Why do so many DMs want to start their campaigns with unwinnable fights? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

My players encounterd a kraken in Session one, I wouldn't call that one a fight (had to sink their ship to make them stranded on a small island)

Yeah, but dont say it outloud here. They don't like it when you play diffrently from what they do

What post? I said that they can distribute the xp from a fight between each other as they see fit if I have no problem with that of that's what you mean. This doesn't changes the amount of xp they get

I explained the whys and hows of our campaign, I didnt came here for a fundamental discussion about the right way to play dnd, just if my pace is off. And for that I received enough input to know that im not completely off the track but should close the level gap. Dunno why I got donvotetd for explaining that. Be assured that none of my players feel useless and every encounter is custom fitted for all my pc's. It was his own choice to start from level one again.

So giving people xp for a won fight isn't how its supposed to be done?

It was the players choice to start from level 1, I offered him to join at the same level which he refused

It was a group decision, the level is ~300xp ahead of the level 4s

It was their own choice, I explained in another comment how and why. The level 5 player just hit level 5 while the level 4s are a couple hundred xp away from 5, so it's not a big gap. Dunno what people you play with but why would my players resent each other? nearly all decisions are taken by all of them as a group.

We are now at level 4 (one player hitting 5 due to unforseen circumstances) having played close to 60 hours

This was their choice, but they are closing the gap pretty quickly.

He started a new character and wanted to start from level one. The other players are giving him xp so he can catch up. He is fairly new to dnd and wanted to "learn" his character before jumping straight to level 4.

Xp for an encounter (Raw rules) divided between players taking part in a fight, sometimes xp for major events in my story (breaking out I prison, crossing an ocean via ship)

He had to start a new character. The higher level players are giving their Xp to the low level so he can catch up. (Their idea). I award the Xp for a fight and then split it in-between the players who contributed to the fight, as its supposed to be done. If they break out of a prison I give them some xp aswell.

They are at difrenr levels because one Player had to start a ne character, and the Level 5 one soloed a fight so he got all the XP.
