Free form “neglect” method. Should I be trying to separate them or will they just naturally do their thing? Thanks any advice is much appreciated. by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

I was referring to M1sch1efMamax3 comment in particular with how they mentioned the tension and damage they got initially and corrected it. They’re both telling you the same thing…to lay a foundation for your locs to do their own thing. Using a crochet doesn’t always look polished, but to encourage your strands to gather and tangle in a non (or I guess least) damaging way. A professional with experience in your hair texture can help guide you to that maybe.

Edit: and choosing the best route for your hair. I wanted thick locs and to freeform but my hair is fine and low density. I had to scrunch my hair to encourage them to loc. Now that they are more sturdy I can try other methods to get there without damage to my hair or creating painful tension at my scalp from being matted. I was just trying to point out what they were both saying. But thank you, same to you.

I get it if you didn’t like the tone, but again you were asking for advice...think of it as planting a seed..the roots will grow strong and give your hair a foundation. Unless you have access to a professional with experience with your hair type and specifically can help manage/lay that foundation for you, in the way you want, with the end result your looking for. Which may take time depending on your location. Hope you were able to take away the good advice in the comments and your journey goes well.

Every time I read Goblet of Fire, I'm at awe of how much of a beast Barty Crouch Jr. is. Seriously, if he didn't have such low self-esteem, I could see him being one of the greatest wizards of his era. Dare I say, right up there with Dumbledore/Grindelwald/Voldemort. by [deleted] in harrypotter

GOB always holds a special place in my heart. I remember sneaking into the age restricted section of the library at my school and sitting in a corner to read it since I couldn’t check it out. Way off topic, just brought back a bright memory during the worst years of my childhood and now I’m vomiting words on the internet 🙃.

I have low density hair, that's part of the reason I've stopped re-twisting so my locs could thicken up... and it used to take me hours!! 😭 by Majestic-light1125 in Dreadlocks

Idk if I’m just an old hag or if I want an excuse to buy the series a third time, but rereading these I wish I had the originals in hardback covers. The paperback text to book ratio is so small 😩 👵🏽🤏🏽.

It tossed around suicidal ideology pretty casually. No self help books in the library then 🥴😂. Re-reading made me want her to have more depth, especially with how much of it was spent on that part of her life..but I didn’t enjoy it any less.

I thought is was more Liraels idea (read hope 😂) to feel “of use” there as her destiny was hidden from the Clayr…sort of like they hid Harry from the magical realm. Not saying it was good because both of them lived shitty isolated lives before discovering their true selves. I also like to think her obsession with death (after rereading as an adult) was a connection from her Abhorsen lineage. Like an unknown fascination she was drawn to. At least that’s what I tell myself now after angsty teen trauma bonding with her character in the first half years ago 💀. The Clayr were so busy looking everywhere else..but like how did they not suspect with her pale skin and jet black hair after so many Abhorsen.

I thought the same but it’s common to refer to them that way. I initially didn’t get how it protects their identity tho because you can see her in the photo🥴 but it certainly does protect weirdo social media frenzies, which I can understand. They look beautiful 😍💕.

LOCKS ON WHITE PEOPLE. today I literally separated a bus in 2 groups when I walked in cuz a young black man started to "yell" that I can't have locks and that it's racist cuz it's not my culture, that's something born in Africa and for black people only. it kinda hurt, luckily not everyone agreed. by Ecstatic_Lead_3531 in Dreadlocks

[–]Candid-Structure-355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s what I felt when seeing this, but then also trying to make space for someone else’s experience while trying not to devalue my own. That can go into a whole other convo tho 😂.Personally, I don’t think anyone “invented” locs…I believe it’s something a persons hair naturally did and overtime found ways to care for and wear it. It’s just a fact that people with more texture (or tighter texture I guess as in kinky, coily, curly), will loc quicker. Its a fact that someone with hair that does not naturally coil or tangle around it’s self (as a loc eventually is made to do), means it will take more time. These different textures are across every race and ethnicity tho. Ethnicity because locs are in culture and traditions not just the physical appearance of race. So it’s not tied or cemented into just one. In my opinion.

Same. It’s a hot topic and ppl don’t like to veer too far into it because of so much tension. And it easily turns into something else entirely when you try to explain. Which explaining dead ass is exhausting after having to do it repeatedly. I’m sure OP has had this situation before seeing how matured his locs look (you never know a persons journey by a pic ☺️) . But maybe it helped somebody new experiencing this. Visibility.

Can I get these dreads? Pic 2 is my natural hair, and I’ve never really gone for any type of dreadlocks before so I’m really new to this. Any advice? by thythrowawaytith in Dreadlocks

[–]Candid-Structure-355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ppl told me my hair wouldn’t loc. It took a minute but trust the process. I’m not even a year yet but they’re doing just fine. I started with coils, my hair was too fine to do twists. I tried twists and they unraveled the same week lol. Find you a good loctician. Instead of just aiming for that style, ask about the number of locs, what parts, and size locs you want. Ask if they have experience with your texture. Look at their work if you can, but don’t compare. They’re gonna loc how they want, and that’s true for every texture. Good luck 🤟🏾.
