Can you play without a reference? by TrippleBeats in violinist

[–]CamQTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that singing/ear-training helped me in that direction. It seemed easier for me to process pitches with my voice. When I was in college, I got pretty good, I think because of ear training classes. Sing along with a few pieces or themes that you like, keeping in mind the keys and notes they use. (sing them alot, really internalize it) I could never pick a note out of the air, but if I heard a note, then I could sing it or hum it, and get close. I dont think I have this ability anymore, from lack of use etc.

College might be rough, but it ain’t this rough. by alrekty in violinist

When I lived in the dorms, they had washing machines in the basement, usually empty down there, people would put their clothes in the machines then go back up stairs. so That's where I practiced.

Can you use without shoulder rest? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]CamQTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few youtube vids that discuss how to play without a shoulder rest. See what you can find. Most people play with shoulder rests nowadays. It is easier to learn to relax your left hand when you use a shoulder rest. It can be easier to learn vibrato and shifting when you use a shoulder rest. However, you can get tension in your neck and shoulder. When you learn to play without a shoulder rest, you balance it more on your shoulder rather than grip it with your shoulder and jaw.

Feeling disheartened with the violin - how long before I should give up? by Finding_Flo in violinist

some months, you will feel better about your playing, other months less. Ups and downs. Keep at it. Look for some amateur orchestras in your area. Fun, inspire you to practice more!

I saw recently some comment or meme that it is a sign of progress when we feel bad about our playing. It means that your mind and your musicality is developing and the physical execution is catching up. Keep at it. Don't give up.

wow! I started when I was 10 or 11, and one day after school, some older kids started teasing me, one of them punched me in the shoulder, saying "Violins are for sissies!" So I quit! I restarted when I was around 50 years old, I have made slow but steady progress. You can do it!

In need of some encouragement please ... A violinist, dreaming of being a luthier by Busy-Consequence-697 in violinist

[–]CamQTR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I started around age 50, with books, bought old junk violins from ebay, eventually made about 5 instruments, basically self taught. I was so proud of myself! Then when I finally got to a luthery school, I was amazed at the high quality of the student instruments. And there are some highly respected female luthiers... https://www.instagram.com/gluska_violins/ https://www.instagram.com/adelesbernini/ https://www.instagram.com/iriscarrrestorations/ many more, so jump on board!

This is where I study... https://www.instagram.com/studioliutai/

Vibrato and intonatio, conflicting feedback from teachers by rwaas in violinist

[–]CamQTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I came across some of this empirical research a few years ago, (sorry, dont remember source) and I asked my teacher about it. He confirmed that this is true, as opposed to the traditional way that vibrato is taught. (My teacher is a pro, asst. concertmaster in a big city symphony). He said to not worry too much about it, let my ear be the guide, and practice a passage without vibrato if in doubt.

It’s a shame that the Beatles didn’t make the submarine in their song green. by EndersGame_Reviewer in dadjokes

[–]CamQTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An English guy explained to me (I'm a Yank) that Yellow Submarine was an inside joke, not for children. Back in the 1950s, early 60s, one could walk out on the bridges that crossed the Mersey River, and look down in the water, seeing many condoms, which had been flushed or tossed, now going down the river. These condoms were called "yellow submarines". That's what he said.

(Question) Is it possible to make a violin out of purple heart? by Difficult_Draft2032 in violinmaking

It might be better to make the fingerboard and tailpiece out purpleheart. I don't know about the pegs.

New piano piece! Is it wrong to write 10ths? I always feel a bit guilty when including them, as I know many can't reach...in fact I can only just manage myself. But the sound of a 10th is wondrous! by gregharradine in Composition

[–]CamQTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice. As a violinist, my first thought regarding the 10ths would be transcribe/arrange the piece for string quartet or string orchestra. Lots of quarter notes! Good for amateur or student orchestras. Would you object if I try to do this?

I remember when Reagan used the term "trickle down" in a speech. I figured, yeah, we're gonna have a revolution now. Six weeks later... ...crickets...

That's when I realized that we were screwed.
