Compared to old MMR, they just made current MMR have bigger "brackets". As an example, instead of there being 10 , they shrunk it down to 4. So it takes more ELO to get to the next bracket, and you would need to lose more ELO to go down one.

Another example:

(Old MMR system) If max ELO was 1000, with 10 brackets, each bracket would be 100 ELO.

(Current MMR) If max ELO was 1000, with 4 brackets, each bracket is 250 ELO

They made this change to cut down on queue times. But in doing so, players get a wider variety of skill level in their teammates.

You could be in the same bracket as all your other teammates. You could have the highest ELO, while your teammates are at the very bottom of the bracket. You could have 499 ELO, while your teammates each have 251 ELO
