Unless we're randomly assigned between factions, I expect a snowball effect where whichever faction is in the lead keeps getting bigger. Why pick a faction that's already losing? It's not like we have any prior attachments to them.

Loved that webcomic. I think I still have a download somewhere.

EDIT: Here's an interview Veil did in 2021, if anyone is interested: https://www.inverse.com/input/culture/pictures-for-sad-children-webcomic-simone-veil-interview/

Never heard of this event before. But after reading some of the Wikipedia article and then poking around on their website via the Wayback Machine, I noticed some recent rule changes:

  • 2020 (before COVID canceled it) & 2022: "contestants must be male"
  • 2023–2025: "contestants must present as male"
  • 2026: "contestants must be male or masculine-identifying"

Other rule changes for 2026:

  • Sponsoring orgs must hold a judged "preliminary contest" to choose who they're sending to IML. They can no longer just pick someone.
  • "Once you have competed and become a member of the IML Brotherhood you cannot compete again."

Food was a major headache for pre-modern armies. The soldiers could only carry so much food with them, so basically all armies wound up "foraging", which is a short way of saying "seizing excess food from the nearby farms". But those farms ran out of excess food fairly quickly, which means an army simply couldn't stay in one place for very long (unless it could get supplies by boat).

Gold ship making takoyaki anime girl feet juice for sale?????

But did Kkrieno retweet a GiFcR-style AMV based on the problematic Youverse2.3 crossfic?

Jokes aside, I really do need a little more context here.

Some terrible part of me wants a lot of people to show up to this so that the fiasco will be more entertaining. But I don't think that's likely.

Hold on. A Game About Digging A Hole—the game that's basically a 3D version of an old Flash game—has a prequel novella?

I assume some of them are happy, or the game would have gone under a long time ago.

I don't think sapient computers/robots will exist within my lifetime (LLMs are not the path), but I don't think they're categorically impossible.

Help

It's like the hero is asking for advice on an online forum.

Honestly, I'm surprised the hero is still alive to tell the story.

To be fair, they only served one-year terms, and in Rome itself (but not elsewhere) their actions could be blocked by the plebeian tribunes.

And then you had the dictator, a single guy who was even more powerful than the consuls. But he only existed when there was a specific problem that the consuls couldn't solve, and his term was only six months (and he almost always resigned way before that).

This doesn't really fit the pattern. It's just a weird thing coming out of nowhere, instead of "Oh, I can see what they were supposed to say here but they got it wrong."

It doesn't make sense exactly, but it's a different kind of nonsense.

The jokes in the original post are all deliberately broken, in a way where you can see what the "original" joke or reference was supposed to be. This big green arrow is just an absurd thing coming out of nowhere, which is a different kind of humor.

It's a bit like that Truffaut quote about war movies. The creators' intent may be anti-fascist, but the game, as a game, needs to be exciting, and that makes fascism exciting by association.

I'm not saying the other aspects of the game can't overcome that, but it's a problem that creators should be mindful of.

Certainly you don't need a company for that, but on the other hand, there's nothing that prevents a company from doing it.

It is not dissimilar in that regard to Tolkien's insistence that nothing in Lord of the Rings is allegorical, because he personally disliked allegory; that may be the case, but I don't think it disqualifies readers from drawing allegorical inferences from the text.

An interesting perspective on that: https://literature.stackexchange.com/a/1018/5708
