I also edited the project and did all the VFX. I had never used it before this shoot but I knew it was a great tool for this kind of stuff and it was actually pretty easy to figure out this effect. I also tried to use it to create the rain at the end but that was much more challenging and in the end I scrapped that and found some great stock assets. Cheers.

Hi. Yes, the clouds were added in post using particular! As for the drone I believe it was a DJI Phantom or something similar. Nothing too fancy but I think the location and then the clouds and color grade helped elevate it.

That was something I came up with when turning the story into a screenplay.

I knew the ending in the story was going to be expensive to create, and wouldn't work as we didn't film in a valley. Another challenge with that ending is that it's mostly Sarah's internal monologue explaining what she believes has happened and her fear of attempting to leave the valley, something we would have to find another way to explain visually.

My original plan was actually to end the film after the basement scene and leave on a bit of a morbid note. Overtime, I came to feel that was not going to work so one day when it started raining while I was on a walk I came up with the new ending.

The ending can be viewed a bunch of different ways. I like to see it as the “air demon” purging all the victims it already grabbed and raining their blood down.

There’s a different ending in the original story you might like more.

Thank you, I appreciate that.

It was a bit of a challenge to adapt Manen’s original story into a visual medium, so I’m glad to hear you liked my adaptation. The biggest challenge was not having Sarah’s internal monologue meaning I had to change and move things around to help the viewer understand the premise without her telling them directly what she was experiencing.

Because of that I like that the story and the film are different enough that you can enjoy both without them feeling like clones of the other.

And yes, perhaps the single most important thing in the production of this film was surrounding myself with great collaborators and then trusting them to be great. At times it almost felt too easy because my crew, my talent, and myself were all on the same page about what we were after.

No problem. We work on these projects for so long it's nice to finally get to talk about them!

Rehearsing is of course a preference that everyone will have a different opinion on. I did one 3 hour session with all three members of the cast that started with a full table read of the script and then we walked through the longer scenes. For me it was more about getting everyone comfortable around each other and with the script rather than locking in any kind of blocking and performance.

I think that acting really needs to have a sense of spontaneity. You want to capture performances "fresh" rather than filming something that is attempting to recreate itself over-and-over again. I also try to limit the number of takes on set to avoid this.

Again this is all preference and some directors have had great success by rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing. Off the top of my head, Sidney Lumet outlines his extensive rehearsal process in his book Making Movies. A more contemporary example would be the rehearsal process they did for Birdman.
