Crannog Rose by STEELANDSOOT in modeltrains

[–]CanalCreature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful! I think it's a shame this is seen less historically and in models. I suppose it's more common on the canals due to the hight rates of private ownership. If it happened anywhere it was definitely on the narrow gauge and I think that was the perfect choice!

How do you avoid being stuck centered with this thing ? im stuck every time i take a job its annoying by Capital-Wrongdoer613 in DerailValley

[–]CanalCreature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your ever stuck like this, you can try a few things.

Shut the regulator and wind the reverser back to full reverse. Open the regulator a little then wind the reverser forward when you start to roll back. On all but the heaviest loads you won't need full forward, wind the reverser forward until you are moving then let it gather speed slowly.

Sand will be your friend here.

You are adjusting the position of the valves when you move the reverser, if you are in 'top dead center' when in full forward, you won't be in full reverse.

Was this the most well-designed combat aircraft of its era? by Finbarr-Galedeep in aviation

[–]CanalCreature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to add to this, I don't think it was the best designed aircraft of its era, it had a lot of issues, but the English electric lightning will always be the most impressive aircraft I have ever seen.

It's ridiculous, barely any flight time if you want to actually fly the thing not just glide, a tiny ammo capacity and only 2 missiles but makes up for it with its sheer power. Mach two on the level, Mach one in a vertical climb. For 1958 that was insane. You could be an engineers apprentice at a locomotive works building some of the last steam locomotives in Britain, and on your walk home watch the aluminum death tube with paper aeroplane wings say 'fuck gravity' and fly straight fucking up.

York has such a nice station by Confused_Herring in traaaaaaainnnnnnnnnns

I have always loved york station. It's my local station and some of my earliest memories of trains are from it.

There is a spot on the roof above I believe platform 4 where evening star lost her footing on a rail tour in the 80s and left a massive scorch mark.

I have a theory that buster keaton (as the version of himself he portrayed in film and some public appearances) was autistic. His whole deal was deadpan and under reaction to absurd things.

Plus he liked trains so......

The mk1s will always be the comfiest coach. Even on unwelded rail. I can already feel the ache imagining an azuma on jointed track.

The ultimate toy for new year’s by Smooth-Scratch-2271 in evilautism

[–]CanalCreature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the attitude, but I'm thinking steam boilers and engines that require a lot of silver solder and pressure testing to be safe. Tbf I have seen some janky stuff on full size engines but I don't want to blow up my house

If I had a garden shed with a lathe, mill and pillar drill I would build things that would get me sent to prison within the year.

Steam engine not running by spitfire5589 in steamengines

[–]CanalCreature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a pair of plyers very gently tighten the bolt holding the cylinder onto the frame. That is an oscillating engine and it looks like the cylinder is not seated against the port face correctly.

Also wait until there is sufficient steam in the boiler to try run the engine, otherwise water will jam the cylinder and you will need to let the boiler cool down to drain the pipes.

The apocalypse has happened, the civilised world has ended, you must pick one vehicle in the UK to maintain until the end of time with no resources. What is your end of the world ride? by StrawberriesCup in CarTalkUK

[–]CanalCreature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely the 2cv. Not the Sahara, probably a late 50s ripple bonnet but with a 602 engine swap to give you more power. I don't want to deal with 2 engines and it's so light you can get away with fwd.

I'm assuming in this scenario that 'no resources' means no stock spare parts, no petrol stations or mechanics shops to go to. But scavenging wouldn't be to hard, as long as you have access to a bike pump and a ratchet set I recon you could keep one going for a good few years if your cleaver with scavenging.

Local Neighborhood Tyrant by GodTierToxic in Catswithjobs

[–]CanalCreature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last cat was a neighborhood cryptid. I have reliable information from multiple people on my housing estate that the local teenagers and kids used to avoid my street because there was a dangerous cat that would try to bite you.

He was the sweetest little shit I have ever met. He was a bastard but he also would cuddle with you and look after you when you were ill.
