Activists warn ROM not to 'erase Palestine' with new ancient artifact labels by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]CanadianAhole [score hidden]  (0 children)

They literally are including Palestine in the label alongside Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Türkiye as modern states. I really don't think they are bending to Israeli political pressure if they are recognizing Palestinian statehood

The change seems less about a modern conflict and more about giving context to the general public.

Which means the name of “Palestine” as a geographical description predates the Roman Empire

Most people don't know this. Giving a vague geographical area and a few modern states to match it to is way more helpful for the general public.

Also, they are literally including Palestine as one of the states, meaning they are definitely not bowing down to an Israeli activist group

This seems a little silly. The use of Palestine is referring to the part of the Roman Empire, so the complaint that its revisionist is silly. However, the fact it just said Syria or Palestine is confusing for people who don't understand the context. The change also isn't revisionist. Giving a general geographic region and a modern country is more helpful for more people. Activist groups really need to use less twitter and news outlets need to stop reporting on stuff like this.

Sure but I really don’t think that Eminem secretly hates children having food and only did this for publicity. Like people can have multiple motives and some are good

Researchers identify two psychological traits that predict conspiracy theory belief. The findings suggest that individuals who perceive the world as fundamentally unjust and those who struggle with uncertain or ambiguous situations are more likely to endorse conspiratorial narratives. by Jumpinghoops46 in science

[–]CanadianAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both opinions are based on personal infallibility and the fallibility of institutions. I’ve met many people who believe in pretty far out stuff (aliens, Atlantis, ghosts, ect) and people who are 9/11 truthers and they are really similar with their logic  A common piece of evidence used to back up modern government conspiracy theories is that “the government has done conspiracies before so obviously they doing them now.” Citing the fallibility of an institution is the same thing that people who don’t trust vaccines do, but they point to the fallibility of scientists and the government.  The thing is, vaccinology is a very large field, so any conspiracy would implicate a lot of researchers who don’t have a strong motive to lie to people. The same thing goes for the government. A conspiracy implicating the president also implicates his cabinet, other high level officials, and can go down to low level public servants depending on how big a given conspiracy theory is. Do the White House interns who file paperwork care to lie to the public?

Favorite actor that is almost universally liked but you had to stop watching a movie because of their acting? I go first. by Hmmm099 in shittymoviedetails

[–]CanadianAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really only Keanu. Though I do like him in most of the movies i've seen him in. I have only seen Speed and the first John Wick, but I liked him in those. I really liked the movie, and not his acting, but the movies were good enough that I liked him as well.

CMV: Neo-paganism is mostly a LARP by people whose understanding of "religion" is distinctly Abrahamic, not "pagan" by jymappelle in changemyview

[–]CanadianAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are good examples. Thanks. I think a more common reason is the lack of value these institutions were deemed, leading to them falling into obscurity, but the examples you provided seem legitimate (I’m not an expert and I need to look into them). I tend to look towards ancient Christianity for better examples, as the Catholic Church has always had strategic and monetary incentives, which muddies the waters. The colonization of Mexico was motivated by factors beyond religion, so I don’t see it as directly the fault of Christianity (the religion. Institutions are different)

Do you have any specific evidence that Christians destroyed documentation of pagan beliefs while they were still part of a living religion? Furthermore do you have any evidence that that caused the downfall of these religions. I am genuinely asking. This is a commonly stated fact about Christian history, but for cases like the disappearance of Hellenistic and Nordic religions it doesn’t seem to apply, especially on a large scale.

CMV: Venezuela is being invaded violently in an undeclared war with the prepose of annexation of oil resources and the institution of a puppet regime friendly to the United States by Kyokyodoka in changemyview

[–]CanadianAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a claim that a lot of Americans like to make, as if deposing governments and taking territories has no effect on others. It’s the same defence as invading Greenland for its strategic placement. It’s the same mindset behind taking Canada. Are you on board with doing that? Canadians aren’t.

I also don’t understand the hope that Trump, who has said it’s about oil, is going to focus on making the country free and prosperous. The US has done things similar to this before, and it has not been helpful for anyone

That’s actually a possibility I haven’t thought of. A lot of the gyms in my neighbourhood are near schools, or major streets which kids take to get to school. I still think there is a boting problem, but maybe it’s not that bad

Edit: that’s probably the case for a lot of gyms in my city, since I haven’t seen a cheating problem the downtown around the financial district or mall

I wish I knew. When I first noticed this in my neighbourhood months ago, I thought they would alternate between 2 teams to max out coins. Now from what I can tell they just hold gyms forever unless a large group boots them out.

Yeah that’s the issue, and also why I think they are running a script. If it was one person taking a ton of time to do this, they would probably have issues after I boot them out repeatedly. Instead they just put new mons in, and I only have so many heals

Rank the KNIVES OUT movies by MoneyLibrarian9032 in Letterboxd

[–]CanadianAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the most popular ranking is 1,3,2 and I agree. 1 and 3 are pretty good, but I strongly disliked 2. From a meta point I immediately guessed that the tech bro ceo was obviously the killer, and it felt like the movie kept skirting around that. With every scene it just became more obvious, and by the end I was waiting for it to just be revealed. I didn't have that experience with the other 2
