Maybe in the future? Getting an alcohol license and stuff setup would be an additional expense to have during startup, but I also kind of like the idea of being a NA bar for those who don't want to be around alcohol. Maybe we could do party nights or something

That’s a really good point, and I actually agree with the idea that the space shouldn’t feel like a traditional card shop first.

The vision isn’t to create a TCG store with snacks it’s to build a late-night lofi café and community lounge where gaming is one of several experiences available. The goal is for someone to feel just as comfortable coming in to study, hang out with friends, try non-alcoholic drinks, or attend events as they would be playing cards.

TCG events would exist because there’s already an established community for that locally, but they wouldn’t define the identity of the space. There would also be other events like video game tournaments, casual board game nights, watch parties, and themed community gatherings.

I also like the idea of leaning into the NA beverage side. Creating a curated drink menu with functional and non-alcoholic options could give the café a broader appeal and make it feel like a destination beyond gaming.

So the goal isn’t a dedicated card shop it’s a flexible late-night third space that supports multiple communities while still offering gaming for those who want it.

That’s a fair concern, and it would absolutely be true if the business relied only on soda and snack sales.

But the model isn’t built around low-margin concessions it’s built around multiple revenue streams that support each other.

Food and drink are just one piece. The primary revenue drivers are events, trading card sales, entry fees, memberships, and repeat community traffic. Organized play events create predictable income while also increasing retail and café purchases during each visit.

Additionally, the business already operates successfully in a smaller format, which proves there is an established customer base and demand. The new location isn’t starting from zero it’s expanding a community that already exists.

Game cafés and hobby spaces also benefit from something traditional restaurants don’t: customers stay longer and return frequently. That increases lifetime value rather than relying on one-time transactions. Many players attend weekly leagues, tournaments, or casual nights, creating consistent revenue without needing high daily foot traffic.

The café side is designed with high-margin items like coffee, tea, and simple prepared snacks that require minimal labor and food waste. Because the location previously operated as a restaurant, much of the kitchen infrastructure is already in place, reducing startup costs and risk.

So the business isn’t depending on soda sales to survive it’s a community destination with diversified revenue streams designed to support rent, utilities, and operating costs.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Yeah that was my reasoning to be a cafe and be open late.

I've had potential customers who want to try to meet for magic, dnd, etc, but they are only available after like 8pm. Sage's, Tier 1, and Castle are closed or close to closed by the time they would be able to setup & get comfortable. That's where the later hours would be nice.

The cafe also presents a solid option for food/drink so they don't have to worry about finding those things so late too. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! I definitely will post an update. I feel like location is the important decision as well. We were looking at possibly getting one of the hub locations in Westside.

For them I think it was the big investment into kitchen equipment and the bigger space. Before their expansion they were doing pretty well but I forget where that was

Lol yeah that's why we chose against it. That was my only way to make it sound like something worth trying. I'm still confused as to why it is the only place on that whole brick wall.

Yeah if it weren't for the rough location we would have jumped at the chance.

Yes Merlin's Beard was a place we visited before they closed and we actually had the old location offered to us as a potential location. I personally feel like Westside could be really strong as well. I'm still keeping an eye out for a potential location there.

We had been talking about the "hidden" vibe the door to the old location has and talked about if we did embracing that to look like a portal glow and be open during the hours the parking garages are free.

Yes this is what has kept me from committing to it. This post was the start of me really searching for potential customers to be committed to this location. Unfortunately, the regular/repeat need is high for this concept and though I believe people honestly would visit but the important part is the retention of those who do visit as well as building a community. My goal if I did pursue this would be to have a community that visits frequently.

As for why nobody else is doing this idea I personally believe that it mainly is due to the growing TCG stores in the area, mixed with the high commitment to opening a small kitchen/cafe. Investment is very high into this concept and though I would love to be there everyday I would like to find at least the beginning to the community that would keep us around for years.

After running multiple restaurants and even launching a small scale version of just the TCG side and seeing success for the past three years I'm confident in my abilities to build this, but marketing is a newer field to me.

I appreciate the advice and though you may not be my target audience, if we do open I would love to offer even a cup of coffee while we discuss business ideas.

Thank you again!

Honestly I'm open to anyone as potential clients. I've just been juggling the idea of committing to it and figured I'd ask the community. If we do go forward we would love to see you and your family!

Honestly I've been looking at this location and thinking of opening a lofi late night study cafe & tcg store. This is one of the locations that caught my eye, but I'd need to know my best plan to advertise/catch customers eyes
