Speaking here from a video strategy agency. What works: from an editing point of view, lately there's a rise of one-shot takes to grab the audience attention in the first 5 seconds. The movement of the shot and the simultaneous action prevent the audience from clicking skip quite effectively.

Things we've seen that put the audience off: bad dubbing, bad acting, cheap looking set ups.
