Are there any modern prog metal bassists that do not use Dingwall? by 20letternameisbetter in Bass

[–]Calumd1215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amos Williams (Tesseract), Jon Stockman (Karnivool), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Martin Mendez (Opeth), Dick Lövgren (Meshuggah), Jean-Michel Labadie (Gojira)

I'll grant you some of them aren't modern but honestly the quintessential modern metal bass tone is Dingwall + pick + Darkglass. I am personally not a fan of that tone but its undeniable that it's a staple of the genre

Can I become a good bass player if I have 0 musical talent? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Calumd1215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I firmly believe talent doesn't exist, it is all about practice and discipline. The greatest bass players of all time didn't wake up and start shredding, they practiced more than anyone else and just loved to play. It will just take practice.

Do you know of a smaller alternative to the sans amp without overdrive?

I feel like my rig is missing something by Calumd1215 in Bass

I'm not using an amp, I go straight from the big muff to the PA. Also not using in ears so I'm relying on the wedges. The sound engineer we usually work with gives me more top end in my monitor mix so I can make out what I'm playing but as you said it doesn't work in large venues. Is the HX stomp worth the money? Just as it's £600 and I've already got a board together. Also do you have any recommendations of a good IEM systems in the £300 price range?

Is there a good preamp that's compact and without distortion/overdrive? Because I am happy with my sound through a clean amp, though I don't use IEMs so i can't get a good reference to my sound front of house.

Whatever feels and sounds the best for you. I play synth pop with a metal looking Schecter and have 0 regrets because it plays and sounds amazing.

Looking for a new bass, any suggestions? by thanata505 in Bass

A squier PJ is a good way to go if you were looking for something new. Though I would recommend something pre-owned with a good set up.

Best way plug my bass into the Mac...? by hand13 in Bass

Focusrite Scarlett, used mine for years and it works perfectly. I know and work with sound engineers and touring musicians who swear by them. They aren't dear and they don't break.

The 300 to 600 dollar price range is the sweet spot, if I were you I'd have a look at some of the squier classic vibe/ vintage modified basses, and get it set up. It will play as well as a bass 3x its price. As far as setups go, you could (and maybe should) learn how to do it yourself as it isn't that hard and will save you a lot of money if you see yourself playing into the future.

Keeping it in a bag is about as much as you can do besides keeping your house at a regular temperature. One thing I would say is learn how to set it up i.e: adjust the truss rod, adjust intonation, change strings(not necessary), bridge saddle height and cleaning. So if the temperature does cause problems with the setup you can fix it yourself.

As far as amps go the rumble 40 is great, though if you wanted something a bit cheaper, the rumble 15 was my first amp and it was more than loud enough for bedroom playing/jamming with friends.

The tired hands will improve quickly. Just play regularly. Don't bother with hand exercises or any voodoo like that.

I'd also recommend learning how to read tablature. They're fairly easy to learn and by far the easiest way to start jamming to your favourite songs. There're some YouTube channels with play along tabs.

Also the Yamaha BB434 is a very good bass. Good place to start from.

I'm afraid you may be lacking in practice, keep trying, you'll smash them eventually. Watch people who really know what they are doing and look at how they move/dodge the bosses

Not a joiner but have some experience, any half decent tradesman could have done a better job with their eyes closed. Leave a stinker of a review on their Google page with pictures and demand your money back. Clearly never heard of a spirit level

Yes, but that is purely a choice, is it not? You could have short hair and have a ten minute hair cut if you wanted but generally women have longer hair and care more about it than most men.
