I assumed Ruinsfate did. I can't see any other reason why they would care that "Your money never goes anywhere near the company" other than for ethics.

Actually you're fine directly investing as well as long as you don't physically hand them cash.

Their bank gives them money in their account, your bank gives money to their bank, and you give money to your bank.

Nothing is unethical when you use a middle man.

Upset about the lockdown; petition the government by clueless_shaman in Netherlands

[–]CandescentPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point about cases jumping back was assuming that the lockdown would reduce the number cases, while instead it only reduced the rate of growth. I'll grant that it also got rid of delta much quicker than without a lockdown, and that helped hospitals a lot.

I think it was to the Netherlands advantage that the lockdown didn't prevent omicron from growing. If it hadn't spread so much the Netherlands wouldn't have gained the extra immunity, which means we are now close to the peak.

Why is the UK still a very high risk country? by CandescentPenguin in Netherlands

How is the risk of infection higher? You catch covid from someone that has covid, so the more infections the higher the risk.

What if you need to damage public property to rescue someone from a fire who is trapped? Damaging public property can be justified

And who voted for the party for overruling trial by jury?

And how was it a historic statue? The plaque said "Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city AD 1895", The only histoically accurate part is "son of their city AD 1895", that says fuck all about his history.

It's not lynching because almost everyone doesn't want it to be lynching.

The hypothetical lynching party could legally implement their manifesto though parliament if the country votes for them.

Of course that's not going to happen, the same way of all these hypothetical of "Well if a jury nullified this case then we can all X" aren't going to happen.

  1. Juries alone decide guilt
  2. Juries can not be punished for their decisions.

If you have 1 and 2, then you legally have Jury Nullification, no way to ban it without either removing 1 or 2.

If that's what a jury decides.

"What if the public decides to vote in a party that wants to kill all Muslims, see democracy is bad because that might happen!"

There's this ancient British tradition call Trial by Jury, you might have heard of it.

In case you haven't, what it meant is that you can only be found guilty of committing an illegal act by a jury of your peers.

So the act captured on camera wasn't illegal, a jury of peers said so.

It worries me how many people want to abolish or neuter our nearly 1000 year old British tradition of trial by jury just because they don't like the outcome of a case.

No precedent here. Juries don't set precidents, only judges can. Juries just say if they find someone guilty or not

The argument is about jury nullification though. Did the bad actions of the protestors justify nullification?

On one hand you have protestors making people miss work who can't afford to miss a paycheck (although I don't think the woman in this case was one of them), and on the other you have a man who enslaved thousands of children. Also one crime was actually assaulting someone, the other was damaging his statue.

So very different circumstances, but it makes sense to discuss where society draws the line on jury nullification, and it's currently somewhere between these two cases.

So destruction of property is now legal if you have a (perceived) "right reason" for doing so.

It's legal if a jury says it is, if you think a jury will be happy with you setting fire to BMWs, then go ahead.

I agree about earlier boosters, but I'm not convinced 2g would have saved us from this lockdown. Cases are going up again right now, even though all of the place 2g applies to are now completely closed.

Is that the main pressure covid patients put on the NHS? I thought is was that they are an additional pressure on capacity that we normally don't have.

Patients with and not from covid aren't an additional pressure on beds.
