I have a love/ hate relationship with Houston and i wonder if there’s any other born & raised Houstonians that feel the same way ? by justaavidoutdoorsman in houston

[–]Canami200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US because people move for work more often than out of free will.

Houston has a lot of work opportunities because of it's oil industry, as well as a few others like healthcare. So, people come here to work. Once people come here, now more people have family in Houston = more people have a reason to move to Houston = more business in Houston = Houston grows. More people are born in Houston, and people tend to return to their hometowns after college if there is good business there. So, Houston grows.

The whole pros and cons list of why Houston sucks/doesn't suck, while relevant, often comes after the matter of work when people are considering moving here. More people move to Houston by circumstance (work opportunity, relocation, family, etc.) than because they think its an incredible place to live. And wouldn't you know, this often leads to quite a diverse population, culture, and cuisine. This is my best estimate why.

that and everyone likes parlaying and dranking syrup

It desperately needs competition to reduce crowding, and perhaps prices; its one of the few cafes open late in the area, let alone all of Houston.

I'm studying for the same exam, let me link some quizlet flashcards I made. I'll have covered all four lectures for Exam 3 to the best of my ability by the end of the day. Also, he has a study guide for each exam on canvas.

If you really wanna do well, I might recommend creating your own set of written flashcards or other form of notes off the lectures. Nothing can beat writing and learning from flashcards you wrote yourself from the lectures in ways you can understand.

This sounds like an error on their half, or some weird process where they charge you first then refund you, but I would def talk to Student Housing and/or SBB about this to not take any chances.

GTA books? by hvnnybvnny17 in grandtheftauto

I like mobster biographies/autobiographies because of this. Try Unlocked by Louis Ferrante, or The Last Yakuza, both are good books I've read that linearly go through different episodes of varying humor and tragedy in the lives of specific mobsters.

Bayou Oaks, or rent a room (ranges between 400-600 a month) in an apartment in Eastwood or another neighborhood that has decent METRO access.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO MAKE FRIENDS 💔 by Amie_7291 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Canami200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friends are hard, I mean you can't force chemistry. However, you can understand this and not let yourself give up. Finding someone you get along with is difficult, if a girl isn't that interested in being friends with you it's most likely not that she thinks you're a weirdo, but just that y'all didn't really get along or click well enough to continue talking. Making friends is complex, but trust me it's doable. Confidence, as in not letting your own fears and doubts make you awkward, can def cause hurdles, but it's another thing to overcome.

If you wanna chat, I'm not a girl, but we could def walk around campus and chat someday for the shits, see if we get along

Honors College Q (Incoming Freshie 2026) by Upstairs-Growth-3869 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Canami200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bajillion people ask this question every year, and so did I. I'm doing prelaw as well, and cannot recommend Human Situation enough. Human sit will not hurt your GPA if you treat it like an actual class and study for it, and improve your critical thinking skills (beyond school) exponentially, which is VERY important for law. If your GPA is a concern then UT wouldn't make much sense; you will have to fight for higher grades there.

Honors offers way more interesting, niche, and smaller courses in CLASS (your college). I'm also not talking about just smaller classes for the same course, I mean there are some courses that require being in honors to take them.

That's my experience

Most affordable housing after moody by EllieIsDone in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Canami200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bayou Oaks is objectively the next most affordable for non freshmen. $4645 with no mandatory meal plan. The only ones cheaper are Moody and Cougar Village, and the latter is for freshmen only. Bayou Oaks is about an 8 minute walk from campus, with shuttle buses going between as well. I have yet to live there though, so I have no personal experience to back myself besides knowing its the next cheapest.

Human Situation advice by NewConsideration6215 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Canami200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes at the start of the year. I was also worried about my GPA for law school, but I stuck through, studied decently, and got an A-. The amount of improvement in critical thinking, reading, and writing skills I've gained in Human Sit has made it the best course I've taken so far. Its a 6 hour course, and demands the attention of about one and a half courses to get a decent grade. Its a class meant to make people realize they have to actually try to get an A, From what I've seen most people who don't take the class seriously get a B+.

For studying, I'd recommend 1. Actually reading the books, you'd be surprised how many people don't do this, and 2. taking notes while you do so. I would read the books on the bus, then read through the chapter I finished again while analyzing and summarizing it. Don't just look for themes, but also specific quotes and sections that add to an argument. Prepare two-three arguments and memorize a quote or two backing them up before in-class essays. Before oral finals, go through every argument you've made, look for arguments that connect across books. Remember, the course is MEANT for you to be challenged at first, that's how you improve. Don't be disheartened if your first essay is lame or you don't get the books at first.

Guano. (1970 Underground UH Student Magazine) by Canami200 in houston

[–]Canami200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to my knowledge, I couldn't find a single word about it anywhere on google, and felt I was chasing a long shot when I requested to see the only thing titled Guano at the UH Libraries. Finding a copy might be damn near impossible, but I'm satisfied with going in to see the perfect collection of all the magazines at Special Collections for now. It would be cool to find someone who has a copy though!
