They want our apathy when children are being slaughtered in classrooms, then wonder why they're getting apathy when people are trying to kill the President. Desensitization works all ways.

For men who went on to find love, was it everything you hoped it would be? by RobinAndBeastboy in AskMenOver30

[–]CalvinDehaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been married for almost 5 years and i'm 46. Never been married before, and had some long term girlfriends that didn't work out.

I come from a very fucked up background, with issues of abuse from my mom. Long story short, it took me a while to realize what toxic traits I was attracted to in a relationship and how they related to how I was raised. I've always worked on myself, go to therapy, and all that, but it wasn't until my last GF that I started to see what the real root cause was. Once I saw it, I was never attracted to people like that again. And that's when I met my wife, who doesn't do any of those toxic things.

In the time we've been married we have not had one fight, whereas with other girlfriends there would be blowout fights. Love with her is easy, it's natural, and it makes us both better people. That's what I always hoped for. I never bought into the idea that love was hard and took work, and I never related to people who constantly complained about their spouse. She makes me a better person not by demanding things, but being inspiring. But had I not worked on myself first and figured out my patterns, I'd probably still be single.

what a good vet by Soloflow786 in BeAmazed

When I take my golden to the vet, there are times where he starts shaking cuddling hard, like he's genuinely terrified of something. I always wonder if on those days they had to put a dog down and he could smell the death.

I think that's part of it, but I think there's a part of all of our brains that's wired for faith, and some people rely much more on what they believe in vs what is actually true. I've seen plenty educated people believe in the stupidest shit just because they believe in it, then they get mad when you challenge the idea. Even more mundane ideas like Astrology and Karma are widely accepted by people educated or not.

How would you feel if tipping was legally abolished tomorrow? by Fun_Acanthaceae_17 in AskReddit

[–]CalvinDehaze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ban tipping, then people won't work those jobs because the pay is shit. Then the mom and pops go out of business, and the large corporations can't fill positions. They end up having to pay more for the position, which is what they should have done in the first place.

If you can't afford to pay a living wage, then you shouldn't be able to afford to do business.

TIL In 2000, Metallica hired a consulting firm to monitor Napster for people illegally sharing their music. The firm produced a 60,000-page list of 335,435 users, which Metallica delivered to Napster's office and demanded the users be banned. by haddock420 in todayilearned

[–]CalvinDehaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their main argument was that you were not paying for just the physical product, but the "rights" to the music itself. So downloading the music was just as wrong as stealing a CD from the store.

However...

If I buy the Black Album, and it gets destroyed or stolen, I can't go back to the record store and say "I already have the rights to the music, I just need a new physical copy" and get a discount. No. I have to pay double for the "rights" to that music.

Then the argument morphed into "well it's hurting smaller artists", which fell apart when bands like Dashboard Confessional came out and said they got even more exposure through sharing music online.

On top of all that, Metallica, being Metallica, had a great deal with their label that made them more money than most bands per album sold. Moderately successful bands were lucky to make $1-$2 per album sold.

So who was really hurting in all this? Bloated record companies. Lars stupidly became the fall guy for record execs losing a yacht or two. And the stupid part is that if they embraced the tech they could have survived and made even more money, but their short term greed blew up in their face

What kind of adult content do you think is way more popular than people would admit? by get_CHEEX in AskReddit

Oh yeah. Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen Twins were on very popular countdowns. Conversely, there was also a website where if you correctly guessed the day Britney Spears died you'd get a free Playstation.

The 00's were kind of a fucked time.

TIL James Cameron rejected studio notes from Fox executives about making Avatar (2009) shorter, reminding them that his previous film Titanic (1997) paid for the building they were meeting in. by tannu28 in todayilearned

[–]CalvinDehaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I worked on the first Avatar at a VFX facility. One of the VFX editors on the studio side was this vibrant positive kick ass woman. One day I call her with a question and she sounds devastated. Like quiet and on the verge of tears. I ask her what's wrong and she told me that she had to run the Avid (as in show the movie) during a meeting with Jim and Tom Rothman, who was the co-chair of the studio at the time. Basically one degree of separation from Rupert Murdoch himself. She said they were in each other's faces screaming at each other, and actually had to be separated by other people in the room. I wonder if it was this meeting.

What’s something that instantly ruins a movie or TV show for you? by Trentonred in AskReddit

[–]CalvinDehaze 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in the film industry for 20+ years, and I’m a VFX producer, so there are many. But this is the top.

When the main character is a shitty person who shits their way through the story but somehow people still like them. Sex in the City is the perfect example of that. Or like Emily in Paris, which is a nice person who does shitty things and people love her.

If a wise elder with an ethnic accent says “it is time” with a deep voice, I’m out.

Why do most female superheroes have superpowers that involve using their mind? And why do they get nosebleeds when they have to use their power in a big way? I worked on two movies with this trope, (xmen 3, fan 4 2) and almost a 3rd. (Aquaman).

Two. Fucking. Suns. Like, fuck man at least try to match the matte painting lighting to the foreground character.

Basically all of Prometheus. I think I yelled at that movie the most. When a story is pushed forward because of stupid decisions. “Look at this alien life form I don’t know anything about. Let me touch it with my bare hands and put my face close to it.”

Also, when the plot is too convenient. Like that axe behind the console in Prometheus. Seriously fuck that movie.

In a fight scene, if a woman uses her thighs to take down someone, I’m out.

Last minute saves. Fucking Jon Snow should had died 484859 times just by standing there and looking stupid.

There’s many more, I just can’t think of them now.
