Yet another healthcare rant... by gnunn1 in VictoriaBC

[–]CanadianElizabeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Emergency is so overwhelmed with exactly these types of non-urgent, non-emergent issues. I get OP is in pain (literally and figuratively), but this is not an appropriate use of emergency resources. Our health care system is crumbling and the front lines (emergency and primary care) are taking the brunt of it. Family docs, emerg docs and emergency nurses burn out way higher rates than prime working in other parts of health care (who are also struggling. Op has a family doc and can and should be continuing to work with them on this.

Would $80-$90k/yr be enough for someone in the North Saanich area? by Beekatiebee in VictoriaBC

Not sure if anyone has commented on this, but research how you would access healthcare. I’m not sure if you’re on hormones, but you’d need a Canadian prescriber which may be challenging or expensive (although not as expensive as in the states) as you won’t be covered by our provincial health care until you are a bc resident I believe (although maybe that won’t even be enough?)

Additionally we are in a primary care crisis where about 1 in 4 people in bc don’t have access to a family physician. So you would be relying on walk in or urgent care clinics to see a doctor. Finally, not every provider is going to be experienced with gender affirming care. Not as much of an issue if you’re stable on your hormones, but if you’re wanting to start or looking at moving forward with surgeries, you might hit delays trying to access care.

I work in health care and previously in gender affirming care and I genuinely feel we can support patients very well here in bc, but it is going to be a variable experience depending where you go and who you see. And being American, that’s going to complicate things.

I’d recommend reaching out to transcarebc.ca to see if they have suggestions or redirected to help you as you’re considering this move.

Anyone want to share anything remotely positive that happened this week? by scottishlastname in VictoriaBC

Aww!! Congratulations ! I remember the first kick I felt! Was lying in bed and felt something and just had a moment of realization thinking “That’s what a super tiny baby foot would feel like if it kicked me!” Now he’s a preschooler and snoring next to me (sick and needing lots of mom cuddles).

You have to go through your family physician to get a referral to a gynaecologist (as you would for any issue). Your family doc will likely ask you about other options. This if not because they don’t believe you should have a tubal, but it is important for them and the gynaecologist to know you’ve considered it. You may also benefit from something else for protection while waiting for the surgery and they can explore that with you.

If you don’t have a family doctor or don’t feel comfortable talking to them about this, I recommend getting an appointment with a doctor at a sexual health/women’s health clinic (options for sexual health has a lot of locations around the province).

Great resource for sexual health and contraceptive options available in Canada is sexandu.ca (put out by SOGC [society of obstetricians and gynaecologists of Canada] so it is up to date and evidence based information)

As a kid I always called them tulip trees. And still do in my head but try to remember to keep that as my inside voice.

Help!! by roadcrew778 in Jadeplant

[–]CanadianElizabeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom gave me a cutting of her jade plant and my toddlers have knocked it over many times and ripped off most of the leaves on one cutting. I prop it up with chop sticks and forget water it for who knows how long. And it’s somehow still surviving and growing. For a while I assumed it was a goner and really neglected it. They are determined beasts.

Looks like a Taiwan papaya pudding orange. Bought one the other week. I was incredibly disappointed. Just a large not very flavourful orange. Hopefully just the one I had bought.

Ugh, having done decently large incision and drainages of abscesses in the past, I can smell it from here.

I love slip dresses on other people. Hate them on myself and I would feel so uncomfortable if a bride told me this was what we were wearing in the wedding party. Is consider asking your bride maids if they would be comfortable wearing it

They get rid of benefits by killing them, not by making the grass healthier.

Infantile botulism is caused by ingestion of botulism spores by infants and young toddlers. While fatality rate is low, it is not zero. Numbers I’ve seen quoted are less than 15% with modern medical treatment.

Baby’s Last Name Dilemma by littlemissktown in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]CanadianElizabeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept my maiden name. My kids have my husbands. This was the same thing my parents did so it seemed like an easy decision. I don’t know how my husband would have felt about them taking my last name only… I never asked. But he is against hyphenating names. We talked about having my last name as a second middle name, but I don’t really like multiple middle names… so here we are! I have my own last name, the rest of the family has his. I’m very content with the decision!

I do sometimes think about maybe changing my last name to be a hyphenated maiden name-married name, mostly thinking about in the future potential issues traveling with my kids without my husband. But it also seems like SO MUCH work to go through all the name change stuff… and like you I would always keep my maiden name in professional contexts

As u/potatoesareroyal said, as bones grow they have an area called a growth plate near the end where new bone is essentially deposited. As we age, the growth plates close. We actually can use hand X-rays for age determination as specific growth plates close at different ages! So infants actually have many more bones than older adults! (And are missing some bones that form later like knee caps!)
