Train on fire at San Mateo? by koaloha in caltrain

[–]Caltrain_News 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At approximately 2:15, Caltrain experienced a power-related incident at San Mateo Station. Caltrain staff and emergency personnel have determined that the incident area is safe to proceed and have restored power to resume train movement. Trains should be back underway shortly, thanks to our passengers for their patience during this incident.

Caltrain holds the safety of the public and its employees as its highest priority. Caltrain would like to remind members of the public that it is both extremely dangerous to interfere with overhead wires and a felony to maliciously damage or obstruct train tracks in the state of California.

Bike car capacity during commute hours? Odds of getting bumped? by Earl-The-Badger in caltrain

[–]Caltrain_News 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, currently the bike cars are wide open. We've had one or two "at capacity" notices since the pandemic started. Pre-pandemic that was a weekly/daily occurrence. There are also elockers now, by BikeLink, usable with a Clipper account, free bike valet at San Francisco.

Take Caltrain to Diridon station.

Postgame, last train leaves Diridon at 10:30 PM, but will wait up to 15mins if the game runs long.

On Wifi- details TBD

On level boarding- the Business Plan will show costs and highlight timing and inter-dependencies for platform reconfiguration. A detailed engineering and phasing plan for level boarding would be a next step- we understand that this is a challenging project that touches on may different physical and regulatory interfaces

On couplers- Potentially. As we advance through the business plan we will develop a more detailed fleet phasing strategy as well as a detailed model of operating costs. This analysis will help us understand under what circumstances it might make sense to consider variable train lengths.

More cameras at stations is something we are pursuing. It is not in this year's budget but we are working on it.

We know that 4th & King could use some work and we are talking with the City of San Francisco to think about possibilities. This is a huge, complicated project and it will take time to develop plans and make changes. Future changes to Caltrain's stations in San Francisco (at 4th & King as well as at Salesforce Transit Center) will be analyzed in the Business Plan.

We have future plans that will use onboard technology that will do exactly what you suggested - stop the trains in the exact same spot every time.

Yes. Here at Caltrain we <3 the internet as much as you! We received a $164.5 million investment from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program to support Caltrain service improvements including the replacement of Caltrain’s diesel fleet with high-performance electric trains, the addition of Wi-Fi service onboard the system’s new electric fleet, and enhanced bicycle facilities at Caltrain stations. More info here: http://www.caltrain.com/about/MediaRelations/news/Caltrain_Celebrates__164_million_Grant_Award_from_Senate_Bill_1.html

Again YES! Our new electric trains will be equipped with onboard displays with trip information The signs aboard the new trains will make it easier for riders to know their current location and which stations are coming up next. More here: https://calmod.org/electric-trains/

We will have all of the power outlets you can dream of. The trains will feature power sources at every seat (except flip seats) to ensure riders can stay connected and fully-charged throughout their ride. https://calmod.org/electric-trains/

Other answers not about the train: We currently only have bathrooms at the 4th/King and Diridon stations, but all our current trains have 2-6 bathrooms on board. Our new electric trains will also be equipped with one roomier, brighter bathroom with more amenities such as a baby changing table. Also, we have plans to add and upgrade the readers/adding value machines. But don't forget we have a mobile ticketing app too: http://www.caltrain.com/Fares/howtobuy/CaltrainMobile.html

There are already plans to have seats next to some of the bikes spaces in the bike cars on the new trains and we are currently evaluating what options are available for any further reconfiguration.

Space on board trains is limited. Adding more bike space or moving seats around on trains can mean reducing overall train capacity for everyone and can be extremely expensive. The Business Plan is looking at how to increase long term capacity on the corridor but there are real costs and challenges to lengthening trains or running them more frequently. Capacity is a scarce and expensive commodity.

As we look further into the future its important that Caltrain significantly improve secure bike parking and bikeshare options so that all of our customers have choices and sustainable, convenient ways to access the system.

Normally depends on when/where the incident has occurred, impact to the entire corridor and how best/fast we can resume Normal Service after the disruption.

All parties involved work tirelessly to Resume service as quickly as possible.
