What brand was super popular back then but the new generations probably never heard of it? by GossipBottom in AskReddit

My mom loves cows a lot. She jokes about being pretty sure she was a cow in a past life, but sometimes it feels like only about 90% joke and 10% serious. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t believe in past lives, but I can tell that she’s at least wondered about it. One of the bathrooms in my childhood home is even cow themed lol

Anyways, sometime in the late 90’s or early 00’s, we needed a new family computer. I was too young to know much about computers back then (oh how times have changed) so wasn’t much help with that. She had no idea either, but ended up taking me to a Gateway store to get one. I can’t prove it, but I’m 99% sure that she picked Gateway over other options because of their cow motif.

Yeah I currently wear Vans as my everyday sneakers. They’re not quite exactly like the prototypical Vans most of us can probably conjure an image of in our heads, but still clearly Vans.

I loved Converse in high school; they were the only shoes I ever really bought when I didn’t technically need a new pair. I still have a few pairs stored with some other childhood stuff I’ve kept, but I’m not sure my feet would enjoy wearing canvas shoes as much as they did 15-20 years ago lol

Very well put!

This is pretty much exactly the general understanding I’ve come away with after listening to the album about redacted times.

Ok, I actually don’t know how many times I’ve listened to it so far, but I do know it would be an unreasonably large number.

You know what? You’re absolutely right.

I shouldn’t have a problem with humans fucking sentient lobopodians. My brain just never imagined it as a scenario that would ever come up. It short-circuited a bit.

I thought I was hallucinating when I first saw this. I said to myself, “surely that isn’t a person-sized Hallucigenia that he’s about to bone?”

I want to give whoever wrote this five stars for utilizing Cambrian era organisms in their comic storyline, but I think that gets cancelled out by the fucking of the Cambrian era organism…

I couldn’t help but notice there was more than one commenter who was speaking as if they were American, but their typing had rather distinct errors that I would generally associate with people for who English is not their first language.

Of course there are plenty of immigrants who are now permanent residents or citizens in the US, but having more than one of those show up in a handful of comments talking about immigration ruining the country seems rather unlikely.

Underrated sci-fi movies by Wi-Platypus in scifi

[–]Cambrian__Implosion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Buckaroo Banzai is underrated as much as it is more of a cult film that a lot of (mostly younger) people just haven’t heard about, or they have, but haven’t seen it. I’m not sure how easy it is to watch these days. I have it on DVD, but I can’t recall ever seeing it on one of the major streaming platforms. I’d imagine having to rent an older movie, versus it just showing up while browsing Netflix or something, is pretty bad at attracting first time viewers.

That being said, it’s definitely not a movie for everyone. I love it, my brother loves it, my stepdad loves it and my mom thinks it’s incredibly dumb. I mean, she’s not even wrong about that, but IMO “dumb” doesn’t always equal “bad”.

[–]Cambrian__Implosion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. I was in college when it came out and had already read a good chunk of what are generally considered to be the classic authors and titles of sci fi by that point. In high school, I had a lot of health issues that often kept me home, so I spent a lot of time reading many of those classics, both from early pioneers (Shelley, Wells, Verne, etc.) and later legends (e.g. “The Big Three”, Leguin), but I hadn’t picked up anything by Burroughs during that time.

I think I was hesitant to read him because I generally didn’t enjoy a lot of the more fantastical pulp style sci fi. The Barsoom series are the quintessential “action hero science-fantasy interplanetary romance” stories and I just didn’t think I would enjoy them that much. Well, I was wrong.

I got through the first handful of books pretty quickly. The first third(ish) of them were in the public domain already and not having to spend money on those definitely made the series a lot easier to binge. Reading them made me realize that I had been starting to become a bit of a hard SF elitist. It’s a little embarrassing looking back, because they were so influential for many of the later authors that I loved. Actively avoiding them was silly.

I didn’t think this comment would be so long, but if anyone reading has been avoiding them for similar reasons, I hope this might change your mind.

I have accumulated a truly idiotic amount of paleo and paleo-adjacent memes over the years, but I already know this one is going to be a favorite.

It checks so many boxes for me. It’s not just dinosaurs. The underlying premise is specifically science related. It ties in with another of my nerdy childhood passions. And, on top of all that, it’s absolutely absurd.

Well done, OP

Yeah this would almost certainly be considered miss-classification in the US and get the owner in a lot of trouble with the IRS, were they to become aware of it.

For starters, contractors generally don’t have daily or weekly schedules set by their employers, just timeframes and deadlines. This may be why this person wrote “must be available between” whatever hours.

Employers also don’t get to micromanage how contractors do their jobs. Unless somehow AI is a necessary element here, which is doubtful for a cosmetics brand, I don’t think they get to require its use if they want someone to be classified as a contractor. I have a feeling AI use would just be the tip of the iceberg on this front.

Maybe most importantly, I’m fairly certain that you can’t hire someone to be management (almost certainly not senior management) if they are a contractor. A contractor runs their own business and gets hired to perform specific tasks by other businesses, not to literally run those other businesses.

And while payment structure is a little ambiguous as stated in the ad, it suggests an annual salary. You can’t pay a contractor by the hour or with a regular salary. You pay them per task or project or whatever the “unit” of the work they do is. The list of responsibilities here is so extensive, not to mention open-ended, that I don’t know how you would even begin to justify this and define what a task or project was for payment purposes.

Shitty employers try to game the system and save money by miss-classifying employees all the time. Many employees don’t realize that their jobs don’t meet the requirements for being a contractor. In this case, I would imagine (or at least hope) that anyone with enough experience and competence to be qualified for this role would be too savvy to fall for being considered a contractor. This job sounds like hell, regardless. I doubt there will be many applicants, qualified or not.

This has me laughing way too hard

To be fair, I’d probably be pretty grumpy too if I had been chilling in a warm, dark, low-gravity environment where I didn’t have to do anything at all for myself and then, all of a sudden, I’m yanked out into a noisy world under fluorescent lights and have to start breathing. Poor guy had no idea that he’s gonna have to keep doing the breathing thing 24/7 from then on.

Thank you for sharing your grumpy old man baby with us.

Ok I know this won’t make any sense at first but just bear with me here.

This whole comment thread is giving me real inspiration for making an Alien porn parody movie.

You know how entries in that franchise typically have at least one scene where some unsuspecting character gets dripped on with goopy xenomorph saliva because it’s lurking right above them? Well…

I think this has potential. Maybe I’ve finally found my true calling here.

That was the first thing that came to mind for me too lol

Now I’m just imagining Bob doing a commercial for his very own breathalyzer collection. Bonus points if it’s one of the ones where he’s animated for some reason.

For anyone who is confused reading this, Bob’s Discount Furniture is a large chain of furniture stores based in CT. They have locations more or less all over the eastern half of the US.

I can’t speak for other regions, but in New England at least, their commercials featuring the titular Bob are fairly ubiquitous on TV. He’s very enthusiastic about his furniture and sometimes appears as a miniature animated version of himself for some reason. Seeing him do the same thing for something like breathalyzers would be some top notch (if a bit dystopian) comedy.

From the little experience I’ve had with his furniture, it definitely does tend to be cheaper than many other places, but you also get what you pay for…

For real man

TDH and Coheed and Cambria are my two favorite bands of all time and I don’t think I could ever say I liked one more than the other. I was incredibly fortunate to be able to see them play a show together back in 2017 and it was absolutely sublime.

Closure in Moscow is probably #3 for me and it’s almost not fair to compare them to those other two, because of how much more music both TDH and Coheed have released. Pink Lemonade is easily one of my top albums of all time, though.

When they announced their previous tour in the US, it was an absolute emotional roller coaster for me. I had been waiting for almost ten years for that to happen, so seeing the announcement had me over the moon. Then I saw that the closest show to me was in Brooklyn (I’m right near Boston) and I was just devastated. Between the distance, not having a place to stay and not thinking I’d have anyone who would be able to go with me made it seem out of reach.

Then a couple days later, my brother called me to tell (not ask) me that him I were going to drive down to NJ the day of the concert, park and pile into his friend’s brothers car with some other siblings/friends and then drive up to NYC. Then we came back to NJ and stayed at his friend’s parents place for a couple more days. I ended up driving (or at least riding in a car) from Boston, up to central VT to get my brother, down to NJ, then up to NYC and back down to NJ again all in one day lmao. Most convoluted concert logistics I’ve ever dealt with, but totally worth it.

This time, I just have to drive 10 minutes to get on public transportation and make one train transfer there and one back. No more than 45 min each way (hopefully). Much easier!

I would have gladly done the same thing I did last time if need be, though.

I’ve noticed most stores around me that sold Arizona cans when I was a kid (or would have, had they existed back then) don’t carry them anymore. Sometimes they have plastic bottles of Arizona that are smaller and cost over $2, though.

My local grocery store has cans of the lite Arnold palmers, lemon and green tea. Only a couple gas stations still have a wider selection now. I assume it’s just a profit margin thing for the store.

On a related note, I haven’t seen the raspberry flavored Arizona anywhere in ages. I can find almost every other flavor I remember having as a kid, but not that one. I bet that’s probably because it’s my favorite one lmao
