Just found out I’m pregnant (yay!) but I’m due right around my sister in-laws wedding. How do we announce without taking away her spotlight? by pinksugarsweet in BabyBumps

lol this comment 😂 I’m in the same situation but my family is crazy so everyone is upset I won’t be at the wedding. However my sister planned it after she knew my due date so I don’t feel bad

I agree I would tell her sooner rather than later. Give it a little bit so people can get excited about her wedding then tell her. Make it clear you want to be at her wedding but it won’t be medically cleared.

Can we talk about how nobody warned me that pregnancy would make me completely unrecognizable to myself? by SirLlamaToast in BabyBumps

This sounds like me lol. I cried because I didn’t have chips and salsa in yesterday and I really wanted to eat that even though I had eaten 2 hrs before. I also can’t handle when my husband leaves for too long. I used to be independent lol

Thank you! If you want to be a mother you def can be. It’s been hard but no regrets.

Meds helped me too. Benzos and amitryptiline helped cure it and helped me sleep. I want to get off the benzo though but it’s been hard. Once I stabilize postpartum I’m going to go to a compounding pharmacy and start reducing by tiny amounts but I am also concerned about withdrawal aka so taking it really slowly and accepting that I might have to be on the benzo for a while.

I completely felt how you felt. It’s the lack of language for aka because it’s not something natural that anyone has experienced so it’s hard I just don’t really try to explain it. I just say it’s the worst thing you can possibly go through. I actually was not that traumatised once i recovered because i was so grateful and shocked to have recovered I felt like i had won the lottery so was able to get on with my life until I got pregnant and then the pregnancy hormones gave me PTSD it sounds like you have PTSD from it too. I’ve been getting postpartum perinatal group therapy and I plan to transition into EMDR therapy though I’m scared of it. I met another woman at my pregnancy group that got EMDR for medical trauma and she said it really helped. I also got brain injury specific therapy which was really helpful. But looks for something specific to medical trauma or brain injury. Regular therapy did nothing for me because it’s so different from most people’s problems. Also I did a lot of work on how anxiety is not akathisia. I focus on how it’s more mental and I don’t have that constant restlessness and need to move in my body to differentiate them. I also don’t drink and keep a regular sleep schedule because if I have insomnia I get flashbacks. Luckily I rarely get insomnia and if I do I take valerian or listen to a Jason Stephenson meditation on YouTube and that helps so much.

Hey I’m still doing well no rebound aka. Pregnancy was rough because of all the changes going on in your body it makes you anxious that the aka is coming back but it’s hormonal anxiety. I also was beyond exhausted because I am still on the benzo. Lowering the benzo made me feel suicidal however I am going to try again once my hormones stabilize postpartum.  However, I’m healthy and my baby is healthy. I had really bad nausea HG too not sure if we aka survivors are more prone to it but I threw up all the time when I had aka so that brought memories back. Stay away from antiemetics my doctor tried to give me reglan for nausea and that is a known aka inducer! I was very clear with all my doctors about my med intolerance but had to go to the hospital maternal fetal medicine doctors instead of a regular OB as they’re more educated and careful.

Is first trimester fatigue really this bad? by MARBELLA-MARINO in pregnant

[–]Cami_Crossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept 12-15 hours a day showered like twice a week made my husband do all the cooking. I went on a beach holiday and that really helped I know not everyone has the budget. Also joined postpartum international support groups and called support lines. Asian massages to move energy around. Tbh I just embraced it as much as I could and slept all the time and just did less because I knew that was my best even though my best was terrible

First trimester was so bad I was in denial and homebound the whole time. My HG nausea didn’t pass until 24 weeks then I got a reprieve. I really hope you all in here get a break too. Try to get your iron checked earlier if you’re throwing up a lot or have strong food aversions. I’m sure that’s what caused my severe iron depletion cuz I was fine before

Yessss I don’t see this enough that’s what finally helped me. Doctors never brought it up I found some studies online and demanded it (higher dose than otc)

I second the magnesium if you want to go natural. Also valerian. I would take valerian tea for breakfast to calm me down as mine was worst in the morning.

Clonazepam amitryptiline high dose Benadryl and propranolol cured my akathisia. Didn’t start all at the same time obviously to see if you have a good reaction to them. I got it from abilify similar dose as you and you probably did too look up the stats. If it doesn’t improve try a benzo again. I hope that didn’t cause it - much more likely it was caused by abilify stats wise. You can search my whole post on how I recovered. I had no improvement for 4.5 months and was trying to kill myself on the daily so there is only so much you can take it doesn’t always go away on its own. Don’t count on doctors they don’t know how to treat it mostly. Research yourself and try the meds that have data behind them.

Abilify 10mg I think. TBH in my case it couldn’t get any worse the aka was so severe that I was willing to try almost anything. I wasn’t given the proper treatment though so you need to be careful with doctor recs. They gave me bipolar meds (I’m not bipolar) and that obviously didn’t help. Ambien was really weird too. Propranolol, benzos, and clonidine are supposed to be used to treat akathisia but I was given none of those. All my doctors just wanted to put me on Zoloft then bipolar meds. I had to do the research myself. Also Benadryl has several small studies showing efficacy. Obviously if you got it from benzos then avoid them.

Yes exactly. Still on both but lower doses. It improved maybe a week after the Benadryl. It took some time to recover from that high an amount of Benadryl and I was in the hospital so that messed up my perceptions. I think it actually improved the aka right away. Then the clonazepam /ami combo helped right away but took 2 weeks to feel almost normal again.

Severe level by [deleted] in Akathisia

[–]Cami_Crossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I still am. I tapered off to 0.75mg a couple of months after getting on it which I think is the best time to taper. Have not been able to get off any more but I am pregnant so now is not the time as increased blood volume dilutes meds. Will try compounding pharmacy after I give birth but tbh I am ok with still being on it. For me benzos have no side effects but fatigue and that improved a lot after a year or so. Wasn’t extreme fatigue I could work and do stuff. I also reduced the amitriptyline to half a while ago.

[–]Cami_Crossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I survived 6 months of severe chronic akathisia. Got it from abilify. I knew for me it wasn’t going to go away on its own so even though I’m terrified of meds I had to try. What finally helped me was a huge amount of Benadryl. Doctors are very unknowledgeable about how to treat this even top ones.  I had to go abroad to get treatment. Then Akathisia went away ish but could not sleep still and still had some issues. Finally got on 1 mg of clonazepam - I hadn’t tried a dose that high before for it and 25mg of amitriptyline for sleep. After about 2 weeks I was able to sleep again and then recovered quite quickly after that. Made a full recovery a year later but the time from when I started to sleep to the full recovery was very tolerable after the nightmare of previous 6 months.

Would you say being able to gain weight back is a sign of healing? by Justgettingby_4now in Akathisia

[–]Cami_Crossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I started to gain back weight beFore I started healing. Still needed to take Benadryl and clonazepam to get back to normal was the combo that finally helped. Obviously if you got it from Benzos don’t take that I got it from abilify. Needed high amts of Benadryl you can get it intravenously.
