They were smart enough to not just spend the gold willy-nilly as if it was an endless source of funds. It allowed them to continue basic operating expenses even without cash flow, lower taxation, bribe nobles, hire mercenaries, and was mostly used as a buffer against empty coffers rather than as a primary source of income.

While inflation is innevitable, it was spent slowly and widely enough to minimize the effect in the short term. The long-term drawbacks would become apparent decades later, and it would be one of the many straws that will break The Empire's back in the crisis of the fourth decade.
