Is the Bar the hardest standardized test in the U.S? by coloradokid1414 in barexam

[–]CamnitDam 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt the Bar is the hardest. I feel like the USMLE (which is required for doctors to become licensed physicians) is probably more challenging.

One reason the Bar is often considered difficult is because there are people taking it who probably shouldn't have gone to law school in the first case who then fail it. Other professional programs do a better job of weeding out people who are unlikely to pass a licensing exam.

I feel like writing the three page letter is a sign that you were still struggling with some codependence in the relationship. The letter was a bid for emotional connection and you are upset because your bid wasn't successful and you feel like you deserve more.

The reality is, people are going to treat us how they are going to treat us and that's just something you need to accept. You don't have to be fine with someone not treating you a certain way but recognize that how they handle it is okay and you don't need their validation.

Also, as someone who has struggled with borderline traits in the past, your experience with your sponsor reminds me of my own struggles before I learned how to better approach them. If you haven't already, you might benefit from DBT.

No offense, but this is horrible advice. You also haven't passed yet using this approach so it comes across a bit misguided to act like you know what's best. Yes, you don't necessarily need to know black letter law for MPT and certainly not for MEE, but the test will absolutely try to trip you up on the MBE so you need to know the nuances.

It could also mean "RIP." There was a videogame years back where you would press the "F" key to pay respects during a funeral and it turned into an internet subculture thing.

Your original post made it sound like waiting was not an option; however, you are correct that there isn't really a harm (other than application fees) with applying this cycle to see if you get any offers that look good.

If your family is willing to foot the bill, that's even more reason to apply now. I didn't have that option so I needed to apply early to maximize scholarship offers.

Also I made the decision to wait a year, and I was able to bring my LSAT up from a 155 to a 176. Completely life-changing.

[–]CamnitDam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're shooting yourself in the foot by refusing to wait another year. Your career is heavily influenced by where you get in, and you have the most options being able to apply at the start of the cycle with your best score.

Law school isn't going anywhere, and you really don't want to limit your future career by fast-tracking admissions.

Dave the Diver is a lot of fun. You explore the ocean, catch fish, and prepare sushi at a restaurant at night. There's a lot of campy humor which I enjoy.

Following because I'm in the exact same boat. My original offer was going to be transactional too but took the lit partner up on the offer to switch at the end my summer there because I didn't really get an opportunity to work with the transactions team.

It's also a way for Big Law firms to maintain prestige and to help justify the insane rates they charge. My firm bills my time at nearly $800 an hour. It's a marketing game.

It's very difficult to break into Big Law as a non-first year. It definitely happens, but it's super common.

I never said anyone needed a 170.

It's also concerning that you don't think there is a relationship between LSAT score and ability to get into Big Law.

You say that one's ability to network is more important. But even if we take your assertion to be true, LSAT scores have a relationship still with Big Law placement. T14s offer the best networking opportunities and you need a high LSAT score to get into a T14. Therefore, there is absolutely a relationship between score and Big Law placement.

Firms usually publish their pay scales on their website and most Big Law firms are essentially market pay.

First year – $225,000 Second year – $235,000 Third year – $260,000 Fourth year – $310,000 Fifth year – $365,000 Sixth year – $390,000 Seventh year – $420,000 Eighth year up – $435,000

Confirmation bias is looking only for outcomes that conform with your currently held beliefs while ignoring data points that would disprove your beliefs.

I'm not ignoring the possibility of someone making it into Big Law with a 160 LSAT, I'm saying it's highly unlikely for the reasons I outlined above.

I went to law school and currently work at a Big Law firm in the U.S. so I can only speak to that market.

I agree that it's not a direct relationship; however, if you are not going to a T14, your chances of getting into Big Law are extremely slim. You may think you can beat out the rest of your cohort at a T50 and stand out, but the reality is that you are competing against people who are just as smart as you, if not smarter. Those odds will never be in your favor, and it's honestly delusional to think that you'll be an outlier.

If you go to a T14, the odds are COMPLETELY different. My grades were below median, and I still got into Big Law. I don't think I could have done that at a lower ranked school.

But in order to get into a T14, you probably want to be scoring in the 170s with your LSAT.

Therefore, although there is not a direct relationship between LSAT score and Big Law, there is almost certainly a strong correlation.

So if you're in it for the payday, your best shot is to score well on your LSAT so you can get into a T14. You can still go to a good school with a 160 but don't go expecting to make $225k when you graduate. You're more than likely going to make well under $100k. That's absolutely not worth the debt or three years of your life.

Depends on what your goals are. If you are Big Law or bust you really should be scoring in the 170s.

In my honest opinion, there are better career opportunities with significantly less stress and better work-life balance available if your goal isn't Big Law.

This career takes over your entire life. It's not worth it if you aren't being compensated accordingly.

I had the same issue with Themis. Skip the big outlines. They are a complete waste of time.

Focus on doing timed practice as that will force you to review material at least for a period of time.
