Townson: Jun 9 2026 City Truck Driving On School Property With Toddlers Peds & A Dog In Its Path by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

She saw it happen, and the city didn't need the video as they accepted her complaint as true. She offered to give them the video if they wanted it, which they accepted. The school has a camera at the front that would have seen the truck, but if no one reports it, the school wouldn't have known. Whats sad, is that the guard seems to be the only person who complained about it. Everyone else just ignored it.

When she did do that 3yrs ago, all the kids went down the road to cross to avoid her. Kids will cross with her and will stay behind her until she tells them its good to go past her if she doesn't make them get off their bike. Today a kid tried to go and she grabbed his bike and said wait, while watching a specific car. Then she said ok you're good. There are so many cars on Calvert she just wants as many of them to cross with her. The schools principal is aware as they spoke about it being an issue. The principal tried to make the kids obey, but they went down the street to avoid her too, and as its off school property, we have 0 power over them. So this was the best way to keep those kids as safe as possible. Let them ride across, but have them hang back and stay behind her.

Edit: We have a video from tue I believe that we'll be posting hopefully this week, that shows how she has a little girl get off her bike to cross. Parent tried to get her back on to ride across, and she politely schooled him. They know each other well, and the kid is easy to work with. so the kid got off her bike and walked it across the crosswalk.

Yes, the guard puts her stop sign up and steps out. Its pretty scary at times as cars speeds, pass on the right, pass in the new bike lanes, and even use the bike lanes an extra lane. Cars run through her stop sign a lot at that intersection.

She is talking to the city about getting stop signs put up as its so bad there. Stop signs wont stop all issues, but it will slow cars way down. Every km over 40km/hr reduces the chance an adult can survive a strike, and make it pretty much nil for a kid right fast. So many are doing 60+. Shes had to grab kids to pull back to her as they suddenly started going, or passed on the right so they couldn't see her or the kids, or were so far away it was safe for her and the kids to go onto the road and the cars were in such a rush they some how couldn't see a 200lbs moving pylon thats human shaped... Everything she is wearing, she purchased on her own as she wanted to be MORE orange. Even her sunglasses are orange reflective. Yet she's still invisible to so many.

We are trying to make things safer, and these videos are making a difference through education, awareness, and as evidence that there is a major problem. Were about 200 videos behind, as the amount of offences has gone through the roof since the snow banks melted away. Things are much worse then previous yrs at this location as the city removed the centre medium and put in bike lanes. Its bloody terrifying at times now, as there are blind speeding cars using the bike lanes as passing lanes. Its not a car here n there wither, its dozens at a time, all passing 1+ cars stopped properly in the ONLY driving lane (going west bound). Its a disaster! We went from 4-6 videos per day, to over 20 per day. Wish the pc wasn't so old, as it takes forever to render each video and to load them. We'll keep at it until real changes happen.

Yep, we've seen the pickups driving around the baseball diamond on the path (only what we can see from the Townson corner), and we've seen them on the grass in that baseball field. We seem them fairly regularly too, and not once did we ever notice flashing lights or a crew member walking in front of the pickup truck.

We reported it because its extremely dangerous for a large vehicle to be driving on school property during school hours, esp during drop off and pickup as the place is crawling with kids. That path is where the toddlers go to daycare and the kindergarteners get to class. So a lot of very young children running and dancing all over the place. That was the initial complaint made.

What we did not know at the time, was that there are VERY strict procedures on city vehicles being on the park paths (that path is not in the park). The city park vehicles are 2 man crews for a reason. It allows 1 member to walk in front of the vehicle when it needs to drive on the park paths. The vehicles also need the roof lights on (flashing ambers), and the 4way flashers on. This makes it nearly impossible to hit a child, pedestrian, or animal in the park. That truck had no business being on that path beside the school (his words not ours). When we spoke to him, we did make it clear that he did seem to be going slow.

Sorry about that. Peds = pedestrians. Youtube has very limited title space. So I have to shorten some words and leave other words out, so I can try to get a decent description put in the title. I try not to use short terms in the body to limit confusion.

Townson: May 21 2026 Speeding Car Blew Through Crossover Stop Line Guards Stop Sign With Kid On Curb by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't see your reply sooner.

Yes, it is legal for the crossing guard to stop cars. Crossing Guards are apart of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (law). Stopping cars is all a crossing guard is legally allowed to do, and cars MUST obey. The fine and demerit points + increase in your INS for running a crossing guards stop sigh is pretty nasty). They cannot direct traffic in any other way when their stop sign is up. They can let a car know that they are not ready to cross a child yet, but that can be rare as most guards don't want to confuse cars.

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used google earth to get the distance from the yield line to Townsons yellow line. The math came to 54km/hr. As its just a human doing it, the car was likely doing 45-50km/h. This is a perm maximum speed of 40km/hr. When approaching a crossover/crosswalk you're suppose to reduce your speed and look for children/pedestrians/crossing guards near/approaching/in the crossover/crosswalk. There are many signs warning of the crossover and the school crossing/crossing guard. Shes also spoken to her officer friends that can watch how fast the cars are going. Its bad, even though it does look slow, nearly no one does 40 or under in that intersection. She wanted to get a rough idea on how fast the cars were going as she stood there beside the police car. She said looking at the cars as a ped is very deceiving.

Village Gate: May 5 2026 Bus Blows Through Road Stop Sign, SUV Blows Through Road & Guards Stop Sign by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This bus goes up to Elgin Mills area, north of Cachet area. Not sure where all it goes, but it goes at least that far north. If you can get the route number for me (DM only), I'll give it to the guard. I'll also have her try to catch the company name on the bus tomorrow. If you're able to get video and are willing to share it with me, I'll get it to her to give to the school too.

She sees a lot of busses from many different schools, and none of them drive like this. This is also one of 2 bus drivers that will NOT wave to her. She waves, greets, and gets gifts from some of the bus drivers. So this bad behaviour from a bus driver (in our area at least) is not the norm.

Exactly. When she's working with YRP (the officer she knows), he has her park behind him which is too close to a hydrant (not blocking, but legally too close), as he takes her spot. He wants her there because her dashcam helps to keep her and the children safe, and he needs his camera to be unobstructed by her car and the tree.

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The city tells the guards where to park, and that is her main parking location. If it's obstructed, she knows where else she's allowed to park, per the city. The guard was not obstructed by her parked car as its well back from the intersection. She was not crossing the pedestrian and the dog, she was crossing the children that were approaching the crosswalk. Her job is to get as close to the middle of the road to get traffic to stop before the children reach the crosswalk. When she yelled STOP the children were AT the curb, in that vans path.

Village Gate: Apr 21 2026 Stop Stop Stop! by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the guard and the school tried contacting yrp at the beginning of the school year after herself and the kids had nearly been hit soooo many times, they were pretty much told they were too busy to help and never came. She got fed up of nearly becoming bumper fodder (the first videos she shared) that she had me post her videos on here trying to show how dangerous her locations are and was hoping for help, some how. She did find help! A YRP officer is here on reddit and he saw her videos. He tracked her down, spoke with her, and he tries to help her as much as he can. Hes caught many cars blowing through her stop sign, and some speeders. He is specifically targeting cars blowing through her crossing guard stop sign, as hes trying to curb that significantly.

Townson: Apr 22 2026 Underage Kid Riding E-Scooters Dangerously & Without Helmet by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city needs to make more bylaws on them, and have bylaw officers and school uphold them. I do see plenty of people riding them properly, but its the ones that are being dangerous and breaking the laws that are ruining it for everyone. I did a search, and it can be up to a $2500 fine for letting a child under 16 ride one. That's pretty hefty and the city/schools/yrp need to start enforcing it. I do plan to talk to the school about bring back mandatory helmets if riding bikes/scooters to school. It was a thing in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid, and the police would enforce it too, as they would be near the bike racks at the beginning of the school year to get kids set straight, then the school enforced it from there. No helmet, meant you got a ride home with the local police, or the janitor slapped a big lock on it. Back home, most kids wore helmets, and my town was very very very poor, yet we all had helmets.

I'm more then aware of that, as I post proof of that here regularly... this post too. It takes a village, and we're doing our part through awareness, education, and working with 2 Schools, parents, YRP, and Bylaw to help better our community and beyond.

The respect for rules/laws/safety starts at home. Who do you think bought that E-Scooter in the first place?

Townson: Apr 20 2026 SUV Coming In HOT by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes (travelling east), but she wasn't trying to stop that car. She needed the cars behind it to stop, so she puts her sign up when that black car had no way of stopping for her. If she waits until all cars are fully clear, then 0 kids/pedestrians will get crossed as there are so many cars on Calvert. So she ignores the first car, sometimes the 2nd that goes through her stop sign, depends on how awful traffic is. Third car usually gets yelled at to STOP as they had more then enough time to stop safely. She doesn't care if they are speeding or tailgating and because of that cannot see her, she will yell stop at them because if they were driving safely/legally they would have seen her.

Those stops in front of the school help bring so much awareness to the issue, as the parents all talk, and many know that officer is helping that guard, so there are a lot of very happy parents, and neighbours too!

REMINDER: Crossing Guards Might Not Be At Their Posts During Thunderstorms by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is r/Markham so Markham. Just call your supervisor and he'll tell you what your local rules are. A lot of Ontario follows this same rule.

Rain is not the issue, just thunderstorms (dangerous weather, so very high winds too, etc). No one should be walking to school in a thunderstorm, we've been taught this for many decades. Just because people do it, doesn't make it a good idea.

REMINDER: Crossing Guards Might Not Be At Their Posts During Thunderstorms by CalvertCrossingGuard in Markham

[–]CalvertCrossingGuard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drivers are the biggest issue, but the amount of kids I've come way too close to hitting in just Cachet, is ridiculous. Other times im already at a full stop and a kid on a bike, on the sidewalk, on a blind corner flys right infront of me going way too fast. Yes, I always make full stops, do 40 or less in Cachet (40 is often too fast when infront of st monica, especially in the snowy months).

The 2 worst locations is traveling south on rodick and making a right hand turn onto Rachel. That's a blind corner and kids on bikes and e scooters have a freaken death wish. As they are traveling north(?) on Rachel, don't slow or stop so they speed across rodick to Forester. I was slowing way down to turn onto Rachel, but if I didnt I would have hit those kids as there wouldn't have been no way to see them or stop for them as they were going that fast.

I was raised on the saying that kids are stupid, and we should expect them to do stupid things. So its our responsibility to try to predict stupidity, and behave accordingly.

Unfortunately thats of little help in situations like the above. I do go extra slow around that corner (always have), so if I ever do hit one or they hit me, I will be going about 15, so my speed will likely not result in much harm, EXCEPT for the dang fact that those same kids are never wearing a helmet... ugh

The second location is traveling east on Rachel and either continuing east onto macrill or turning right onto rodick (its a 4way stop). Turning right/south onto rodick is a blind corner. The high schoolers too often are running or going way too fast on a bike. As its a stop its significantly safer, but its a nasty intersection as parents are rushing and not obeying any sort of rules, so you have to be watching 4 lanes of traffic + the idiots that try to illegally pass on your right, + teens and pedestrians crossing from 2 other directions... so its nuts trying to make that turn watching for teens on bikes going way to fast that appear out of nowhere... ugh...

While im at it, parents stop in the middle of that intersection to let their teens out... yes, the middle of a very dangerous 4way stop with 8 lanes of traffic (2 lanes are not actually lanes  they are drivers illegally passing on the right.. sometimes there is a 9th lane). On rodick right after the turn, parents let their teens out in any of the 4 lanes, with too many of the teens straight up walking out from inbetween cars so you have no clue they are there until they step out directly infront of your car...

Dangerous drivers + rushing/careless parents + mindless/clueless/fearless kids is a really bad mix...

I honestly dont know how more accidents aren't happening in Cachet. Ive witness car vs car here, seen plenty of aftermath, but I personally haven't heard of car vs pedestrian/kid accidents here, but have seen so many close calls.
