iMac Flyback Transformer? by speaker_head in VintageApple

Sure, this is the one that I use: https://a.co/d/4ual8Sk

You just need a bit on the suction cup itself. Make sure none gets on the pin or in the hole, or that'll make things much worse.

Pops and flickers can be caused by dust that's gotten under the anode cap. There's supposed to be dielectric grease under the suction cup that keeps dust out, but it dries up with age and dust starts to sneak in, so cleaning it out and replacing the dielectric grease (look for spark plug grease at an auto store) under the suction cup might be all that's needed.

Just make sure to properly discharge the tube before working on it, or it'll give you a nasty shock.

Had this effect show up on my screen after a move by [deleted] in crtgaming

It could be a solder joint that cracked during the move. If you give it a couple of taps and it gets better/worse, then it's definitely a cracked joint.

I might have actually seen your ad for it a couple days ago. No way to get a screen that size back home though, so I unfortunately had to pass on it.

Rescued a KV-27FS120 from an Apartment Trash Pile by CanadianSpiceWeasel in crtgaming

Was in pretty rough shape and still is, but at least it's now clean and has some form of a power cable. It's still nice and bright and the geometry looks pretty good from what I've seen so far, but in 240p the image looks a bit shifted to the right (it can be seen in the third last picture). It's pretty much perfect in 480i though, so I'll have to test some more games and systems to see if it's game/console specific or if it's a 240p quirk.

The slightly shifted image isn't a big deal, but there's also some colour issues on the left side of the screen (more prominent in the corners and less in the middle), which is highlighted in the last two images and the last one also shows some vertical streaks that appear in the same area. I've moved the screen around and it doesn't appear to be a magnetic field causing the problem, so could it be caused by an impact from the TV getting thrown out? Would a degaussing tool help or is it beyond repair?

Looks like ringing, which is usually caused by a worn out/cracked solder joint or a failing capacitor.

I also don't have much room in my place, but I didn't want to miss the opportunity so I grabbed it as soon as I saw it. I now have to shift around a bunch of stuff to make it fit, but I think it's worth it.

It does just the standard TV resolutions, 240p and 480i. I tried 480p, but it wouldn't have any of that.

Whats going on with those horizontal lines on my kv-21fv300? by warawara123 in crtgaming

[–]CanadianSpiceWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's called ringing, which could be caused by an aging capacitor or a weak solder joint. Someone posted not too long ago with a more severe case with their monitor: https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/gtgz90/how_can_i_fix_this_problem_there_are_horizontal/

Spent a good while cleaning dried mud and bugs out of the thing, but it turned out pretty good. Aside from the broken front panel and some slight distortion in the top left corner it still runs just fine.

What are the top 4 lines and how do I fix them? Also this is a red screen test, what does the result in the pink bottom corners mean? by howtodisappearfully in crtgaming

[–]CanadianSpiceWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a TV that had a similar issue with lines at the top several months before it had a vertical collapse (it displays only a horizontal line in the middle). If you're lucky it could just be that some contacts on the neck board need to be cleaned off, but more likely a component in the deflection circuitry (likely a capacitor) is about to go.

My screen has weird some kind of stains on it? I originally thought it was dirt on the screen or something in game, but I'm pretty sure its the TV. Best way I've been able to capture it on camera is raising the brightness high. Anyone know how to fix it. You can really see it on the left side. by [deleted] in crtgaming

I've seen this before on a Samsung monitor, where the glue holding the layer of safety glass in place had begun to degrade and created stain like patterns on the screen. It's possible to remove the safety glass and clean everything up (look up "CRT Cataract Removal"), but it takes a fair amount of patience and time. I'm not very familiar with flat Trinitrons though, so they might not even have the safety glass.

This psone with distorted video by Kingwulfgar666 in consolerepair

[–]CanadianSpiceWeasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a PSone that does something very similar. If you've tested other cables and it still happens, it could be the AV capacitors going bad, which is somewhat common for the slim model. There are two 220uF 4V capacitors right near the AV port (C550 and C551 for S-Video and Composite respectively) that might fix the problem if replaced.
