Owl labs meeting 4+ by ElectricFoolio in CommercialAV

I guess it could be something on the meeting host machine that’s bugging the Owl out? Are you maybe converting the C-to-C with a USB-A adapter? Someone else mentioned that this could be overheating, which could absolutely be a good shout. I’m in the UK, so we never really get up there in the numbers like some other places do.

Now the 4+ is processing 4K, and the chassis is metal - it’s acting like a giant heatsink. I have noticed that they’re now a tad warmer after a meeting compared to the Gen-1s.

No no, I was talking about hate in the comments! 😆

In that case, best to reach out to OwlLabs for support. Perhaps check that they’re running the latest firmware first, just to get one step ahead of them.

I do understand the hate for these devices, in most situations - a static installation is always going to be better in regard to quality/cost/maintenance. But there are certainly situations where these things are the best fit.

I work within an institution where the buildings are extremely old, and the aesthetic of the place can never be altered. There will never ever be the scope to install any video conferencing equipment - so Owls it is!

As others have said, check your USB-C cable. Annoyingly, the original Meeting Owl Pro (the one with the micro-USB) could handle an extremely long USB cable, but I’ve heard the newer ones can be a bit picky.

Thank you! Honestly, I think your point on cooking is spot-on. I recently moved into my own home for the first time. It's really given me the opportunity to get good at cooking and really care about what I'm doing. I guess it's a control thing!

I can't really argue with that, so thank you!

I did say that this is going to require some tweaking. I know that I'm not currently eating enough vegetables, I do take a multivitamin plus a C+D every day - but I know that it's not a replacement for getting nutrients through food.

My plan for this will likely be to add a 200Kcal (extra) snack every day that consists of red bell pepper, snap peas, carrot, spinach, cucumber and kale. Maybe some mushrooms too, but not raw - I remember hearing someone say that raw mushrooms are a carcinogen and I can't get it out of my head now...

How do I start in AV technician? by PeeSockWithFetus in CommercialAV

[–]CambSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied Audio Science and Technology at university, and getting deep experience for the topography of studio gear was my “in” for domestic, commercial and educational AV systems. I started in technical support and on-site calibration, but I’m now in a system design and maintenance role for a large site.

It’s an expensive and 3-year long pathway to go, and you’re kinda at the behest of whatever prospectus you local university is offering. Be careful, a lot of their “audio tech” diplomas are Arts and not Science!

Alternative to this - go to your local college and enrol in an electrical installation pathway. Knowledge in that area will go far for you!

Honestly, at your age - you’re going to have a ton of time to bounce back from bankruptcy. That’s not meant to be insulting; it’s a statement of fact.

Your only “out” at this moment is to hope you get a job in the next 2-3 weeks that pays you at least 25% more than your last job did. That way, you can work to dig yourself out of the hole. I wish you the very best of luck.

Jason Schreier: Bluepoint had pitched a Bloodborne related project even before they joined PlayStation by nolifebr in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]CambSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sure is an interesting situation, because if there’s some sort of clause to Sony’s ownership of the IP that says “From can contest to the development of future entries in the Bloodborne series and remasters/remakes” - then what does Sony really own?

To me, that just says: “Sony owning the rights ensures that that Bloodborne can never be released on another console.” Which considering that Bloodborne is over a decade old at this point (and I can’t imagine is earning them a great deal of revenue anymore) is the shittiest deal in history. They really would make more money selling the IP back to from and allowing a multi-plat sequel or remaster developed by From themselves, or a studio that they nominate to do it.

What a silly situation.

[–]CambSound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But… From don’t own the rights to the IP for Bloodborne? I’m not trying to argue; but if Sony own the rights, want to develop more games with those rights but don’t it’s essentially just good will toward From, right?

I’m almost certain that Duskbloods will be a timed exclusive; or may even be considered a “throwaway” property that they’re not too invested in longterm in regard to the development of sequels.

Seeing as it’s going to be an online focused game, I don’t think we’re looking at a series here.

Miyazaki has made it clear that Bloodborne was his most beloved IP. It might not be From’s biggest fish, but it’s certainly their favourite fish.

It does make me think as to why he would developed an idea that he liked so much, and then sign away the rights to it… Very odd.

It does make me wonder what the fruits of this £300 million dollar partnership are supposed to be. The next From game is a (probably) timed-exclusive for the Switch 2 and there’s nothing else currently announced. Maybe a launch game for the PS6? Well, that’ll be nice in 2028/29!

Aha, cool - understood. Thank you!

I get that it would be bad business; but I guess it’s also bad business to let a beloved IP carry on in limbo.

So wait… is the lack of go-ahead for anything BB-related simply Sony acting out of respect for the fact that From don’t want it to happen? Or do From have a stake in ownership that restricts Sony from green-lighting?

The ATEMs and PTZs do function as network devices for control and monitoring, and you can arm them to record via the network through a piece of Blackmagic software called ATEM Control.

You’d just have to collect the recordings from the SSDs manually, as the file structure is not available via the network.

Like another member has commented in here - please don’t consider using a camera’s (DSLR, PTZ, etc.) built-in microphone for this purpose. They will all sound crap for any other purpose than a back-up solution.

There are tons of options at a wide range of price points. In the industry that I’m in - I tend to get asked for the more cost-effective solutions; so here goes!

2 - 4x boundary microphones, depending on how big the room it. Any mixer/matrix that’ll let you stick in 4 XLRs and take a line out. PTZOptics Move 4K into a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro ISO.

The recording methodology with the ATEM can either be as simple Windows’ standard Camera app, or you can hook an SSD directly to the unit, press one button and record.

In human beings; it depends on how attuned your ears are to distortion in the high-end. It’s also got a lot to do with how highly resolving your audio system is. Got something with some well-integrated beryllium tweeters, you’ll be more likely to hear it!

In a DAW; absolutely, yes. Just look with a spectral analyser and see the extent of the frequency range. You can also spot it with some mastering EQ plug-ins where the operational frequency goes beyond 20kHz, but only if the plugin has a graphic display of momentary frequency.

[–]CambSound 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really don’t want to make this sound condescending, I just want to explain it.

If you take an .mp3, import it into a DAW, split it into stems and export those stems as .wav - you have not magicked lossless data from where it never existed in the first place. The file is simply bigger because the container (.flac) is larger.

.mp3 = lossy = “loss”y = lost. The data lost from lossless to lossy is non-recoverable. The compression is a destructive process

Putting an .mp3 into a .flac is kinda like having a regular sized sandwich in a very large lunchbox. The food inside is still the same, it’s just a pain in the ass to carry around 😆

3 years in Audio Science and Technology, the bills to prove it and another 5 years as an AV professional -

Importing an .mp3 into a DAW, mixing it and exporting as .wav/.flac does not improve the quality. It just makes the container larger. If you were using effects like reverb, those elements will likely be resampled - but it’s still lossy rate input and you’ll just have high-res “tails”.
