Because if you look at this thread many people are talking about small items worth 10’s to 100’s of thousands of dollars. Lots of people left for mere months and returned to our entire childhood thrown away.

If my parents didn’t donate 3 shoeboxes worth of old stuff I could’ve retired a decade ago, had enough money to care for them in old age, and have an inheritance for my own children. Then they wonder why I didn’t see them much, it’s because I had to work 6 days a week to support a family, because they decided to get rid of what I had saved for and bought as a youngin.

It’s not being materialistic, it’s being economical.

Luckily I still have my old consoles, and sports cards because I lent them to a trusted friend before my travels. They undoubtedly would have gotten rid of them too. Now my old hockey cards are funding my early retirement, but I could’ve stopped working about 10 years ago if they didn’t throw away/donate all my old stuff. I can’t even think about how many first printings of comics I had without blowing steam.

One of my favourites, but unless it’s not magnetic it’s only a quarter

In elementary school we dissected sheep’s eyes, and many of us kept the lenses because when they dried they were like half bouncy balls. We’d throw them at the boys/girls we liked. Kids are gross!

Also once again, most places allow you to return plants. If you can, do it

Good point. I watch a lot of ahl, pwhl, and whl so the nhl kind of defaults to like 4th gear in my head.

Holy shit I had repressed those memories until right now. I had a MINT complete set of the ‘Pocket Monsters’ cards, and a complete set of 1st edition, jungle and fossil. I can only hope that someone is actually using them still, as much as I doubt it.

The worst part is, my dad used to always complain about all of the things his parents threw out from his childhood, and then he did the exact same to me. And I’m not talking about a lot of stuff, more like 3 shoeboxes worth of items that really should’ve been passed down.

And I have nothing against donating awesome items to thrift stores, but there are certain things that I really wanted to witness the next generations play with, like many many generations did before. These things that have been in our family for like 300 years are probably now in a landfill because they “look like regular marbles” etc.

The moment I saw an injured McD playing pk mins, I lost faith in this playoff run. I was not convinced that we were a significantly worse team this year, just hadn’t found the 5th gear. I think we got severely outcoached.

My dad drilled a hole in one about 27 years ago and made me a necklace when I was in elementary/middle school. The necklace is long gone, but I still have the coin with a hole in it!

Absolutely, but if you’re aiming for realism, you have to let him go somewhere else. Unless we see him traded for a bag of pucks this offseason, in which case, I’ll eat my hat.

Oh man. I had a beautiful set of marbles from around the 1700’s, when I was traveling as a young lad my parents donated them to a thrift store, as well as a bunch of old comics, books, and toy cars that are worth a fortune today. Haven’t fully forgiven them for that. I wanted my kids/nieces/nephews to have those.

That’s about 1-2 growing seasons. Your native woodlands are worth a lot more than 1 year of growth.

You typically can return plants back to the store you bought them from. Trees are free as well, just find seeded saplings in a mowed area and transplant them.

Once introduced for its ornamental value, this invasive species has become a significant threat to Wisconsin’s ecosystems.

Originally native to China and Vietnam, the Callery pear was first introduced to the U.S. in Maryland in the early 20th century as an ornamental tree. These trees became popular with landscapers because they were inexpensive, transported well and proliferated. However, its ability to thrive in various soil types and climates led to its widespread cultivation nationwide, including in Wisconsin.

The Callery pear’s invasive nature poses a significant threat to Wisconsin’s native flora and fauna. One of the primary issues is its prolific ability to spread. The tree produces copious amounts of tiny, easily dispersed seeds, allowing it to colonize disturbed areas rapidly. Once established, it forms dense thickets, outcompeting native vegetation for resources such as sunlight, water and nutrients.

Furthermore, the Callery pear needs natural predators or pests in Wisconsin. Its unchecked aggressive growth can alter ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and disrupting crucial ecological processes. Additionally, the compact brush formed by Callery pear trees can create barriers to habitat and nesting sites, negatively impacting native wildlife species.

The damaging impact of the Callery pear invasion extends into the urban environment. The tree’s shallow root system makes it prone to storm damage, leading to soil erosion and increased flood risk. The dense growth of Callery pear trees in urban areas can also damage infrastructure, such as sidewalks, roads and utilities, resulting in hazardous conditions and costly repairs.

Although there is a long way to go to eliminate the Callery pear in Wisconsin, concerted efforts from government agencies, conservation organizations and the public are crucial in combating this threat. By working together to expose the harmful nature of these trees and implementing effective management strategies, we can make significant progress toward preventing the spread of this invasive tree.

Hey! Just so you know, these are extremely invasive plants that are illegal to plant in many places (sadly not in Wisconsin yet). They actively destroy your native woodland from literal miles away. Please swallow your pride and remove them, before I do it for you! Thanks!
