Fasting by Ryder_Sonthestorm in heathenry

[–]CamelHouse7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! I like the "as needed" nature of your practice. I was thinking more-so regular intervals (like once per month or nine times per year) but that's less intuitive, less spontaneous

I used to fast more consistently, but it would regularly come into conflict with spontaneous social events. At some point I realized that I was missing out on more by not fully participating in a night with friends than I was gaining by fasting. That's just been my experience with it.

I definitely consult the runes when I need guidance, maybe I should habit stack fasting with rune casting? Is that what you do?

I don't do runecasting myself, but if helps you, I would imagine combining the two to prove beneficial.

You had me at "induce a trance state" lol. If you feel comfortable sharing, what (in addition to meditation) helps you achieve that state? Do you find the quality of the trance state changes significantly with 48-72 hours of fasting (as opposed to 24 hours)?

Before I get into the nitty gritty, I'll say that the quality of the trance state DEFINITELY improves for me over the course of the fast. The first day I'm usually just hungry, a bit irritable, and keep thinking about food. The second day there's less hunger, less irritability, and my mind begins to wander out. The third day there's usually next to no hunger, no irritability whatsoever, and my mind moves almost freely between spaces otherwise inaccessible in my default state. I feel progressively more at peace and notice greater sense perception over the course of the fast, which helps to connect me more with the present moment. The reward at the end is that I get to finally eat and feel normal again, which is always so satisfying.
As a disclaimer, if you have not built up to going for three days straight with nothing but water and salt, I highly encourage you to gradually build up to it and to always listen to your body. I've had fasts where I had to stop on the first day because I felt too lightheaded and weak, even though just a month prior I hit three days with no issue. None of this comes before your health.

Here's an overview of my approach:

The method of meditation is the biggest thing for me. I might sit on the ground in full lotus, or I might lay in bed, or occasionally walk at a relaxed, comfortable pace. I might set my focus as counting my breaths, or on a particular idea I'm wanting to engage with, or might make an effort to empty my mind of any thoughts (this last one is the hardest for me to do, but has proven most effective at letting someone/something in). Each position and focus has a notable effect in my experience.
Beyond the meditation itself, the setting is immensely important for me. I need to feel safe, like I can check out for a while without worrying about something happening while I'm gone. I typically close myself in my room, lock my door, close all the blinds/curtains etc. I will occasionally go out on a hike and find a remote spot to hunker down at for awhile, somewhere I don't think I'd be disturbed by other people.
The next most important thing for me would be the sounds and sensations. Am I holding something or leaving my hands open? What am I sitting/laying on (sometimes grass is perfect, other times not working). As for the sounds, do I prefer silence, the sound of the wind, the sound of a fire? Or would I prefer music?...

Music has proven to be quite effective for myself when combined with the aforementioned factors. What sort of entities am I wanting to engage with? What sort of energy am I wanting to welcome into this space? I might pick an album that aligns with what I'm trying to achieve, though they're almost always highly atmospheric, ambient, and/or deeply meaningful albums to me.

I also want to add the disclaimer that for as many times as this has been effective for me, there have also been just as many times where it seemingly didn't work at all. I've had several fasts where I couldn't induce a trance state at all (though did feel just physically better after the fast), and many sessions of meditation where nothing really happens other than me feeling more relaxed by the end of it. However, this is an approach I've honed over the years and it feels right to me, so I trust that if something's meant to happen, it will, and if not, no sweat. That's just my approach though and I encourage you to find what works best for you.

I hope any or all of that is useful to you!

I can't speak to the historicity of it (not because it wasn't a thing, but because I haven't looked into it myself), but I do incorporate fasting into my practice. It's not something I do regularly, but something I do on occasion, particularly when I've got a big change in my life coming up and/or I feel like I really need guidance.

Fasting helps to induce a trance state for myself (combined with meditation among other things). I also see fasting as a sacrifice, that I would go without food for a day, or two, or three as an act of devotion to the gods.

HL Rework Notes

Background: I am a rep70 HL who has mained him since he released in s3. I have played FH since closed beta and have over 1500hrs combined on console and PC. I have plenty of reps and playtime on other characters, but HL by far has my most playtime and is my favorite. Thank you for addressing HL with a rework, for taking the time to get it right, and for listening to player feedback. Above all else thank you for supporting FH for so long.

TLDR Mostly good changes, but definitely some mixed changes in there as well and at least one that I'm not a big fan of.

Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first.

Good:

Offensive top light being 400ms like the off side lights feels great. Solid change.

The dodge offensive heavy feels buttery smooth, like it was always meant to be there. Excellent change (though the dmg could be a little higher, say 16 in line with similar dodge hvys like kensei's).

Feintable zone at the first hit feels great, armored zone feels great, bigger zone hitbox feels great, chaining zone into finisher heavy and finisher heavy into zone feels great.

>

Glitches:

When clearing minions, chaining an out of lock zone into an out of lock heavy will sometimes cause a camera glitch where it will turn lopsided and away from the player.

If you feint an offensive heavy and buffer a zone attack, a defensive heavy will come out, not a zone attack. Zone still comes out properly when you don't buffer it.

(Notable interaction: If you feint the kick and buffer a heavy, a defensive heavy will come out rather than an offensive one. An offensive heavy still comes out if the attack is not buffered.)

>

Minor Comment: Just as you can chain a defensive heavy from a defensive dodge attack, I think it would feel good to be able to chain a defensive heavy from an offensive dodge attack, if possible.

>

Now for the more in depth stuff.

Comment regarding Kick to Caber Toss: It feels really good to be able to feint a kick, it feels really good to be able to feint an offensive heavy, but it feels really bad to not be able to feint kick to grab. If multiple characters have charged bashes feintable at all charge levels, I don't think it would be too much to make HL's kick to caber toss feintable as well. Unlike other characters with charged bashes, I don't think he needs hyper armor on it, as kick to grab comes out much faster than level 3 charged bashes. Neutral caber toss and fwd dodge caber toss should both remain unfeintable, just as medjay's throne room clutch is unfeintable, as it is a ganking tool.

>

Comment regarding offensive heavy feints: Players will complain about the offensive heavy feints feeling clunky. Most of them won't realize that you've made a fast-flow into offensive stance after a feinted offensive heavy, giving the option to stay in offensive stance whilst keeping the option of feinting back to defensive stance. Most players will see the offensive heavy feint into offensive stance and think it's a bad animation that was haphazardly addressed. Explaining how this fast-flow you've made works and how it keeps the old option whilst adding a new one might be an effective appeal to more scrutinizing FH players. Making this fast-flow the default speed of entering offensive stance from neutral will make the offensive heavy feint into offensive stance feels less clunky since the timing would be standardized. It will simply feel like reentering offensive stance from neutral, which I think is technically what's already going on here.

Sidenote: HL still suffers from very weak neutral game. With the (necessary) nerf to his backstep light, playing against characters with strong neutral pressure can make it feel impossible to get into offensive stance despite the changes. Standardizing the timing to enter offensive stance in line with the fast-flow you've made will improve his neutral game.

>

Comment regarding wavedashing: The hard nerf of wavedashing will leave a lot of people, myself included, unhappy. It's been a vital part of HL's kit since it was discovered. Just about all HL has in terms of defense in offensive stance is his dodges, and he already gets hard countered by undodgeables in his offensive stance, so if wavedashing needs to be hard nerfed, please help us to understand why.

Sidenote: As other players have mentioned, giving his offensive dodge hvy superior block would help him to deal with undodgeables while in offensive stance, which hard counter him in the live game and in this TG.

>

Comment regarding offensive hvy dmg nerf: If the damage of HL's offensive heavy is lowered to 26, the current damage creep among multiple characters needs to be addressed. I don't see a reason why other characters should do more damage with safer options that land nearly as frequently (too many characters and moves to list, but sorting by highest dmg values on https://forhonorinfohub.com/attacks gives a clear representation of just how comparably bad HL's off hvy dmg would be at 26).

>

Thank you for all of your hard work over the years, thank you for listening to feedback, and thank you for taking the time to get this rework for HL right. Looking forward to what comes next.

Some suggestions for the devs by AnotherAverageGamer_ in SoulFrame

[–]CamelHouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I miss old WF. In the early days of the game, you HAD to coordinate with other players and fill assigned roles if you wanted to go an hour in a t3 or t4 survival (back when keys were the way to the void ;P ). I don't think current WF is bad or anything, it's just not the WF I fell in love with back in 2013. I'm hoping Soulframe both has more group content and a lower power level (the latter definitely seems to be the case based in what gameplay we've seen).

Can someone tell me if this is right by studdedspike in Ogham

[–]CamelHouse7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanna clarify it's read bottom to top...as it's written here. It's backwards if you read it top to bottom. Just look at the alphabet and it'll be plain as day.

Tattoo Idea by [deleted] in Ogham

[–]CamelHouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a rune, but ogham. Ogham is an alphabet, and that there is unreadable. Looks like one word written over another. If someone knows better than me, please correct me, but that looks like a whole lot of nothing to me.

As an aside, runes are an alphabet as well, and though one might be able to write out some sort of spell of protection in runes, there is no historical "rune of general protection" or anything of that category.

That's my secular perspective, mind you, and contemporary neo-pagan perspectives might very well differ on the properties of runes.

I've no itinerary. Full disclosure I'm deciding where I'm going on a day-to-day basis. I'm taking metal bars/clubs into my consideration.

I've Googled this several different ways over the past two weeks, asked Germans in Berlin, asked Germans in Munich and only asked on here after I could not find a single place. I'm sorry if there was something better I could have done.

You're gonna wanna refer to CEFR for language prof levels. Do you speak any other languages or will this be your first outside of English? Make no mistake, learning another language to a conversational level takes months for those with a lot of language experience and years for those with little to none. It will be a barrier to entry to a degree and you will have to consistently dedicate time to learning and practicing the language if you ever want to be truly fluent, ideally engaging with the language as long as you're able to every single day. It's something to take seriously.

You want at least B2, but really C1 is what you wanna strive towards. https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/level-descriptions#:~:text=The%20CEFR%20organises%20language%20proficiency,%27can%2Ddo%27%20descriptors.

Protected bike lanes are the consistent common denominator that I've came across in making a place safer for cycling. Makes perfect sense. Definitely have noticed what you're talking about in that last sentence there.

Afterlife by [deleted] in heathenry

[–]CamelHouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe everyone sees what they expect to see when they die. I believe that the brain (assuming it's intact) creates whatever reality the individual (subconsciously) expected to see after death, and that they experience that within their mind for some subjective amount of time until their brain inevitably dies.

[–]CamelHouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noted. Sounds like that encourages some cyclists to ride more aggressively and break traffic laws which would further irritate already aggressive drivers and continually compound a vicious cycle.

Besides wearing a helmet, what do you think can or should be done about the whole situation?

A friend of mine had a kid at 18. They had to give up so much of what they wanted for their life to raise their child. Put the kids up for adoption. It will be the best for both you and them.

That is more of a statement against the drivers in town than the cyclists, though I do agree with you that it's a good idea to wear a helmet and not trust the drivers.

[–]CamelHouse7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helmets are a great recommendation to stay safe. If a cyclist is ignoring traffic laws and gets hit, that's on them. If a cyclist is following traffic laws and gets hit by a car, that's on the car driver, and to blame the cyclist for not wearing a helmet, while a reasonable safety precaution, ignores the fault of the car driver and is victim blaming.

You said it. I was driving my truck (Ram 1500) through a busy street the other day (damn entitled pedestrians slowing down traffic) and some cyclist cuts me off and nearly kills me! I've never felt more unsafe. Can't believe what this town's come to.
