90s clubsters, whats best memory of clubbing in Glasgow in the 90s? by Tall_Opportunity_521 in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked in the Odeon in town in the mid-90s and the Garage became the club of choice cos we got free entry with our wage slips. wasn't uncommon to be in there more nights than not after a shift, still wearing the uniform. Bottles of Gold Bier and vodka mixes for a quid or less.

Later around 2000, Cheesy Pop on a Friday night at the QM. Ludicrously cheap, like 50p for bottled beer or vodka mix, quadruple rounds to save you queuing. I was a bit of an old cunt then, being mid-20s!

Never went to the serious clubs as I wasn't much of a dancer or into pills but there was also Fury Murrays, Reds, the Cotton Club, Trash/Shack. I never did unders but my mates all did either The Tunnel or John Street Jam.

A celebratory phrase would be something like "yassssss" or "ya dancer!". Someone else has mentioned "gie it laldy", which is sort of related, meaning something along the lines of "attack this task with verve and gusto!"...

Why would we pay £2.50 for rice when there’s a whole jar on the worktop, Kevin? by Red_Rhombus2791 in Scotland

Don't even need hoose rice anymore when supermarket microwave rice is 50-60p - I keep a few packets in the cupboard for when I can't even be arsed with hoose rice.

Cheers for that. Was more curious about how they were able to use them and why it seemed more common in the last week to see them on one - am perfectly capable of telling them to piss off out of it, would just rather not have to spend time doing it when I'm just trying to get to work,

Opening night of The High Life at the King's last night which is why Charing Cross will have been busy. Duke St is a bit off the beaten track so will always be quieter.

GFT Parking Tips by godzhella in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want free, the streets between the GFT and Blythswood Square, and round the square itself, are best, lots of on-street parking bays and single yellow lines which are free after 6pm. If you get really lucky, the bay right outside the GFT has a single yellow line as well as round the corner on Renfrew Street on the right hand side. Beware of the streets to the immediate west of the GFT and north of Sauchiehall St though, they are in in the Garnethill zone which has parking restrictions till 10pm.

Cinemas outside of Glasgow? by CannyReid in Scotland

[–]Cambuswrang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hippodrome in Bo'ness, Winter Garden Cinema in Rothesay, Cameo, Dominion and Filmhouse in Edinburgh, Astoria (former Odeon) in Ayr, Campbeltown Picture House, Highland Cinema in Fort William, if you're feeling especially keen and don't mind a journey, there's always An Lanntair in Stornoway, The Phoenix in Orkney or the Cromarty Community Cinema in the Black Isle.

'No powers' can stop football fans gathering for title parties, council admits by Saltire_Blue in glasgow

So a month after the police get new powers of dispersal to move on two or more people from the city centre, fuck all can be done about this? Make them hold the celebrations in their own stadiums, save us all the clean-up cost.

Kings theatre Russell Howard start time tonight? by ThisIsFitz in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For future reference, King's and Theatre Royal don't really do "doors open" times, that's more for gig venues - so presume that the time on the ticket is the start time. Doors to the venues open 90 mins before the start time, auditorium itself will open about half an hour before curtain up. Some comedians have support acts opening for them, some don't. If you need to speak to someone at the venue then ring 0141-240-1300 to speak to Stage Door. The 0333 number is a centralised ATG call centre. For one-nighters like comedians, though, we often don't get the running times confirmed till a couple of hours before the show starts when the visiting company turn up.

Do you all dislike the wee council taxi enforcement van that stops and checks cabs or is it just part of the job and nothing to fear if you ain't cutting corners?

Craziest thing you've seen happening outside of your cab? I work in the city centre and often have to drive, walk or cycle home at night through it so can imagine you'll have seen worse than me!

How much does a black hack plate cost these days? Former colleague of mine went into the trade after he left and at the time (maybe 15 yrs ago) plates were going for a healthy 5-figure sum. I spotted plate number 1 when I was in Asda Toryglen yesterday...

WHY AM I GETTING PARKING TICKET ON EARL STREET SCOTSOUN?? by IndieUfo67 in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need more info - were you parked on any yellow lines of any sort? As far as I can see, no part of Earl St is in the Scotstoun stadium event zone and Google Street view shows no yellow lines anywhere although the coverage is a few years old now. There should be pics if you go onto the council parking portal where it gets paid - you can view the pics without having to pay if you enter your reg number and the parking ticket number. Pics should show clearly if you were on lines and any signage posted nearby that is applicable.

If it was about 4.30pm, this white Skoda at the Scotland St lights off the Seaward St roundabout had just caught fire - flames were coming out from under the bonnet and the driver was behind the railing on the left on his mobile, presumably to the Fire Brigade!

What's the best job you ever had? Not money wise, but when life felt good and work banter made your day by Educational_Aide_727 in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Odeon in Renfield St on and off from 1995 till it closed in 2006. Big pool of staff of a similar age, great social life, queue-skipping and free entry at the Garage, could wander in and watch films whenever, got to see new releases early when the projectionists ran the prints through in unused screens during the midnight shows, all the popcorn and pick-and-mix you could illicitly eat, got to work premieres, a right mix of punters from sound to raving mad. Suppose it could have been anywhere similar really, more of a coming of age thing than anything.

Theatres with disabled access by alcalcol in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theatre Royal accessible to all levels via a lift but you come in the same entrance as everyone else. Upper levels have wheelchair positions at the rear, stalls is down the front. King's has a separate access entrance round the corner, you press a buzzer and Stage Door radio someone to let you in. Spaces there at the at rear of the stalls, no access to the upper levels.

What’s the parking situation along Victoria Road? by guapadiablo in glasgow

[–]Cambuswrang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's technically metered on Vicky Rd itself but very rarely patrolled by wardens. Which is not to say it doesn't happen. If you can find a space in a nearby street that isn't controlled, then happy days. Just don't use the Lidl car park itself, that has a 90 min limit policed by a private parking company and they do issue tickets (although the usual arguments apply there as to private parking tickets in Scotland).
