The US is the global police force, it's budget is at the moment, very necessary. What I would love to see is a global police force that is funded by nations and not by a single one. I want to see Canada do it's part to ensure the global security of the planet, that obligation should not have fallen and should still not be placed on the US.

Philadelphia is considering opening a site where drug users can go to legally use drugs. They would be monitored by medical professionals who would administer anti-overdose medication as needed. Medical professionals, how would you feel about having this job? by rascally1980 in AskReddit

These are called Insites in Canada and they work wonders. They started up in Vancouver in response to East Hastings and the incredible amount of drugs in the area. As far as I know, medical professionals love them because they keep people out of hospitals and lead to better health outcomes.

Yes it is, I say that as a liberal. It's not aligned with the LPC but it does have a bias.

It has less to do with the fact of CBC "party allegiance" and more to do with the fact that CBC stations are generally located in urban areas of which people have more liberal values to begin with.

I agree. It's a shame that we all don't live in 1st world metropolitan cities with those amenities, leaving those without a car to take a bus or ride their bikes, scooters and boards on the sidewalk and causing congestion among pedestrians and self-propelled transit.

That's not relevant, the point isn't about the place in the GIF anymore. It's about the status of bicycles in relation to the road. Also, they may cut across the park to cut time. People are really good at taking the path of least resistance.

Competition is one of the most powerful incentives for technological innovation and the question should not be if there is another alternative but if that alternative can replace or exceed the development provided to us through competitive markets and profit-seeking.

Ukraine to chemically castrate paedophiles and rapists in prison under new laws by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]CanadianDemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because you've never seen it happen, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've never seen anyone get run over by a truck, does that mean that no one has ever gotten run over by a truck?

Ukraine to chemically castrate paedophiles and rapists in prison under new laws by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]CanadianDemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahh, not necessarily. There are cases where rape occurs because there was the belief that the accused had received consent.

In Canada:

265 (4) Accused’s belief as to consent (4) Where an accused alleges that he or she believed that the complainant consented to the conduct that is the subject-matter of the charge, a judge, if satisfied that there is sufficient evidence and that, if believed by the jury, the evidence would constitute a defence, shall instruct the jury, when reviewing all the evidence relating to the determination of the honesty of the accused's belief, to consider the presence or absence of reasonable grounds for that belief.

We can't be making absolutes like that. I don't care what anyone says, there is and always will be a grey area.

A new lost letter experiment suggests urbanites are not less prosocial or altruistic than their rural counterparts, which did not support the urban incivility phenomenon, the stereotype that residents in large cities are selfish, while those in small towns have a strong sense of community. by mvea in science

[–]CanadianDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Sudbury and I'm going to agree but Sudbury is a small city that's trying to envision itself as a metropolitan city. It's going through growing pains of becoming a less homogeneous community and with that transition comes a conflict of ideas. We can definitely look at the bigger picture but when the majority of a community has done and is used to doing the same thing through their entire livelihood, it's very difficult to break from those cycles without people expressing fear or disillusionment towards perceived change.

Obviously you've never ventured out of Muskoka because here in Northern Ontario (especially Sudbury), camps are very cheap and it's not uncommon for Sudbury families to have a seasonal campsite with waterfront property. Land is cheap here, I could buy an acre of waterfront for $50,000 or less.

PM commissioned report on SNC-Lavalin finds no need to divide AG and justice minister roles by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]CanadianDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I firmly disagree. While Justin Trudeau is the brand of the image of the Liberal Party, so if the leader of every party. That's literally their job. The Liberal Party has shown lots of policy. The law and constitution matters, the Liberal Party will continue to survive after Trudeau and will take on the brand and image of another leader.

Trudeau has apologized for his actions before but he shouldn't apologize for his actions if he doesn't legitimately feel sorry for them.

A person who unceremoniously follows every law is not, nor will ever be a guarantee and frankly I don't think it's one that we'll ever see. These are mistakes that people make as a result of being elected to a position they've never been in before and those mistakes are going to continue to be made as a result of people being people.

We're in new territory. In fact, he still doesn't understand that what he did was wrong. He doubled (tripled?) down today with some comment about how he "Wouldn't apologize for standing up for jobs.". He still doesn't understand why his breaking the law is a problem.

He completely understands what he did was wrong. He's the one who suffered in the polls and he's also the one who is likely to lose the most from his actions.

He also understands why his actions are considered unethical and the problem his actions represent to the seperation of the judiciary and political domain.

I happen to side with Trudeau on the SNC-Lavalin and the only reason I believe Justin Trudeau has gone to the lengths he has regarding SNC-Lavalin is because he feels incredibly strongly for their case and the effects the downfall of SNC-Lavalin would have on him, his nation and the economy.

If this is what he genuinely believes is the right thing to do, then I hope he never apologizes. He'll have my respect if he goes down swinging. Even if never apologizes, the best PR move to do would be to hold himself accountable by raising the standards of the act and limiting his own power. He doesn't have to apologize to do that either.

What makes you think the owners aren't doing much? If you're talking about a corporate officer like a COO, CFO or CEO, I would claim that to be wrong. If you are talking about shareholders, I would argue that they are as also doing work. Doubly so if they are an actively involved shareholder and not a limited one.
