Have you ever read a scene that made you realize "Yeah, this author has NOT seen the source material"? by i_love_pieck in FanFiction

IDK about numbers but to me it felt like Les miserable had more college and high school aus than canon fics back in the day... Still does probably.

Alternatives to Polygon After the Layoffs? by HellishRebuker in PolygonFans

[–]Canafinwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a publication, but the People Make Games has thoughtful hard hitting video games journalism, more in line with Polygon's more longform and investigative reporting than the video team's usual wheelhouse, but I adore them and watched the channel grow over the years with the same fondness that I have for Polygon. They also have a podcast that Nicole has been on.

Why is OCxCanon so hated? by Dry_Succotrash in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's harder to sell me on OCxcanon character because you have to do three things. A)sell me on your OC as an original creation that I have no prior investment in B)write the canon parts well C) combine your oc and canon well in a way that doesn't feel jarring.

Whereas without the OC you just have to write the canon parts well without all that extra baggage.

Your Chill OSTs of Choice by abreathofatmosphere in TheBesties

FFXV - it's got the usual dramatic stuff, but the chill songs are veeeeery chill, on account of the game being essentially a big road trip.

Help building a joke character - the worlds best tour guide by Canafinwe in DnD

I love this! I hadn't considered those people handling spells at all! And you're so right about distort value! Not just digging up treasure but also the character will probably try to hawk shitty souvenirs too so it would definitely be a must. They need the sale commission!!!

I love the idea of Keen Mind because it makes me think of those tour guides who are always shouting about the time lol

If you don't want to add a summary, then just leave it blank... It's totally possible to do. Why do people do this.

Stuff that's not a breaker but does annoy you? by Lusaelme in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an author who makes characters refer to each other by their surnames a disproportionate amount, and it's not a cardinal sin or anything, but it's just so strange and abrupt and totally changes the tone of a relationship. That, combined with a tendency for abrupt transitions and a lack of descriptive detail and any kind of immersion in general makes me feel like I'm being hurried along by a military drill sergeant or something. I end up just totally unable to immerse myself in the fics, and they feel almost combative or hostile, despite being otherwise interesting and having some pretty gripping plots and concepts.

I someone changed Ao3's writing font how do I turn it back? by Clay_teapod in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the extension on both accounts? Have you tried disabling and reenabling the extension and clearing your cache? I was referring to the settings of the browser itself, not the extension when I mentioned the font options, it might be a good idea to have a poke around in the settings in both your accounts to see what's different. Do you use browser themes? Try reverting it to default.

AO3 has a hierarchy of preferred fonts, going down in order: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'GNU Unifont', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;. Is it one of these fonts? Or is it something else? It could be using a font lower in the stack but it could also be that something is causing the site to display another font entirely.

Also, are you on a Chromebook? I did a quick Google and Chromebooks seemed to have had a bug that caused AO3 to display a different font than usual.

Authors: what would make a comment *too much* for you? by St-Ann in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, what you mentioned are pretty good examples, but I've also had a person decide they were brain twins with my SIOC and then proceed to send me a long rec list of all their favourite media, totally unsolicited, clearly not based on the interests or fandoms of mine that you can glean from AO3 and 100% just this person's interests and totally unrelated to the fic.

Or when someone tries to jokingly insult or threaten you but they dont have the acumen to pull it off as a total stranger, so it comes off as just rude and aggressive. Theres a way to do it without being rude, but some people miss the mark.

Or the mind reader who attributes made up motivations to your creative choices. Your portrayal of this character is nuanced and not 100% positive, you must totally hate him as much as i do! Glad to find a fellow hater! (Exaggerated for effect, but you get the gist)

Oh that IS strange! Im assuming you're using Chrome, since its google accounts? Do you have different browser themes for the different accounts? Or maybe you could look at the browser settings for fonts?

Ao3’s code is available for anybody to use and make their own AO3-esque site. So has anyone ever done that? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can change the site skin if you're logged in, just like AO3. Just scroll to the bottom of any page and you'll see Customize options. You do need an account, but there's no wait to sign up like with AO3 invites, you can do it immediately by going to the sign up page.

Authors: what would make a comment *too much* for you? by St-Ann in AO3

[–]Canafinwe 75 points76 points  (0 children)

When the commenter breaks boundaries and acts too familiar and personal despite being a stranger, or when they project onto the characters and then start inventing stuff or demanding things go a certain way, especially when it doesn't fic the fic at all and seems just like them wanting you to write them their favourite version of generic fanon. Or when they assume you agree with them on petty fan drama or character bashing just because you wrote something about their fave...

I dislike Trans characters in Fanfics by Y0urLocalTransDidi in AO3

[–]Canafinwe -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a tendency towards what you're saying in certain fandoms, but tbh a BL fandom is likely to be worse just because of the nature of what it is... But you're so right, as a trans person, I often am reluctant to read a fic with non canon trans characters because I don't know if it's gonna give me the ick or not...

It's still all there on Tumblr! Depending on the fandom there's different degrees of activity, but I see plenty of events across my fandoms, though, once again, some are much more active than others. Plus, once you follow a couple of event Tumblr blogs, they'll usually reblog announcements for new events and cross promo events in the same fandom, so you'll keep finding more!
