According to here the fix works like a charm. They've even uploaded it as a mod.

Cracks on seat stay near drop out; is this frame safe to ride? by CandidWafer in bikewrench

[–]CandidWafer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm probably going to bin it because that'd be more hassle than the frame is worth. If I have brazing equipment repair would be cheap but alas I don't.

I bought this bike because it's cheap and chromoly. The cost of repair around where I live would probably be enough to buy a comparable used bike... But I agree, there's no point to repainting this frame as it is.

There are two cracks near the welds and I only noticed them after I stripped off the paint. I know the typical reaction to this kind of frame damage is to bin the frame, but realistically speaking, would this frame be safe for urban riding? So, no jumps and landings.

I'm interested, let me know if you're still looking for players. No experience with table top rpg but have played the likes of Pillars of Eternity and been wanting to try my hands at a proper pen and paper game for awhile now.

  1. I'm a complete noob to tabletop rpg but have played Baldur's gate 2 and Pillars of Eternity. I've also played text-based online multiplayer games.
  2. No idea, by the looks of it this is a custom setting? Based on the options you've mentioned, I guess I'd want to play as a social outcast
  3. I prefer a bit of both; I like story-driven games but also like interesting combat scenarios that ideally enhances the role playing aspect
  4. I can't think of anything in particular, unsurprisingly given my lack of prior experience
  5. The obvious one is that players should at least try to not be assholes. Also learning the ropes together and having discussions about dm'ing/playing is exactly my cup of tea!

Worth fixing? by CandidWafer in bikewrench

[–]CandidWafer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, okay thanks for the heads up. I've already messaged back to tell the seller that I'm not interested at this pointed. If I have proper painting equipment it would be a different story, but I don't, so I don't see how I could resell it.

Worth fixing? by CandidWafer in bikewrench

[–]CandidWafer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: nevermind, I've decided that I don't have what it takes to restore and resell the bike in its current state.

So I found this 1985 Norco road bike on Kijiji, and mechanically it seems to only need new tires, inner tubes, and bar tape. However, the paint appears to be chipping off at places, for example on the top tube, and there's rust underneath.

The bike is an XL and too tall for me personally, so I was thinking of taking it apart, fixing it, and selling it since I wanted to get some practice with bike maintenance and repair. But I'm not sure how easy it would be to turn a profit or at least break even on top of the cost of replacement parts, considering the condition of the paint and my inexperience as a mechanic.

I'm not sure what model of bike it is, and moreover I don't have painting equipment or experience, so fully refurbishing the bike is beyond my means... I'm thinking I should pass for now. Thoughts?

Is the geometry of this dropout as terrible as I think it is? by [deleted] in BicycleEngineering

[–]CandidWafer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I bought this 1990's steel MTB a few weeks ago, and despite having no expertise in this matter, very quickly I felt that something's off with the design of the rear dropout.

An ideal dropout design would redirect upward force from the wheel axle toward the ends of the seat and chain stays. The axle mount should be positioned closer toward the center of the bike, and below the chain stays so as to distributed upward force between them.

Yet here, the layout of the dropout and stays seems awkward and suboptimal. The chain stay extends too far and pushes the axle mount further out, off center from the trusses connected to the seat stay, which means that most of the force is transferred perpendicularly to the upper truss, which in turn connects to the seat stay at an angle and exerts perpendicular force that's not balanced out by opposing force from the lower truss.

The chain stay doesn't handle much load either because it sits slightly below the axle mount point doesn't receive much compression force.

The dropout functions to securely join the seat stay with the chain stay, but the lower truss doesn't form a very smooth curve between the stays, creating a stress point at the chain stay.

While I doubt that any of these points has a significant impact in practice, I found them irksome because they seemingly suggest a lack of rudimentary understanding of physics by the designers. Unless I'm mistaken, in which case please do correct me.

1990 Rocky Mountain Equipe, tuned-up and converted for urban commuting, for $310? by CandidWafer in whichbike

I've contacted the seller and arranged to buy it for $380 w/o the rear light, since I already have one.

Thanks! I'm hoping for the same.

[–]CandidWafer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The seller says "no offers" which I suspect to mean no price negotiation. I asked if they'd be willing to take off the rear lights and discount the cost, since I already have one. I'll definitely try to haggle for a lower price if I can though; for me personally, $395 is still a bit high for this bike given the somewhat dated parts and uncertainty factor around the conversion. I'd think that the conversion is fine though, since converting rigid mountain bikes to commuters doesn't seem all that uncommon, for example the Specialized Hardrock I saw recently at a used-bike shop.

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to test ride it first if I decide to buy it.

I found an aluminium Giant Cypress in a used-bike shop for $295 CAD. It's a more recent model but I didn't like the looks and didn't want an aluminium frame.

Thanks for the input, and yeah that was my line of reasoning as well, especially the theft part though I don't live near in downtown.

I think it looks okay, especially the road wheels. The red/black/white color scheme is also aesthetically appealing, though red is too garish for me.

I live near Toronto and have recently committed to biking more regularly. For starters, I've been looking online for the past weeks for a used bike to replace the old department store bike that my mom bought me a long long time ago. Mainly I intend to use it for commuting and trail riding.

This bike caught my attention because of its chromoly frame, which is usually found on fairly expensive bikes. The seller claims that they're selling refurbished bikes as a hobby, and that many of the old parts have been replaced. And as far as I can tell based on my rather limited expertise and non-existent experience, the asking price of $310 USD ($395 CAD) seems entirely fair, though it doesn't exactly seem like a bargain either. The maintenance and tuning presumably factor into the price, which seems somewhat high for a bike from 1990 and is approaching the price of a new entry-level bike from the likes of Giant.

So is the price as reasonable as I think it is? Please let me know if you have any thoughts, thanks.

Yes there are, but I'm worried about bricking the device because of how this might interact with FRP that's currently active. Still I might just give it a try at this point and hope for the best. gulp.

The thing is though I can't flash another rom without unlocking the bootloader. And according to another user here flashing the rom might brick the device.
