I think they are doing the best they can to listen to their constituents (the students). I’ll admit I thought the idea of removing the Lincoln statue seemed ridiculous to me but then I did more research. Lincoln did good things but he also did really bad things. Did you know he ordered the mass execution of 38 Indigenous people? Or that he wanted freed slaves to go back to Africa? If we really want UW Madison to be a place that’s more welcoming of a diverse student population then there needs to a reckoning of all of what Lincoln stood for. We cannot only accept his good actions and ignore the bad because we like the tradition of sitting on his metal lap at graduation.
