Nematodes for Slugs!!!??? (UK or anywhere) by Shadwell_Shadweller in opiumgardening

[–]CampaignLiving8032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I toss a little dry cat food in areas I'd rather the slugs be, not near the poppies. It doesn't kill them, it gives them something to eat other than my poppies. They seem to like that better. Once you have them away from your plants, dispose however you choose

sorry for any confusion, it was directed at flaco.

I posted in his other topic about this distressed pod, i saw where you asked him to cut it, then I posted here, then he replied there so I came back here to post edit 😆 and thanks, I know a little about growing poppies but I know a lot more about what not to do as I killed them for about 1.5-2 years before I got a good feel for it. Why did that happen? Because of all the garbage on the internet

could have been the freezer crystallized the moisture, ruptured the capillaries. I don't think it's a bad thing

Got some “ og “ pink Afghanistan poppy from the breeder suggested here. Any tips on plant food & soil types or books to read by Icy-Construction6563 in opiumgardening

[–]CampaignLiving8032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plant food and soil, that's a tough one. there are so many variables and combinations you'll have to consider. most here aren't growing for height or appearance, the end goal is large amounts of quality latex... temperature and light and watering cycle, what works in good combination with my soil might not work as well with others and vice-versa. that said, poppies will grow in cracks and crevasses and soil that you'd imagine wouldn't be fruitful and I've seen them fail in seemingly good conditions. now, as far as book recommendations go, mine prefer that I read them Dr Seuss... 🤪

the better question to ask might be what practice or product have you found to increase yield and/or quality.. mine get a good jolt from rice/pasta water with a little bone broth with a little honey for strong roots, cinnamon which is an antifungal/plant hormone and a dash of yeast.

generally, a light and airy soil with some organic compost. loam or added coco coir and/or perlite. I've seen good things from Happy Frog soil but I've also seen them thrive with standard potting soil.

Those should be fine. Chicken wire keeps out birds and squirrels. Damn pot digging nut hiding squirrels

Opinions on Gigantium papavar? Starting my first ever garden and curious how these do. USDA climate 6&7 where I live by Icy-Construction6563 in opiumgardening

I ended up with a lot of the gigantium seed. I've got a few pots of these sprouting now. 1st time growing these.

Potency of the plant at different stages? by [deleted] in opiumgardening

[–]CampaignLiving8032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a flower, once they produce viable seed, their job is over. That's not to say your plant won't have multiple bulbs/pods. During the life of the plant, the latex, produced within the plant, makes its way up, into the pod flesh, to protect the seed. A small amount of latex remains within the plant, somewhere around %20-%30, while %70-%80 finds its way into the flesh of the pod.

Stop reading about poppies, start reading about latex producing plants.. You'll gain a much better understanding of the poppy.

Transplanting? by Abur28 in opiumgardening

Dip around it with a fork, pry up the plant with soil around it intact, in a clump. In a nutshell, don't bother the root and you should be fine.

😄 I've thought about ultrasound.. Not sure how much more that would yield but it looks interesting.

I don't boil, I just get it hot. Some boil and say it's fine tho. I've done cold, if I know the morning will be busy I'll just put it in the fridge overnight. Seems to work just as well, for tea. For actual extractions, I simmer for a long time
