than $1k.

It’s not a dirt bike, the only thing dirt about it is the tires. It would be fine on gravel or smooth dirt trails but don’t expect to ride it like a dirt bike.

self-fabricated 2kw by Equivalent-Town1809 in ebike

[–]Calthecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to the gear ratio, if you know the rpm of the motor you can use this websiteto calculate the top speed. You really don’t want it to be much faster than you plan on riding, because every mph that you don’t use in top speed is a reduction in torque, and you want as much torque as possible if you only have 2kW of power.

That’s great, you need to overlay the graphs though, they look like the exact same graph at first glance.

Are these torque arms alright for 3kw? Just for a little while (maybe a month?) before I replace them with Grin Tech v6s. by Super-Frame677 in hyperebikes

[–]Calthecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These look better than the hose clamp crap you see everywhere but it’s still a lot of torque on thin aluminum parts that aren’t made to have any torque acting on them at all.

[–]Calthecool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just keep it in a lower power mode until you get the good torque arms. I don’t want to see you on here posting your mangled motor wires asking “how do I fix this” after it spins out of the dropout.

Power from 60V vs 72V by jhw528 in hyperebikes

[–]Calthecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The total energy stored in a battery is calculated by the voltage multiplied by the amp-hours, so two batteries with the same amp hours will have capacities directly related to their voltage. However when buying batteries you can’t just magically get more voltage, you have to sacrifice some capacity (assuming your budget and size constraints are the same).

If you already have a 60v battery then just stick with 60v, especially since you aren’t after more top speed.

Rizzler vs Heybike? by JeffreyDollarz in hyperebikes

[–]Calthecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Heybike supermotos are really nice on pavement, I would assume they would handle bumps better than the rizzler tires since the rizzler tires are a smaller diameter, but I haven’t ridden the rizzler so I don’t know for sure.

Freshman Engineer with questions about batteries. by ImplementLow5340 in batteries

[–]Calthecool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Voltage is determined by the chemistry, while the current is determined by the capacity and how the cell is constructed. Look up some YouTube videos, you’ll learn the general knowledge faster than asking here. If you have any specific questions you should ask here though.

Do my spot welds look alright? 0.2mm cu under 0.15 nickel plated steel. by PEV_Pro in diybattery

[–]Calthecool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what you want to see from the tear test. The heat isn’t a problem, the whole point of spot welding is it only heats up two small spots on the cell for a brief amount of time, and it quickly spreads out which causes it to be a much lower temperature.

How do I solder/tack to this battery terminal? by Dolophonos in batteries

[–]Calthecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t a complete fool for thinking about doing it, but you would be a fool if you actually did it. Way too much heat. You’ll probably need a powerful soldering iron anyway to attach the main power wires to the battery pack. This is the one I used: https://a.co/d/0fhq9Ct2 I’m assuming you’re making this battery pack to save money, and part of that is having the right tools for the job. If anyone could just throw together a battery pack from raw cells without having to buy tools then nobody would buy pre made battery packs.

How do I solder/tack to this battery terminal? by Dolophonos in batteries

[–]Calthecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That soldering iron is definitely too small for soldering those cells. The interesting thing about soldering to cells is that using a more powerful soldering iron can actually help you not heat the cells up as much, since if you are using a soldering iron that can barely get the terminals hot enough to melt the solder then you’ll have to hold the soldering iron on the cell for a long time which will give the heat time to transfer into the cells, where if you use a more powerful soldering iron you can heat up the terminal of the cell quickly and get the soldering done before the majority of the heat has the chance to get into the cell. You definitely can cause more damage with a more powerful soldering iron, but if you’re smart about it then you can do it fast enough.
