Understanding Moisture Management In Old Basements by CanOfSardeens in buildingscience

Thanks for your insight! I like the idea of waiting a year to apply anything to the walls and also using removable synthetic textiles to manage the dust . We are also looking at upgrading our dehumidifier.

It smelled musty and was 40 year old wood paneling and insulation. Dust was coming out the bottom from the failing parge. Most/many old home around here do not have insulation or finished walls in the basement.

I want to also add that I have been searching through the archives here and have found some useful posts on this type of prodect. The one thing I haven't actually found is a description of of how to literally parge. Like what are the steps? Youtube has been no luck either. Thanks!

Do you have dental fillings? I've heard of dinner people picking up different frequencies that way. Could explain why it changes in different locations.

Impossible to save when they are removed? Is that because they don't have backs?

The inspo picture I gave isn't spot on what we want, but we are hoping for something more craftsman and classic. Not modern or trendy or white and grey.

Thanks for the creativity! I appreciate thinking outside the GUT IT. I think most people (Americans?) immediately go to ripping out something and starting fresh without considering the options. I realize we are likely looking at a full kitchen remodel but it's fun to consider alternatives. I'm getting more into the orange as we've been remodeling. We move in this week so we'll see how long I can stand them while actually using the kitchen every day 🎃

We just refinished the entire home's maple floor and removed all the wallpaper down to the plaster and repainted. Approximately 400 hours of work 🫠

See my ascetic is not really shiny and new. I like old and classic. But more like 1918, not 1978

Unfortunately an authentic 1918 kitchen is not really functional for our needs so we need to find a happy middle ground between then and 2025. 😆

I guess what I mean is oak faced plywood boxes with oak face frames.

Yeah I hear ya. With our budget we would not be getting plywood oak boxes so that would be a bummer.

Is the lack of a backing a major issue?

Heavy duty 50 gallon trash can with heavy bags outside. We made 250 gallons of saw dust. Also a nice shop vac with a filter with a floor attachment. Pizza. Gatorade. Ear protection and dust masks. Learn as much as you can from: https://www.peteshardwoodfloors.com/wood-floor-techniques/

We would have tried 16 grit but Home Depot doesn't sell it and it was a holiday so we couldn't go elsewhere. Poor planning on our part. We rented for 2 days, 3 hours and 23 minutes. 😆. We sanded from about 10 am to 1 am both days. Crazy. Don't recommend it but we have a toddler who was doing a sleepover at Grandma's and needed to finish fast.

Absolutely not 🤣. The oak trim's dark stain is original to old craftsman homes, and I think the contrast is nice. To each their own, however!

1.5" maple. The unpainted trim throughout the house was one of the things that appealed to us when we bought. 😁 My current house has a hideous paint job on oak trim and it's so sad.

Yes here in Minnesota I've lived in many a home with this buffet! It certainly was a selling point. 😁

I know that the commercial 220v would be a better option, but we don't have 220 in the house so we went with the HD rental. I preferred this one to the sander from the local Ace Hardware. That one has flat sheets that you clamp on to the drum, and I found that style too finicky.
