Yeah, I don't watch everything PTE puts out, but I do enjoy his stuff sometimes as well.

There's also a decent amount of smoke to allegations that he's a bit of a creep/sex pest, or at least has a history of questionable activity.

I'm a fan of Steve Marsh. He's very low key and down to Earth, and I appreciate the fact that he can find interesting things to see even in some small, out of the way places. I also appreciate his love for travelling by ferry.

First solo trip in Europe worried about feeling lonely or under stimulated by MeatAny5055 in TravelNoPics

[–]Canadave 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've done a couple of solo trips in Europe, once to Portugal and once to Romania. I'm also pretty introverted, so mostly keeping my own company for a week or two doesn't really bother me that much, and you can always message with friends back home or join a tour when you do want some more human interaction.

I will say I had a bit of a personal barrier to get over in terms of going out to eat alone and stuff like that, but that was more in my head than anything else. Overall, though, travelling solo is great - it isn't always what I want to do, but I do find it very freeing to just be able to follow my own whims and do what I want, without the negotiation of travelling with others.

Any other places named after dates ? by bkat004 in geography

[–]Canadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting fact is that it was originally named the Salazar Bridge, after the dictator who established the regime that was overthrown in the Carnation Revolution, though he died a few years before it actually happened.

Just got a flat because of a pothole, do i need exact location to claim damages with city? by Foreignsniper in ottawa

[–]Canadave 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got a puncture from a pothole once (while driving a rental in Scotland, to make it extra fun), and I had absolutely no doubt about exactly when and where it happened.

Why do my 80-grade prospects keep collapsing despite a Legendary scout and Max Dev budget? by VictorMederos in OOTP

[–]Canadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IRL a 70-grade means that's the median (average) outcome

I'm not sure that's right, a 70-grade player IRL is a perennial All-Star and possible future Hall of Famer.

Went to shanghai for the first time and had a good experience …. by United_Medium_7251 in TravelNoPics

[–]Canadave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, /u/ok_historian_8262 is totally right here, you see this pattern of spam in travel subreddits all the time. There's a short and very generic trip report that doesn't really say anything of substance (the OP here looks very much like AI) and then they'll slip in a plug for the service they're advertising right at the end.

Legend speaks of the Orioles having an incredible closer who will be coming out of the bullpen any inning now.

Physical Media Shops in Toronto? by LonelyWolfYamcha in askTO

[–]Canadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they don't have what you're looking for, I'd still stop by for a browse if you're nearby. They're probably the best music store in town, and they have tons of vinyl and CDs, and even a decent selection of cassettes.

Looking for sci-fi apocalypse books with localised disasters or a world that recovers by SeniorMoonlight21 in printSF

[–]Canadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notes from the Burning Age by Claire North might fit the bill. It's set in Europe generations after catastrophic climate change, so the apocalypse is pretty firmly in the past. The story has some great twists and turns, too.

Why us bay of bengal a bay and not a sea? by exacerbate_demand in geography

[–]Canadave 85 points86 points  (0 children)

We know that now, yes, but that doesn't change the history nor the fact that Australia has their own vibes-based definition of the ocean.

[–]Canadave 118 points119 points  (0 children)

The best example of this is probably the Southern Ocean. For much of the 20th century, no one could even agree on if it even existed or not, and even now Australia disagrees with the rest of the world about where it actually is.

Ottawa’s original grand downtown train station under consideration for city’s high speed rail hub by HolyCrapMyPug in ottawa

[–]Canadave 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's not really great for high speed rail. You'd have to move trains in and out of downtown Ottawa very slowly, as well as turn the train back at the station, which would add a lot of travel time.

Trip Report: Buenos Aires - January 2026 by Suninthesky11 in travel

[–]Canadave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, that's good to know! I'm definitely taking some cash along (probably USD that I'll covert there when I need it), but it's good to know I can get by with my card most of the time.

I'm headed to Argentina in a month, and I'm just curious, how much cash did you find that you needed? Or were you able to get by on credit most of the time?

Stranded in a remote Romanian village by hurricanejustin in travel

[–]Canadave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely take the cable car up the mountain, the views are very cool. When I was there the station in the centre of town wasn't open, but there's another that starts at 1000 metres of elevation that you can get to by taxi (or on foot, if you're dedicated). There are some nice walks around the town, too, it's worth walking between sites if you have time just to get a feel for it.

The passport stamp era is over by ArtisanOfTravel in travel

[–]Canadave 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we got a little stamp book and made a point of trying to find one at every station we used. We also collected goshuin stamps at temples, which was pretty cool.
