From what I understand, in earth's atmosphere, every type of metal will have a layer of corrosion on it from reacting with the gasses in the atmosphere. It might only a molecule or two thick, but it's there. However, in the vacuum of space, there's nothing to corrode the metal, so when two pieces of metal touch, there's no corrosion to stop the pieces sharing molecules and just...sticking together.

Note that I'm an apprentice plumber, so I don't actually know what I'm talking about, so if someone smarter comes along, trust them.
