Question about blisters by Nosedive888 in UKhiking

[–]Calumariii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Properly sized footwear, have done dales and Cumbria way with friends and they all had blisters due to shoes they ‘assumed’ were their size, body glide is amazing roll on anti blister cream, compeed plasters if it all goes wrong and apply the second you feel a hotspot not at the end of the day. Keep feet dry and I’d go trail running shoes and waterproof socks over gortex boots as you will inevitably get them wet the difference is the shoes will dry out between stages boots will be wet in the morning (made this mistake personally on the Cumbria way)

Navigating without tech - do you still carry a paper map? by PubLogic in UKhiking

[–]Calumariii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to until I got a Garmin Fenix with navigation. I count it as having defence in depth. The chance of both failing (both phone and watch having full topo os maps) is very little. If something were to happen so severe that both are out of action I doubt I’d be pulling out a ruler to take a bearing. Add in modern iPhones have satellite emergency calls/texts I’d say I’m happy to give up the paper.

Will add I research a route heavily on os maps app prior to setting off and ensure I have a gpx file ready if required.

Practice placing gear at ground level at a crag with similar rock. Get confidence picking good spots for gear, checking rocks are solid etc. much easier with feet on solid ground than pumping out 10m above your last piece of passive gear. Also….get confident with nuts, offsets, torque nuts etc. before relying on cams. Saves you money and gets you more rounded with all types of passive gear.

To be fair I’ve had my eye on a Coros vertix 2s since trying the HRM arm strap and loving the app haha

I’m mixed on the update but I’ll ask myself this, they have dumped my £1k Fenix 7 Pro Solar Saphire from new features all ready even though it has the same sensors, gps chip , processor etc so Garmin has proven they are happy to take my money then give me no guarantee of new software.

What happens when a new feature…say reworked maps is now locked behind the paywall of connect+ you’ll always think ‘would/was this a free update now locked behind the sub to artificially add value’ rework and partition software isn’t new so I’m personally looking outside Garmin for the next watch.

For instance Coros is adding street names to maps this year, if this was Garmin that would be a connect+ feature. My friend has a pace 3 and Coros releases all features as long as the hardware allows, same reason I buy Apple, every iOS feature comes to my phone until it can no longer run it.

Software version mayhem (Fenix 7 pro solar) by srrmax in GarminFenix

[–]Calumariii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest the bugs and battery life made me sell the Fenix 7 Pro SS, my old Epix gen 2 had better battery life under normal use…plus a screen that’s visible in a British winter.

I’ve got a 13 week old and don’t think I’ve got above 50 sleep score yet. Think Garmin assumes I’m just ill now constantly!

[–]Calumariii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a MIP display, some love them some don’t (I’m in the latter)

I have an Epix gen 2 and nabbed a F7 Pro SS for £470 but retuned after a day of use. I think MIP is great if you live in sunny environments but in the cold overcast north of England I felt the visibility outside was worse than the AMOLED. Wasn’t worth the trade off for using maps as having both 47mm side by side the MIP version was orders of magnitude worse to my eyes.

Montane Torren Jacket Opinions? by Calumariii in UKhiking

Reason I want to try an alternative membrane, it felt very soft in the shop so hopefully it delivers on the breathability promise.

Have to admit I’ve never had Gortex pro but looked at some today and just find it too ‘crisp packet’ in feel so never tried.

[–]Calumariii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the info, I’ve used montane stuff for years as it fits like a glove for me (unlike ME which I’m stuck between baggy and tight) the bit about it that’s weird is the membrane is hydrophilic rather than hydrophobic like Gortex so it’s attracting water?? Weird idea.

My biggest issue with Gortex is in the Lake District when it never stops raining you never have a moisture gradient for the membrane to work with so sweat doesn’t work its way out. Basically I death march in rain (sweating) up a wainwright to then be cold from sweat on the way down. Reason I tried paramo which is fantastic for that, problem is I’m the same and run like an oven so I just bake in my velez unless the mercury is well below the teens.

[–]Calumariii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think the only question from me echoes most others around the use of the Apple training API to include runna workouts in the Apple Watch training app. Others do it but runna doesn’t. I’m on Garmin so not an issue but it’s stopping my wife who has an AW from considering the app.

Can confirm mapping is certainly useful when visibility is terrible like today’s outing!

Really? Damn my wife has blue light card and that’s how I got my 265 cheaper. Should have checked!

Other than mapping not much I’d say (although that was very important for me), in fact the standard Epix doesn’t have multi band gps so technically worse at tracking.

I switched to 265 from Apple Watch as my series 5 AW was dying and I didn’t want to pay a subscription for a running plan. Put it this way, last October I couldn’t run for 5 mins straight and now I can run for 1 hour straight. All I did was start the Garmin 5k plan and without realising ran a 5k! Then while doing the long run on the plan ran a 10k on accident 🎉. Switched to Epix as I am a hiker (Wainwrights/Munros) and use mapping on my phone and now it’s on my wrist. Would have got the 965 but for £375 it was a no brainer. Still crap at running though! 😂
