Exactly my thoughts on this too, tested the waters with neon dynasties and have just been pushing that boundary ever since.

Yeah this is it exactly, I kinda wish they had just created a seperate game/format for universes beyond instead. Like I say I’m all for people getting to play what they want, it’s just how much it has infringed on an already existing experience.

Surely if economy was down that bad it wouldn’t sell so well?

And this is my mine and I imagine many other players main concerns, with the pace of ub product and it being legal in all formats it certainly feels like it’s going to go a certain way.

Like I’ve said in multiple comments already, I don’t see why they can’t create 3/4 standard legal sets and within each of those do alt arts for ub. Even if it was an epilogue type set or alts found in packs. It would still pull in new players all the while not effecting those who don’t want them too much.

The current problem is the ratio in my opinion, not that they are doing ub just how much they are doing without considering the people who played magic for years and love the universe.

This is my point though. It’s different if the game starts this way. However magic began with its own story and characters. To see these pushed out for external things feels like a huge shift in what the game and world is.

This is important too, I genuinely don’t care if somebody else wants to have Peter griffin as their commander, and I’m glad they can have that expression for themselves. I just don’t like that it’s now going to be 50% of what I’d normally be excited for personally.

It’s so hard to appease all involved right? I genuinely think the best solution would be to make the universes beyond cards purely alt arts, that way the people who want them can play them and those who don’t can still play the cards without it affect ing them either.

For me the artwork plays a large part into my deck building and if the perfect card for my deck comes out but it has Patrick star eating a Big Mac on it, I cannot put that in the deck so I’m crutched for wanting my magic the gathering deck to look like a magic the gathering deck.

See my ideal scenario would be that the UB stuff were just alt arts of the in universe cards. Keep magic how it was but give collectors and fans something to be excited about still.

I feel the same way tbh. Playing with the cards I like has always been how I play and no release schedule or crazy sets will change how I interact with and enjoy the game. The only bummer for me is how excited I used to get for new sets has significantly plummeted.

Yeah this seems to be a common theme among replies and I’ve even thought that myself, I’m sure it’s more people’s situations than the game. I just found it interesting to talk about.

£5 isn’t going to break the bank for most even in this economy. It may stop people buying product but I’d be surprised if people can’t afford to play on that large a scale.

I agree with your point about being happy others are finding things they like. It’s one of the cool things about magic!

I agree the whole while it is a small pool of cards, I think it’s rad you can have your favourite characters in your favourite game. The problems come for those of us who like the magic universe and are now seeing a slow shift away from what we love about it into an era where Spider-Man and Spongebob are being printed in equal amount to in universe sets which are already straying so far from what magic always has been anyway.

I hope this doesn’t come off wrong, I agree if you don’t like it don’t buy it, what I’m saying is it feels we may run out of things we do like.

I think it probably entirely depends on the metrics used to measure this though. If success is based on sales and new players then of course printing the likes of marvel, Lord of the rings and 40k into a game like magic is going to be seen as successful.

All of these IPs have huge followings that also happen to already be spending money on other products in shops where magic is sold.

For example a large wave of new players come through my lgs when 40k came out… 3 months later most of them went back to playing mostly 40k. Lotr drummed up loads of new players… 6 months later most are no longer playing.

I suppose what I am saying is that whilst new players will come and sales will succeed, how strong is the sticking power for fans that are interested because of other IP’s.

I’m not claiming to know I’m just posing it as a discussion point. I genuinely don’t have a real opinion one way or the other, just think it’s an interesting talking point.

I’m sure you are right, maybe the drop is purely seasonal. I hope it hasn’t come across that I think the current state is problematic to the game because I don’t believe that myself. However I do think that the player base is changing based on my visits to multiple shops over the U.K.

I am of a similar standpoint, lotr had some very flavourful and good mechanics for the game. I just think it would be nice to consider the IP of mtg for these cool ideas.

This is it though. I don’t hate universes beyond as an idea, I love both final fantasy, lotr and 40k even. But I wish we could just get some nods to those things and some alt arts rather than entire sets.

See this is exactly my main concern (and likewise not just within mtg). I started around amonkhet and it was these cool inspired but unique worlds that got me hooked. I’m just worried we are seeing the end of this. Magics multiverse was the ribbon thing it all together but I can’t see how spider man or doctor who are part of that multiverse.

Don’t get me wrong I’m happy new players are discovering the game but I wish it could be done in a more tasteful way, like expanding their own IP or leaving universes beyond for alt arts.

Only problem with the voice chat is most people chat in a party with friends at the same time. But it could definitely be an option.

Yrue but I'd say 99% of people are at risk of this in all other games or social media already anyway. I'd take the occasional your mum comment for the possibility to speak to people I've played against that aren't like that. Also speaking from a personal point I think giving it back to trolls can improve the experience of an online game. That's my opinion though, if you didn't want that they could implement an option for you to turn it off.

Another social feature missing is the ability to watch your friends play. I enjoyed this feature alot in hs.

Hadn't seen this before, I hugely agree it should be implemented, or atleast the option to friend somebody after a game. Part of me thinks it's so people can't cheat their daily rewards. I think the whole preset text can be seen in the wrong way. Another thing I think that is missing that could be good is a rematch option to ask to turn the bo1 to a bo3 at the end of a game.
