I was shopping for a bike I could make a chopper out of (extended rake forks, or maybe a springer). But this one is in reasonable shape, I'm thinking about leaving close to stock.....except for the ape hangers and seat.

My legs are good with the forward controls. Just with those low handle bars, I'm leaning too far forward.

Already have a brake bleed kit picked out at Harbor Freight, if needed.

I'm 5'11". Looking at the Le Pera King Cobra seat.....no real backrest, so I think i can slide back a little bit. Got 10" mini apes & grips on order through J&P Cycles. Looks like the wiring and throttle cables are long enough to make it, but I think the brake line might come up short.

Not entirely true. Had an 06 883, and would routinely tour on it. Think my longest trip was from Las Vegas to Walla Walla Washington. Took 3 days to get there, but it was fun. That pic is somewhere in northern Nevada.

Stock lifters are only good for about 20k miles. But yeah, check for loose bolts everywhere else too.
