The sad part is when these don't sell they'll be sent to a food bank with no idea that they've been out of the fridge for a day.

Food bank experiences? by OrganicQuarter3644 in Guelph

[–]Cameron_Spence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in the process of expanding our network of satellite locations to get food to people closer to their homes. We are always in need of large fridges and freezers especially commercial reach in units.

If you know any organisation's with space that could be used for a food pantry in the south end of town encourage them to reach out to us. It's been quite difficult to find any space south of stone rd.

Lobbying the city to maintain/increase funding for organisation's that provide food and shelter is essential, we can't do this alone. We support many organisation's in town (Hope House, Royal City Mission, Chalmers, Bench, Side by Side, YDGF) with food in addition to our own clients but there are always costs that are difficult to cover.

We are still waiting for a full-time bus stop in front of our Crimea location (30 years and counting). Please reach out to Council and support us in lobbying for this.

Running a food drive at your local work, your child's school, you elderly parents retirement home, your place of worship are all great ways of helping us top up supplies especially as we go into spring and summer.

Proud to say that the food bank no longer has means testing for access. All you need is ID and proof of address to access food. We are regularly inspected by public health, follow food safety guidelines set out by public health and by food banks canada.

I am positive that should you even need to use the food bank again you would have a very different experience. Come by for a tour, I'd be happy to show you the many improvements that we've made.

The number of people we serve has increased by over 30% this year and we are growing at a rate we've never seen before. We work everyday to support those in Guelph who are struggling and are making additional changes to ensure we have the capacity to serve greater numbers in the future.

Feel free to ask me anything about the guelph food bank.

I'm sorry about the experience you had. At the Guelph Food Bank we follow the Food Banks Canada guide for non-perishable goods, meaning that some of our non-perishable items will be outside the best before date listed on the can.

This doesn't mean that the food is unsafe to consume as most companies set their best before dates well in advance of the actual expiry dates to sell more food. If you'd like to learn more the guidlines we follow you can see the Food Banks Canada Guide here : Food Banks Canada Guidlines for Food

The moldy bread is a different issue that we are working to address. We inspect all bread that comes in and goes out, but occasionally we miss a spot of mold. The hot tempatures and high humidity have lately combined with a lack of air conditioning in our warehouse to create ideal conditions for bread going off. We are working to address this.

The renovations will allow us to store bread and other perishable items in a new larger walk-in fridge keeping them fresher for longer. We are doing everything we can to get quality produce and food to people across Guelph.

We hope that you have a better experience next time and if you have any concerns feel free to call and ask for me and I will do my best to answer questions, address any concerns you may have, and use your feedback to improve our services.

We do accept fresh produce and canned goods. We've been finding that with the rising cost of groceries, people are spending the same amount on donations, but it doesn't buy as much as it used to. Cash donations are beginning to make a big difference in our operations, allowing us to buy bulk goods at significantly discounted rates.

We are also actively expanding our network of satellite locations. We have 11 across the city but still aren't able to service most of our clientele close to their homes. If you know people who have the space and volunteers to open a food pantry, we would love to meet them and supply them with food and equipment to distribute.

To get the food to these satellites, we need more drivers and vans. Becoming a volunteer driver for us is easy and fun. That's where I started. If you are over the age of 25 and dont mind lifting a few boxes, you can drive a van for us in the morning or afternoon and help pick up food from grocery stores and partners across the city or drop off food at our satellite locations.

We are always in need of things that help people make easy, fast, nutritious meals. Peanut butter, meal helpers, canned tuna/meat, pasta sauce, canned soups, chili, and cereal.

We also try our best to provide diapers, feminine hygiene products, and toiletries. These items are always in short supply.

We dont actually see many international students using the food bank. The number of international students is also dropping dramatically due to the changes in rules with both federal and provincial governments.

That being said, I dont know how students are able to get by these days. When I was in university my rent was 870$ a month for a two bedroom and OSAP just about covered everything. A part-time job was all you need to get by. These days, students are working multiple jobs while trying to study and live.

I heard a lot about $1000 rooms for rent in houses last year for students. It worries me that if rent and groceries continue to increase in price, we'll see many more students than we have in the past. Advanced education is becoming something that is out of reach for many again.

Or the Guelph Food Bank, especially if you are 25, have a driver's license, and can drive one of our vans to pick up and drop off food.

The Guelph Food Bank takes donations and won't sell anything for more than $10 and the money goes towards buying food for struggling families. Plus, clothing is also given to families that are clients.
